I Will Be A Light Wherever I Am Planted

My mom inspired by example. In my early childhood years, during Lent, she denied herself foods she felt were unhealthy, specifically desserts or sugar or bread. As I grew into teenhood she gave up bad habits such as wasting time playing solitaire or watching soap operas. A few years later she decided to give of herself. This included reading the Bible, praying or practicing kind deeds for others. I still did not participate in Lent with her. But I watched and listened. Eventually, I wanted to be more and more like my kind, thoughtful and generous mother. Practicing faith is an ongoing struggle for me. Sometimes it was for her too, but I think her determination to live her faith during Lent gave her skills. One rainy afternoon toward the end of her life, she felt sad about living at Avamere, about missing Dad and her siblings and friends. After some discussion, I watched her transform as she checked her thoughts, straightened her posture and stated, “I WILL be a light wherever I am planted.” That phrase has remained in the forefront of my thoughts ever since. Mom showed me what it means to live by faith. On dark and gloomy days, I remember her words and follow her example. “I will be a light wherever I am planted.”

Dear Lord: Thank you for the gift of light. Help me to grow more in your ways and to be your light to shine before others.

Matthew 5:14-16 ESV “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
