I feel naked!

Saturday, August 01, 2020

Finally got that dang boot off yesterday...that was a lonnnnng three weeks!
It was hot and heavy and my hips complained quite a bit.
Need to walk gently for a week and see if the immobilization worked to heal the tendon tear.
It felt AMAZING to get out there for a 20 minute walk today, during the coolest morning we have had in weeks...so far, so good!
AND...spent a few hours at the beach with my sister...another pleasure I have been denied.
My foot feels a bit strange but methinks (I hope) that is just some unused muscles waking up.
Wish me luck!

So, my son had a scan this week...Dana Farber still wouldn’t let his wife in with him due to COVID but she went anyway and waited in the car in a park (for 6 hours!!!) so she would be nearby and be with him for the two hour ride.
The results were about the same...no new tumors but some bit of growth of the existing ones.
Once again they will tweak his chemo to try to reduce the uncomfortable side effects and he will continue that every other week for as long as he can stand it.
In the meantime they will look for any trials he maybe eligible for..
Patrick’s 50th birthday is the 11th.
We weren’t able to find an amazing substitute for our great family trip that was planned but they are going to a hotel in nearby Newport and we will join them for a birthday dinner...getting a takeout meal for a wonderful seafood restaurant we all like.
Patrick really is fine with a scaled down celebration.
His priority is family right now.

Everybody...stay safe..stay sane...stay home!

Glad the boot’s off, I remember mine coming off after my broken ankle - heavenly, but weird too!

What a supportive family surrounding your beloved son. NOT easy: but doing what needs to be done/what's possible in these tough times.

Glad that they got that New Hampshire break anyhow -- and William is clearly in great spirits in that photo!!

My "boot" caused me so much misery (in late summer 2017) after I'd broken my left foot simply standing on it . . . what probably helped the most was wearing a "heel" on the right foot to even them out, the pain in my hip was ridiculous. Such a relief to get it off after it healed without the anticipated surgery . . . and apparently my bone density has much improved with the new Prolia/Vitamin D + calcium regime.

As far as the celebrations go, I'm all in on family time...for so many reasons. Like you won't remember what you ate, but that it tasted good. You will remember more the fun time you had, not where you had it!

Good luck on your ankle. Since we've been kicked out of the gym I've been walking instead of riding the prescribed bike. I've found that limiting my walks to 20-30 minutes and at a pace of about 2-2.5 mph, my hips and knees aren't complaining! I take as many as 3 trips during the day....what else is there to do? The shortened and slower walks give me a chance to focus on form, something that was sorely needed.

Lord that man is an inspiration. And hearing about the tender love he is surrounded with is a gift to us all.

Enjoy that birthday celebration with your darlings. Next year maybe there will be a bang up vacation.

I'm so glad to hear your foot has been freed (that must have been so hot), and I hope it continues to heal until you don't have to think about it any more. So glad you can walk on the beach again!

And it's good news that Patrick has no new tumors. How wonderful that you'll be able to celebrate his 5oth birthday together! It's too bad about the canceled trip to a faraway place, but I hope you have a wonderful time with your family at the Newport Hotel.

Glad you are rid of the boot! I still have one in my closet from broken bones in my foot years ago... hope I never have to use it again.

I'm glad that Patrick's scan didn't show any significant change. I hope they are able to find a suitable drug study for him to take part in.

I'm glad that you will be together for his birthday.

So glad you are free of that boot. Walk carefully.
Hug to you and prayers for Patrick. I’m glad he is enjoying his beautiful family. I’m sure this is a constant worry for you. But, glad the scan is showing some stability to buy time for a trial.
    Much love.
