May 12, 2021 FILTERS
Filters are good for many things. We use them to remove what we don’t want and to get more of what we do want. We filter in things that will help us and we take out what doesn’t. Filters are good to remove the unnecessary and keep the necessary. Filters are used in photography, chemistry, our homes, computers, etc. Without filters, we would deal with a lot of garbage we don’t need in our lives.
When we apply filters to our listening skills, we can really listen to what others are saying and determine why they may feel that way. We can filter out any emotions of our own and think about what they may be dealing with. We can filter out any distractions that keep us from hearing and understanding them. We can even filter out our own emotions so we can truly see what they are dealing with.
God wants us to filter out things that are not of Him. When we do this, we can better communicate to Him. And we can better listen to Him. We have many distractions in life. It is important we take time to recognize them and determine if they are hindering us from hearing God. Let’s practice filtering out the garbage in our minds, so we can hear when God is speaking to us.
James 1:21 “So get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls.” (NLT)
1. Write what things in your mind you need to filter out.
2. List things that keep creeping up in your mind when you need to be listening.
3. Know God wants you to focus more on Him and less on the world and on worry.
4. Practice listening to God and others by applying a filter to keep everything else out.
Dear Lord, our minds hold a great deal of information. You created us to be able to think and to process information. However, many times we have more information than we need going through our minds. We have unnecessary thoughts, unneeded ideas and unwanted desires that keep us from truly hearing You and others. Help us, we pray, to filter out those things we just don’t need running through our minds so we can be better listeners, Lord. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
Philippians 4:8 “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” (NLT)
Job 11:14 “Get rid of your sins, and leave all iniquity behind you.” (NLT)
Ephesians 4:31 “Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior.” (NLT)
Colossians 3:5a “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you.” (NLT)
