67 weeks ... the coffee klatch begins to regather

Monday, June 14, 2021

For the first time in 67 weeks, DH's coffee klatch group has begun to reassemble.

It's been a tough one.

Personally, I'm wondering what they'll learn as they begin to reconnect after having been physically separated for so long.

This week, we expect that some of the establishments that have kept their dinining areas closed will begin to reopen them. Indoor dining has been allowed in our county for sometime. However, many establishments have chosen to keep their dining areas shuttered. Many of them have survived the pandemic with drive-thru and curbside pick-up.

The area in which we reside is what I describe as a "bedroom community". Most folks commute to work each day and actually spend very little time in the community in which they live other than to sleep and scramble around on the weekend taking care of everything that couldn't be addressed during the week while they worked. The pandemic has changed that for so many!

Many of the restaurants here in town have actually fared far better during the pandemic. Folks are working from home. Many continued to order food for take-out. Many of the restaurants here already had established take-out areas set aside in their restaurants. So, it was not necessary for them to re-create the wheel. They simply pivoted: directing more energy and attention to take-out and some of them established/expanded outdoor dining areas that will likely remain permanent,

I know my husband will be overjoyed to see the friend he's not seen in SO LONG. Prior to the pandemic, these guys started every morning together. It's been hard on them.

This morning they opted to meet someplace other than their pre-pandemic locale because its dining area remains shuttered. DH spoke to someone at that establishment over the weekend and asked when they'd be reopening their doors. Their response: sometime this week.

Tomorrow, the State of California will open the *barn doors* and restrictions will be dramatically reduced.

Like the cicadas, foks are re-emerging ...

This sounds so hopeful. When your DH gets this restarted, I’m sure it will be a great mood booster.

I’m back to face-to-face teaching next week. Challenging but reinvigorating!

As a “science” person, I have watched the reopening here with surprise. No rise in cases. My DD who is much better at statistics than I, reminded me that the infection rate numbers are just as high if you remove the 62% who were fully vaccinated.

I dread the India renamed Delta varient rise in Europe and now responsible for 6% of US cases. Much more contagious and faster and deadlier onset.

Trying to stay hopeful but cautious. So glad I’m retired.

Since I live in a LARGE tourist town, 200,000 people came for Memorial day! I still wear my masks indoors OR outside if there are many people. We do not got to the main part of town, anyway, but I just feel safer. I also KNOW people do not care about MY health. So I just keep our world together as best I can. Still washing hands a lot & sanitizer. Etc.

THX for friending me in my 'real' email. I'm not on FB & the maintenance team looks lovely, I joined, but will need time to figure it out!

emoticon Glad you are feeling good enough to PLAY with SP before it closes!

Thankfully our favorite Japanese restaurant survived the pandemic. We went Friday night and it was packed. It's a small "hole in the wall" spot in a strip mall 31 miles from our house. They were backed up with a large take out order too. It was nice

YES! Our diner survived by doing drive-thru, touchless pick up. They are now re-opened @ 100% capacity (though we go @ 6 am every Saturday and it's an understatement to say, it's not crowded!) We are so very glad that it survived. Many businesses did not.

I really hope that your DH's coffee klatch can re-assemble -- we really appreciate the ability to re-connect w/some folks socially responsibly. HUGS

As of tomorrow, we can discard masks outside and inside if the business allows it. I am comfortable with outside but not so sure about inside. Oh, this is in So Cal. emoticon

Yes it has been quite a change here in Michigan also. Most places you go to now, a mask is only required if you aren't vaccinated. I'm not sure how they will tell the difference, but I'm hoping people are honest.

We actually went to our favorite restaurant with our son yesterday for dinner. It was so different eating there once again. Only one familiar waitress was working. She says they are so understaffed right now.

I just hope that we all keep taking precautions and not go back to our pre-pandemic ways totally. I still feel social distancing is still best for now. Not going overboard just yet. I don't feel we will ever get rid of this virus, just like the flu viruses we deal with every fall/winter.

Take care Jeanne, still trying to figure out that Weight Maintaining Group. Not sure if I am doing it right or not yet.

Yes! Now if we can manage it safely, between vaccinations and being sensible about group sizes and distance!

Happy for the emerge-ers, being one of them, myself. Still not going crazy about it, though.
