Running in the wind!
Saturday, March 24, 2018
I have been training for the past several weeks for a 5K. Today was the day of the race. I awoke to thunder and lightning and pouring rain at 6:00 AM. Checked and saw that the race was still on. First thought was to just skip the whole thing......
But for some reason, perhaps the work I have been doing to get ready for the race, I decided to gear up and go. The start time for the race was 8:00 AM.....thunder and lightning had stopped and rain was now light....and a nuisance. But the wind - oh that wind! Gusting at about 25 miles per hour. Made that light rain feel like ice pellets when it hit your face.
I was dressed warm.....in layers. Wore a hat with a brim to keep rain off my face and a heavy headband over it. Had a hood on my jacket. But alas, the run was directly into the wind for the first half. Had to take my glasses off so I could see....hat brim didn't do the trick!
And the wind.....did I mention that horrific, nasty wind????? I felt like I was pushing against a wall....especially on the uphill parts of the run. I felt like I was running in slow motion.
But the wind was at my back on the 2nd half of the course! It was pushing me! I was out of breath! Had to take my hood, hat, and headband off to cool off! Of course I put them right back on after about a minute of getting wet!
My shoes and feet were wet.....not so much because of the light rain, but because of the large puddles - I landed in two.....one when I was struggling to wipe the rain off my glasses and the other when I was struggling to get my hats back on!
I have run in several 5K's, but never have I had to run with wind like that! I was so happy to cross the finish line! I am far from fast, but my official time made me happy! 44:08 minutes! Which is a 14:13 minute mile. Glad to have done it in less than 45 minutes. Wasn't my best time, but I mention the wind???
There were 7 of us in the Female 60+ category. I came in 4th.....right in the middle. I was the only 70 year old. The other 6 were 60 (2), 64, 65(2), and 66! So I don't think I did too badly, considering I was the oldest - and actually will be 71 next month!
And I need to thank my loving husband for offering to drive me to the race. He sat in the car the entire time. He didn't want to get out of the car and stand in the rain and wind....did I mention the wind? The wind chill was awful, so I don't blame him!
So why am I blogging about this.....I guess because I want all my Spark friends to know that exercising and trying to eat healthy can help you achieve your goals - even when those goals seem overwhelming like that nasty, cold, gusty, strong wind today! You can do it!!!
