Thought and Prayer for Tuesday, May 11, 2021

Tuesday, May 11, 2021

It is very hard to talk to someone who is not looking at us. When people are looking around or looking down at their phones while we are speaking to them, it is just plain rude. We want to them to look at us so we know they are paying attention. We should do the same for them. If they are speaking to us, we should give them our full attention. We can let them know we are listening by leaning in a little, making eye contact and by our body language. It is so important to let others know we are listening when they are talking. It is a sign of respect to them and we are letting them know they matter and we care.

If we want to hear God’s Holy Spirit, we need to truly listen. We can’t physically see Jesus but we can close our eyes and imagine His face. We can bow down and close our eyes so we are physically focused on hearing from Him. When we imagine we are looking into the eyes of Jesus, we are letting Him know we truly want to have a conversation with Him. Just as the song says, when we turn our eyes upon Jesus and look full in His wonderful face, the things of the earth will grow strangely dim. And when we do this, we will better hear what God wants to tell us.

Hebrews 12:1-2a “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.” (NLT)

1. Write what you do to focus on and hear God.
2. List ways you can visualize Jesus as you listen to His Holy Spirit.
3. Know God wants you to pay attention as He speaks.
4. Seek ways to fully see Jesus when you open your heart to hear Him.

Dear Lord, we want to see Jesus. We want to experience a real conversation with You as we pray and wait for Your answer. We want to visualize Jesus’ face so we can look into His eyes as we pray and as we listen to what Your Holy Spirit has to say. We want to keep our eyes on Jesus not only when we pray and when we listen, but also when we go through our daily lives. Help us to draw near to You all day long and intently listen for Your instruction. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

James 4:8 “Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” (NIV)

Matthew 6:22 “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.” (NLT)

Ephesians 1:18-19a “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (NIV)

Psalm 119:18 “Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.” (NLT)
