I Don't Like the Gym Anymore

Tuesday, October 30, 2018

About a year ago, I joined a nice gym and attended lots of classes. But I've never been a gym person, so I pushed myself through them. And began to enjoy the gym.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to make the decision to give up the pool aerobics class due to problems with chlorine. Since then, I've had a free-for-all with my choices, catering to a private tantrum.

Seems as though, if I can't have the pool class, I don't want anything at the gym. Tried to go back last Friday, but hated it. Not sure what's going on, but still keeping active on my own, including strength training.

Wishing all a happy, healthy day.

Yeah I hear you they can be crowded. Im going tonight to see if I can score an elliptical and try out the steam room but its too much of a journey for regular attendance. Maybe you can look into youtube videos- jessica smith is awesome low impact walking type stuff.

I'm also a major germ phob and watching nasty sweaty bodies get off of seats and wipe them down with a nasty sweaty towel takes all desire to be in a place like that away in a NY minute! emoticon

Wow...this sooooo sounds like me with that superficial group of friends I held onto for waaaayyyy too long and made myself purely miserable in the process. We know what we want and we need to realize it's okay to stop liking something after a certain amount of time. You are so much like me...we like to change ur up...and doggone...let's just keep doing it! emoticon emoticon

I love my treasmill at home as I can watch my taped programmes,,,without commercials! I also have some light weights to keep the arthritis from my shoulders as per my physio therapist told me to do a few months ago when I was suffering! I am too lazy to get up and go to the gym!

I got so excited to go to the gym and on the 3rd day, I fractured two ribs.
I am better, but like you, I don't feel like going back. let's hope we get that
momentum again. Meanwhile, do what you like and keep up your walking.

Just keep on pushing, no matter what you decide to do. Keep on trying different things and you're sure to find something you will enjoy whether in a group setting or on your own! You can do it!

I love my YMCA! There are 3 classes I take regularly - Functional Fitness, Body Pump, and spin. Sometimes I add in a Kettlebell class.

I have been to other gyms where I really didn't care for the instructors. And some where the music was way too loud, or the flooring was concrete (YUK! Too hard on my old joints!), or they don't like to use the a/c in the summer & they have the heat WAY up in the winter (I sweat just fine on my own...no 'hot yoga' for me!)

But you DON'T have to go to the gym for exercise. I also climb stairs, run, walk, ride my bike outside, etc.

Keep looking for something that works for you emoticon

My gym is outside, regardless of the weather.

I agree...FREE exercise is my best friend...& since I teach it to seniors I have no excuses NOT to participate...Now up to 4 classes a week as well as my daily walking & class trials in preparation....so much fun, no judgement...& I CHOOSE all the music!

I enjoy the gym as an alternative to my usual home activities (hiking, yard work, dancing, home exercise routine with light weights). I particularly like a couple of classes, and doing the weight machine circuit. But if you no longer enjoy going, it would make sense to drop your membership at the first available opportunity.

As you know, I am not a fan of gyms. Gyms are nasty places, like dorms. They can give you "gifts" for life. Our son caught MRSA in the college gym, later gave it to me, and finally my husband. We were very careful not to spread it but it is so contagious it is hard to control. MRSA is spread by skin-to-skin contact or by touching contaminated surfaces such as gym equipment or towels. It's a chronic condition for all of us which we have learned to manage. I use home exercise equipment but unfortunately the damage has already been done for us. We don't intend to spread it to others but many people going to the gym already have it and don't know or don't care. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/ar

We just went today for the first time in months and we were the only ones there. I got to try everything out with no one watching me and find new things i haven’t tried before. I really like the rowing machine and in the side room a half exercise ball to try to balance doing a plank. Still isn’t as enjoyable as my jazzercise just as you with you water class. We have our favorites and nothing else really measures up

I am so sorry to hear that you can't use the pool anymore! That's really terrible. I read a blog recently from someone who skips the pool one day, because chlorine is always too high that day? Is it possible that you had too much exposure on one day? Maybe you can ask when they add the chlorine. Perhaps you could go the day before they add the chlorine, and see how that goes. If the problem is with water that got into your eyes, you could use goggles. I imagine a lot of people exercising together in the water really kicks up a lot of water spray. Well, also you can ask if they recently began to add more chlorine than they had been using, and if there's any way they can reduce the amount that they use. Another thing that might be possible is that a different pool in your area might not bother you as much. Some places use saltwater pools. They have these cleaning systems that you don't add chlorine to, but salt, and the salt is ionized or something and turns into chlorine. But the levels of chlorine in a saltwater pool never reaches the levels in a chlorine treated pool. So you may be able to handle that. Please ask around! You might be pleasantly surprised. Good luck!

Don't get too down on yourself. This is my thought, losing weight requires a lot of discipline. We find and activity we enjoy and it makes the discipline easier. When that activity is no longer available, it really messes up our routine.

Big disappointment, for sure. See if you can find something else. Maybe social contacts. I enjoy walking, rain or shine. Sometimes, I carry an umbrella.

Give yourself time to get over the disappointment. Use it for socialization if nothing else.

Yes, mega disappointment will do that. You have to go with what you like. I love to go to the gym, but its inconvenient and difficult to get to, impossible in the winter with icy snow filled walk ways. I have always been a loner and exercising on my own is the normal. Getting to a gym forced me to be a little more social, although I didn't make any friends there was nice camaraderie. Have attended only one class this year, no excuses. I get to use these gyms for free so doubly shame on me. But its nicest to be outdoors if you enjoy good weather as you do.

I am not a gym person either. I am happier outdoors, walking, and doing strength training on my own. Some things just need a push or a change. Do what makes YOU happy!!
