2018 My Most Important Tool for Weight Loss

One of my most important tools in helping me in my weight loss journey.
Is to prep my food. The more I can have ready to go, and easy makes
things less stressful. My stepfather used to tell me, "Sometimes you need to do what you don't want to do, in order to get what you want" So true. Prep work today was about
2 hours give or take, my sink is filled with dishes and it was a pain in the butt, that's the honest answer. It's New Years day and honestly the very last thing I wanted to do today.
That being said, I'm glad I did it. I'm especially glad now that' it's done, and I know that one step, that 2 hour time block has prepared me for a successful week. I'm always so proud of myself when I push through and take the steps that I know are necessary. It may not be a perfect week, but it will certainly be better being ready for it.

What's your most helpful tool?

Here's what I've got set up for this week.

Pre Measured Chicken Breast - in 4 oz package's ( I used Rotisserie Chicken from Shop Rite)
Green Peppers
Walnuts and Macademia pre-measured into portion sizes . I can over eat these thing to easy.
Bag Salad
New $1.99 containers
Zip Locks

    Pre-prep is my BIGGEST secret, too! I've been on SP for 2147 days.... prep is how I am keeping it all together!!!!

    ...I love the cut up chicken from Costco the is originally from their rotisserie..easy and good. I also have a wonderful husband that helps me chop and dice and he DOES dishes,

    I enjoy the chicken from Shop Rite and Price Chopper a lot. Nothing wrong with taking a short cut.

    Totally agree! And my job requires that I travel a lot. I'm often gone Monday through Friday, alone in a hotel room, with restaurants galore and NO ONE to see me eat! So it has been quite the challenge to live past those constant voices in my head telling me to eat. Preparing my food ahead of time, as well as to plan some special types of fitness (zumba classes, yoga classes, walking in a local park, etc.) while I'm gone. It's always a challenge, but I'm doing quite well! Keep up the great work! v emoticon

    You look really organised – I'm impressed! I always prep my own food from scratch: yes, it is time-consuming and a bit of a bore, but it cuts the calories and I know what is going into it.

    I'm a from believer that you have to have a positive attitude before you start a program for a healthier lifestyle. If you don't start with your brain in a positive attitude you most likely are setting yourself up to fail! You CAN do this!!

    Food prep is super helpful in sticking with your plan! Sometimes we forget that we're going to spend time cooking/searching/trying to decide what to do for meals regardless and having a plan and doing the prep can actually SAVE you time during the week.

    My favorite weight loss tool actually has little to do with food but it also what will keep me from ever having to diet again:


    Super helpful if you keep going on the diet yo-yo and want to stop, once and for all.

    I do a lot of Pre-Prep too and it is so well worth it. Something healthy is always at the ready and I am not tempted to grab something quickly that isn't healthy but convenient.

    I used to buy everything for salads and spend hours washing everything and drying it. I would put it all together for a meal, and hated every bite. Never seemed to fill me up, and I didn't get any satisfaction from it. This past year I have bought ready packaged Sweet Kale Salad which I like, but found out last week, it really doesn't like me. I do not have a problem making big portions of anything or feeding people, and always used to make my own cole slaw. I have always loved potatoes, made any way, especially mashed with raw onion when I have company.
    Normally I am here by myself. I used to cook hot and eat hot today, and warm ups for two nights. Now I cook every night. I usually have salmon, baked potato, sour cream, asparagus or broccoli, and/or yam. This week it's asparagus and zucchini. I was at Costco today, so have big bags of them for one person. I also bought a hot chicken today, so had that tonight. I only like the white meat, but after I ate, I deboned the chicken, so will have a couple of meals there. I buy all my meat there, and when I get home, I bag it for individual use. In the next couple of weeks, I will be making a big batch of meat sauce with turkey instead of hamburg in my slow cooker, and then make lasagna. I parcel it (4" x 4") wrap in waxed paper and then bag it. I also do that with the Costco pies. Also got 8 large green bananas. Guess I'll be around for another week.Will probably by having some smoothies too. I do a lot of baking, and give muffins away almost every week. I still have grapes in the freezer in snack bags.
    I used to bag all sorts of food to have as carriers for the gym, or just out driving, but since I am home most of the time, I have different containers that I have already pre-measured out how many cashews, chocolate raisins, kettle cooked potato chips, etc. that I can have, so just fill as I go. Sometimes, I even have a second helping, but at least each helping is a pre-measurement. Yes, each time I put the rest of the package away.

    I roast a a lot of veggies for the week on Sundays. Usually the same but add different ones as the season changes. Just cant get enough of the fall squashes. Just a little olive oil with salt and pepper. Sometimes will use herbs. The veggies can be used for a variety of meals. Discovered the whole new world of garlic while at the farmers market. However, still don't like beets. I tried the roasting but still not like them.

    Unfortunately I don't one. I spend 3/4 of every day on the road doing something like visiting my 78 year old mother who doesn't cook much anymore. So I really just grab something to eat. If I have leftovers then all I have to do is heating it up, etc.

    My eight year old always asks for a snack late at night and I feel like I have to snack too just to get the energy to get it for him and let's face it- I'm starved by then. I started making him a, " snack basket ", earlier in the night with whole wheat crackers, fruit, etc., and of course water. I can just lay here and watch him eat!

    Thank you for this post! When I was working I did exactly this, every Sunday afternoon I prepped meals, lunch and snacks for me AND the family...for the entire week! It pays to be organized....now that I am retired I NEED to do this again, because I am making bad choices because I am tired at the end of the day. Best to you!

    Mine is, if I take a day to cook and prepare three different meals, that gives me leftovers of choice for future lunches & dinners. With two/three other people to cook for, works out a little differently, but still really helps in alleviating the work of cooking dinner every night, especially when I am not at home to start dinner or am away for the evening. Makes it easier for the folks. They are on the same diet I am, so this helps them stick to it and follow it.

    We also have summary sheets that spell out what to have for all the meals in generalities. So if someone is looking for a snack choice, they can review the snack choices on the summary sheets, which are taped to the cupboard doors.

    Great blog. Thanks for sharing your ideas. I need to get some baggies and plastic containers so I can do this. I figured I am home most days and I don't need to do it. But I see with my snacks at least I need to do it. Otherwise I over eat. 👍🏻

    Very smart. My husband does mean prep and gets my lunch salads ready in separate plastic containers so mornings aren't a rush. I like the way you did the plastic baggies - very compact yet convenient.

    Yes to everything you said...

    I am recently retired (8 months now) and I still somewhat prep my lunches as when working just because it's easier and helps eliminate the "debate" in my head of what to eat then considering a less wise choice. I pre prep salads too. I find that I can mix most ingredients if I puts greens on top...even measure out dressing and put in bottom corner of container...

    Great job. Not only does it help you reach your weight and healthy eating goals. In the long run, you actually have less dishes to do during the week, which is always nice since doing dishes after a long day of work is not generally fun. Great planning and always think about how you will feel after the tough tasks-- that helps in getting us through them.

    When I come home from grocery shopping i take meat packages of chicken, chops, fish whatever it is and divide meal portions for my husband and me. I season it, marinade it for some and put into seal a meal bags. The portion size is manageable and if I am using a crockpot it is all preseasoned ready to go.

    I cook up a recipe that has several servings, have it for dinner, freeze the remainder in serving-size plastic containers. When frozen, I pop them into plastic bags that are labeled (I also re-use the plastic bags by keeping them frozen. They are ready to reheat and go! Also lemon juice can be squeezed, put into ice cube trays, then popped into a freezer bag for later use. Great tool, thanks for sharing! emoticon
