Hello, my Spark friends! It’s been a while since my last blog and I owe you all a lot of incredible milestones and non-scale victories!
As of Sunday I have lost 118 pounds! What??? It’s still seems crazy to me! Along with those pounds disappearing from my body my BMI has dropped 17.4 points. When I started this journey I was waist deep in the Super Morbidly Obese category. Now I am officially just Obese! Seems kind of insane to celebrate being obese, but I am celebrating. Each step down on the BMI scale has been a thrilling milestone…and it’s almost unbelievable to me that I am only one category away from Overweight, and only two categories away from HEALTHY! It’s so close I can almost taste it!
Next on the list of accomplishments is my new favorite non-scale victory. Each summer I take a group of students on an international trip. Last year we visited Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, and France. This time last year I had a really hard time keeping up with the group, was always at the back of the pack, could barely walk for the pain in my feet and swollen ankles, and didn’t get to enjoy the trip as much as I should have. This year was a completely different story! I just got back from a fantastic trip to Norway, Denmark, and Sweden! With about 90 pounds gone since last year’s trip I anticipated being more active this year! OH MY GOODNESS…I am so much more active! Not only could I keep up, I was told to slow down several times! I didn’t have to stop to breathe, rest, or prop up my ankles. I was a true leader of my group and got to experience everything the trip had to offer to the fullest. AND...flying is so much easier at this size! I didn’t have to get a seat belt extender. In fact, I had a ton of extra belt once I tightened it! So exciting! Although not having as much cushion on my backside made sitting for an 8 hour flight a little more uncomfortable!

This past weekend also contained another victory for me! A redemption hike! In December of 2016 (close to my highest known weight) I went for a hike with some friends. We had only been walking about 100 feet, not even on the actual trail yet, when I pulled something in my groin. It was incredibly painful but I kept trucking along for as long as I could so that I would not look like the weak one in the group. I made it just under a mile uphill before I had to stop, turn around, and walk back down to the car by myself while crying because I was so embarrassed. On Saturday I went back to the same hiking trail. Not only did I conquer the hike up the mountain, but I climbed/scaled the actual rock at the top to see the best views! It felt incredible to be able to go back there and prove to myself (and my friends) that I can do it!

This journey has been full of ups and downs and many surprises! Every day I am thankful that I made the decision to be a better version of myself! I am loving all of the changes and still getting to know my new body while celebrating all of the milestones along the way! I am determined to keep pushing for my goals, improving myself, and spreading a little peace and love along the way!
