Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather gie place to wrath;for it is written, "Vengence is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord.
Romans 12:19

Dating from the late sixteenth century, the Latin motto of the royal Stuart dynasty of Scotland was Nemo me impune lacessit--"No one attacks me with impunity." Rendered in English it says, "No one can harm me unpunished." Today it is the virtual motto of the nation, appearing on badges and shields of many military organizations. Its origin is the ancient Highlands' clan structure of Scotland when clans sought vengeance on one another for wrongs suffered.
The Old Testament doctrine of measured retribution--"an eye for an eye" (Exodus 21:24) has been misconstrued as permission to exercise vengeance. Instead, that doctrine was established to prevent excessive punishment for crimes committed. Yes, crimes have punishments. But punishment is meted out by the non-emotional law, not by individuals who are angry for being harmed in some way. Vengeance is reserved for God, for only He can judge righteously and impartially. If you have been harmed or wronged, commit your loss to the Lord and leave room for His righteousness to balanced the outcome. Only His judgment is pure enough to be trusted.
