Invasion of the lantern fly
Friday, October 23, 2020
The spotted lanternfly was first detected in the United States in Berks County, northwest of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On September 29, 2014, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Game Commission confirmed its presence. Based on its host affinities, it presented a threat to the state's grape, fruit tree, and logging industries. (Wikipedia)
I saw my first of many today dead on a sidewalk...dead is where they should be. This is about 20 miles from my house so it's only a matter of time.
For size comparison:
We should see them in my area soon. Agriculturalists have recommended we kill any we see any way we can. Sad. Sad for the bugs who are only doing what they do. Sad that they are extremely destructive. They are native to South China, Taiwan and Vietnam and were accidently transported here.
What's next, murder hornets? Oh, yeah. They are already in the northwest!
