I'm thinking back to the day that I started with SparkPeople. For some reason, I was feeling badly about myself; about the way I looked, the way I felt. I was watching the news (probably a morning news program) and they spoke about SparkPeople in one of their segments. I checked it out and joined SparkPeople at the end of the summer in 2008. I loved the site, yet I felt (in the beginning) that the site was a little hard to navigate and it was so full of information that it was a little overwhelming. I did, however, love the fact that you could track your nutrition and your exercise and that you COULD CONNECT with people on the site that had similar (outside) interests as your own. The site was full of GREAT information, but - to me ... having a little bit of a social aspect (getting to chat with like-minded 'Sparklers' was what kept me coming back. I had similar interests as those I began to chat with and I found that those were the same people that would cheer you on when you succeeded and would be the first ones to offer a 'shoulder to cry on' when your days weren't going exactly as you wanted them to. I met many 'SparkFriends' and in the Spring/Summer of 2010, I found the 5% Challenges and became hooked.
I found a 'connection' with like-minded people and we began to work together toward our happier/healthier selves. Some of my best 'virtual friends' are connected with this site and with the 5% Challenges, and - I'm happy to say that I have had the distinct pleasure of meeting some of my 'virtual friends' in real life!
If I've held your interest to this point, I would like to tell you about the 5% Challenges. Basically, it is a 'Seasonal Challenge'. For 8 weeks a group of hundreds of people get together into one huge 'Challenge Community'. This 'community' is divided into smaller teams and together we work toward the same goal: to get healthier (and, in many cases - lighter) and we have a BLAST doing it!
