Thought and Prayer for Friday, May 14, 2021

It has been said we are the average of the five people we hang around the most. It has also been said we should be aware of the company we keep because who we associate with the most can help or hurt us. We do need to mindful of who we hang out with for the sake of our reputation but also for the sake of our minds. When we consistently hang around bad influencers and listen to negative talk, it can quickly change our minds and attitudes. We need to be extra careful about what we allow ourselves to listen to.

We may believe we can handle the dirty language and the coarse talk but after a while, we become more accustomed to hearing and seeing these things. Pretty soon, we feel it is okay to listen to them and we may find ourselves slipping away from God because we are getting too engrossed in the things of the world. What are we listening to that we should not be listening to?? Who may be leading us down a wrong path in life? What are we filling our minds with? We need to remember the phrase “garbage in, garbage out” and know that is the truth. We should always be aware of what we are listening to.

1 Corinthians 5:9-11 “When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.” (NLT)

1. Write what types of things you watch or listen to.
2. List the attributes of the five people you hang around the most.
3. Know God wants you to surround yourselves with godly people.
4. Remember whatever you put into your mind will affect your thoughts, words and actions.

Dear Lord, we are only as good as the company we keep. We know we need other fellow believers in our lives to help us and encourage us to do what is right. If we hang out with those who follow the ways of the world, we will quickly be led down a wrong path in life. Help us to choose to listen to what is godly and true rather than the things of the world. We want to fill our minds with good and not evil. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

James 1:26 “If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless.” (NLT)

Psalm 1:1-2 “Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night.” (NLT)

Luke 6:44-45 “Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (NIV)

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for ‘bad company corrupts good character.’” (NLT)
