Dietican v Sparkpeople

Wednesday, January 23, 2019

I went to two dieticians. seems like overkill, but I really expected them to be useless.
I don’t want to offend anyone, but I have always felt there were some careers that were completely useless highly paid people who served higher paid people that life could move on without especially in the time of the internet. Things such as pet psychic\psychologist, psychic, (here’s where the offense comes in) dietician, nutritionist, life coach, personal shopper. So, to say that I was doubtful when visiting two dieticians is an understatement. They both have super common names so I will name them here.
First, I went to Jerry a man who has been practicing 15 years he says that we will slowly make lifestyle changes to help me reach my goals. He told me not to drink anything while eating and that calories were key and not to eat more than 1600 per day. He did give me a moderately helpful cookbook tailored to black people and soul food like cornbread and neckbones. He told me that fattening food had more calories and I could eat more healthy food because it had fewer calories (duh). He also said I should journal daily.
I then went to a female dietician her name was Olive or Eve. She suggested some interesting substitutions like Greek yogurt in place of cream cheese and sour cream. She also attempted to sell me some prepackaged meals for 100 per week.
So, this was about a week ago and I have tried the advice to not drink water while eating. Believe it or not, that actually worked. I stopped eating way sooner than usual and didn’t have dessert. The way he explained it to me. When you drink water between bites it washes your taste buds and you can eat more in a hedonistic way versus a nutritional way. I found nothing on google that supported this but it did help some.
So, dieticians seem to mainly serve the same function to a lesser extent as personal trainers. I will tell you the difference personal trainers outside of giving you motivation they teach you proper form for working out which most people do wrong and prevents injury. Dieticians are mainly motivational people who hold you accountable for what you eat like personal trainers hold you accountable for what you eat. So, basically a waste of money. SparkPeople already does that.
