Where the fish are kings.

Thursday, July 11, 2019

Today was such a busy day. Taking a day off for the migraine put me back a bit for job #1. The nice thing is, busy days go by fast. Job #2 was the same, busy busy busy. During my 4 hours there I accrued 12k steps. Whew. That's on top of the 6k I had already walked for the day.

It is fishing season in Alaska. If you didn't know, Alaska is the king of Salmon fishing (pun totally intended). Folks from all over the world travel here in hopes of catching that record breaking king salmon.

Job #2 is a deli in our small towns local supermarket and I get to meet all sorts of great people from around the world, as they shop for the weeks fishing/camping trip. Of course the deli is the hub for salads, deli sliced meats, and fried chicken. All essentials for an extended camp.

It is actually very cool to see how excited they get, talking about how it is always been their dream to fly to Alaska and experience the thrill of catching that fish. I am not a fisherman myself, but I can't help catching a little bit of that fever these folks share with me. I ALMOST want to fish too. My husband could do it 24/7 if I'd let him.

Salmon are also a very important part of the Alaskan Indian population. For most of the villages, it is their primary source of food. Most of the state is national parks or indigenous owned land. The deep rich heritage is very much alive and well. If I'm lucky, and elder will stop by my deli and fill my head full of tales from the old ways. It is always such a treat!!!

Time for bed, so I will leave with my "happy things"

1. The gym today was not so busy. I was able to do my ST regime without having to skip machines and come back around.
2. The executive director for job #1 personally stopped by my office to check in on how I was doing after the migraine episode.
3. Today was weigh day, and I was down just a bit over a pound!

Sweet dreams my fellow Sparkers! Cheers!

Fascinating read! Here in Maryland we are big on blue crabs. For my recent anniversary we went to Tangier Island, VA, and I was told they are 2nd in soft shell crabs next to Alaska. Have you heard this? I do love salmon and catfish! Those are my two favorite fish, but I like most fish actually if cooked right. Your job at the deli sounds like fun. Glad you migraine is better. Mine was here for two days, but I think it is gone for good...I hope.

Always fun to hear about your days in Alaska. It is a destination I had on my bucket list, but have to settle for visiting there vicariously now. You have made it an enjoyable trip every day for me. The "old" stories you have heard from the natives must be fascinating. I've always enjoyed reading about the old exploration days.

Hope the fires which you told us about are more controlled. Take care!
