There are so many measures for those of us who are trying to live a healthy lifestyle - and yes - reach a healthy weight. There are standard weight charts, BMI, lipid levels, glucose readings and on and on.
Then there are the personal measures unique to each of us like fitting into an old pair of jeans, being able to take a brisk walk or climb a hill without gasping, or reaching a weight we were in high school or when we married or when we moved to our current house.
On my renewed journey since 1/1/2019, I have already met a 10% weight loss goal. It felt great to achieve a goal that took persistence over a period of time and to know per the medical community that I was doing something good for my health. Along with that 10% my lab results were stellar last time. I still have other goals ahead of me.
Although weighing under 200 pounds doesn't mean anything by the standard medical measures, it is a powerful progress marker for me. I have been hovering just above the 200 mark for a couple of weeks, as if my body were toying with me saying, "Not so fast, sister." Today, victory!
Sure by the BMI measure, I am still obese; but for anyone who has been past that 200 weight going either way, you know what I am talking about. Before digital scales, I always dreaded when the medical assistant would try out the weights on the scale then have to slide the next 50 lb. weight along the beam because I was over 200. The clunk it made felt like the feeling in my heart of failure and regret. Conversely, when the assistant used my old weight as a starting point then realized I was under 200 and moved the weight to the left with a smile, my heart felt light. I haven't had that latter feeling since 2010 - 9 long years of up, down and around.
So, today I celebrate a personal goal achievement. Next goal: BMI less than 30.

Congratulations of reaching that great milestone on the scale. Boy, do I ever know that "Not so fast, sister" feeling when waiting for the scale to drop into the next decade. Come on, already! I did that today. Now to hold on to it until weigh in, the day after Thanksgiving!
