Changes and Struggles 2021

Tuesday, June 08, 2021

I've been going through the cycles of grief for some things related to my health.. and on the 12th year anniversary of the first Spark Convention, I found out today about SparkPeople closing on August 17.

cles.asp?id=2659

I had just restarted using the nutrition tracker, trusting the SP formulas for ranges the most, and lost 17 lbs in the past couple of months. The success, safety and security of Spark brought me back.

I'm feeling a lot of feels about reading the news that SP is closing in August.... The world certainly has changed. I don't log into a laptop at home and the Spark app scroll didn't engage me as much as seeing everything full screen.

It was through these blogs that I journaled seriously for awhile, and made a conscious effort to begin the process of retraining my brain and how I thought about my life and events that was a major part of my previous weight loss success.

A couple of years ago I regained half of the weight I lost, and then maintained my new weight while exploring intuitive eating. I do believe in Health at Every Size and the importance of fitness and strength no matter what your shape or size. Sometimes being in a weight loss environment is disheartening, with so many people focused on labeling things as good or bad.

That's one of the reasons I loved the Done Girl team so much, because the refocus on what we can and will do was refreshing in diet culture.

My TMI if you made it this far...

-I'm awaiting results and facing possible Cancer. I just had a procedure and expect a bigger surgery in the next few months.

-I'm filing for bankruptcy because a zombie debt default judgement has come up with a wage garnishment at my work (which I believe threatens my job).

-I just got a raise yesterday, (but still receive wages that are not in line with the cost of living in San Diego) and need to seriously re-evaluate my work/life balance, and the true meaning of self-care.

Life moves on. It keeps going whether you are in or out of touch with friends, in good health and in poor health, in happiness and sadness.

The best we can do is live it.
Take care. emoticon

You were a huge part of me finding the strength to keep searching for a solution to my war with my body and my weight. You were part of the reason I can back to Spark and part of the reason I stuck it out until I found my "cure."

Thanks and good luck. Blessings on you and your journey.

    XOXO

I'm always happy to see you post, but sorry to see you might have Cancer. I'm 71 and a couple of months ago i had bleeding and had to go to the ER for a Cat Scan. I had a total hysterectomy in '97, but he told me they could have left some cervical cells. They didn't find cancer so I saw the Ob/Gyn and he said when we get old the tissue gets thin, and it can bleed, so he gave me estrogen and that has helped.
Vaginal estrogen doesn't circulate threw the body, but just improves the tissue.
I take progesterone as my regular doctor has me on it as he says it helps prevent osteoporosis and improves sleep. He has me on Metformin and Nature Thyroid and a weekly shot of Bydureon. It has helped me keep off the 50# I lost 4 yrs ago. Metformin has been shown to help prevent Cancer, since Cancer cells lover SUGAR. My blood sugar is now 84, so I no longer have cravings.

Diet culture is really harmful to a lot of people. I just recall seeing someone on FB justifying their photograph of an ice cream cone by saying she was going to burn off the calories later by doing some physical activity. I thought to myself that that is exactly what we should not perpetuate - the justification of what we are eating.

I started following The Nutrition Tea on Instagram and I love what she has to say about diet culture.

I am really glad to stop counting, tracking, watching the scale, etc., so I may be a rarity, but I'm not that sad that Spark is not going to be available to this Canadian anymore. I'm going to get so much time back by not being here, but I want to be here until the end and it's not for the tracking, it's for the great friends I've made here.

I'm sorry to hear about your financial issues and the possible cancer. As many people have already pointed out, cancer can be beaten, and in your case, it's only a possibility, not a certainty. I too had scary cancer moment. I had pre-cancerous cells on my cervix in the mid-90's and it was taken care of with laser surgery and I have had clear PAP tests since then.

Sending you much love and light!

I am so sorry to hear about your situation. I've had cancer and know it can be beaten.

I am scurrying around looking for a new site to replace Spark but haven't found the diet, exercise, member lead teams, and blogs. If you find something please let me know.

You really motivated me in Done Girl.

I wish you all the best. emoticon

With so much happening in your life it is sad that you are facing another change like losing Spark. You are correct to say we move on. We will figure this out. Meantime I will be thinking of you and hoping for good news from the doctor. emoticon

    Hi Wolf,

I'm so sorry about your news. But, I'm here to tell you I survived stage 4 breast cancer 28 years ago. I was in LA, CA, and had a good Oncologist, Dr. John S. Link, M. D. Medical Director (then) at Memorial Breast Center in Long Beach, CA. Dr. Carry Kaufman did my lumpectomy I refused the total mastectomy.

So, keep your head up high and do your research for the best doctors you can find and you too will come through this. My thoughts are with you and if you want to talk I will give you my number.

    (((Hugs))) Bobbie
