My duties are done (I'm a phone call away)

Sunday, September 20, 2020

DD1 went home with her brood after spending 5 days under Mom's care. After all, as she told her dad, "I'm a mom, I miss my kids and husband. I want to sleep in my own bed. I have to show them I can do this."

They all trampled in after soccer last evening at dinner time to see Mommy for the first time. Hahaha! There were a few "Hi, Mom(s)." A peck on the cheek and they ran over to the couch to see what Pop-pop was watching on TV. More importantly the 2 boys asked Pop to get out his jars of coins so they could count them. Little Miss grabbed the big lego-like toys and started building. DD1 sat in her chair alone while her husband said "They DID miss you".

I made boxed mac-n-cheese (ick) and replaced the elbow macaroni with farfalle (bow ties). It was a hit. The adults had the last of my frozen beef barley soup so guess what I'm making today? Maybe beef and elbow macaroni?

She was ready. Steady on her feet and we'd started walking the sidewalk. She's got stairs so they'll be tough for a few days. She looks good. The hernia repair was the most striking as her upper belly miraculously was pulled back together. Good call the the smart doctors who did the work and shame on the one who kept missing it.

Then came the kid meltdowns.
One hit the other. Another sprawled across the table screaming I don't want the cookie if I can only have one! Another tried to jump into Mom's lap in an attempt to whine. Her Daddy grabbed her, scolded the hitter. Mom tried to calm the screamer.

I didn't even wave goodbye last night as my hands were full of dirty dishes.

Poor DD1! My former colleague Dr G had 1-2-3-FOUR C-sections, but AFAIK, no serious complications...
(I would've been done baby DONE after surgery #1!)

Hope she continues to have uncomplicated healing!

Yup, that's absolutely the way families ACTUALLY work: no sentimentality, no sugar coating, solid solid support.

    Whew. You've been a rock.

And so the story goes, the world keeps a spinning. How fortunate that DD1 had you as her escape, care giver, her partner in crime, her Mom. Not often does one achieve this with three at home. I never did. No one stepped in, I’ve tried to initiate the care and relief on the other end. As I read your account I’m smiling and nodding for while the characters are different, the story is often largely/loosely the same. Of course your hands were full, right along with your heart. Amen to a quiet house, time to regroup and jump back into your normalish rhythm. We certainly feel the need for it, these aging bodies like to fold a wee earlier than we once did...

    Be well, chica...enjoy your respite.

I hope she gets the rest she needs at home.
Are the kids in person schooling?
    That would help.
    Now...you rest up!

LOL!! Things can get back to "normal" now for everyone. A version of what is called "tooth and claw - natural law". LOL

I love beef barley soup and can eat boxed mac and cheese occasionally if I encounter it. Loved my mom's beef and noodles and her chicken and dumplings - my favorite things she made.

OH my goodness. THEY MISSED MOMMY! LOL Bet that melted your DD's heart (of COURSE it did!) and good for SIL stepping up to the plate to get the kids untangled and managed.

You did a good job! HUGS and now . . . breathe.
