Memorial Day 2018

Monday, May 28, 2018

Today we honor those who gave their All for the freedoms that we all take for granted in the USA. This morning I took a 45 minute walk to spend time reflecting on all the lives that were lost to keep our country great. I was thinking it sad, in a way, that we rarely think about these things unless we have a holiday to remind us. And even with a holiday, many of us treat it as a three day weekend of get-togethers, cookouts and sales and do not give thought to what it stands for.

Today, let's remember the real reason for the day off work.

Growing up we always celebrated Memorial Day twice. The weekend before, the family and neighbors gathered at the cemetery for a "clean up day" to spruce up the grounds (and, of course eat some great home made country cooking). Memorial Day we would travel around to the cemeteries where family were laid to rest and place flags at the soldiers/veteran's grave cites. I still remember those days now that I live far away from home. Now, I am blessed to be able to serve our veterans daily as I work in the VA. emoticon

Remembering those lost and honoring those still putting their lives on the line for our freedom. Canada's Day of Remembrance is Nov. 11, but our armies fought together in the Second World War.
