The Speeding Firetruck Coming Straight Toward Me this Morning
Sunday, February 16, 2020
I think I'll see this image in my mind's eye for awhile, and still trying to figure out how this happened. Having a perfect driving record (I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I do have nothing on my record), there are times like these I realize that it is as much a matter of luck as it is driving skill.
Okay, I had the green left-turn arrow while the lanes next to me going straight had red light. My music was blasting a terrific tune, and I thought I'd looked right and left for oncoming vehicles before turning. But as I turned left, here comes a huge firetruck, lights blinking, sirens on, speeding right toward my driver's side.
It was just a second and I had already begun the turn, so all I could do was complete the turn. My shock at seeing the truck registered on my face. I mouthed "sorry" to those poor guys. But playing the scenario again for possible explanations, maybe since my side had red light, they didn't realize the left turn was green? Maybe they had more control to slow toward me than I realized? How did I not SEE that truck? Was it a case of looking, but not really seeing? The firehouse is right there, so they might have pulled out and sped up quickly while I was turning?
In any case, I am taking the responsibility for this and will make sure that in the future I actually SEE what I am looking for. Not just doing the cursory glance. And, maybe lower that music to hear the sirens? Yikes! Am I a lucky duck, or what?
Wishing all a sunshine-filled day.
