Yes, sometimes you have to listen to what your body is saying to you! I have to modify exercise because of back and knee issues but most days I can do full workouts with no issue~

Yes I have modified exercise routines to fit my fitness level.
I do you tube but if difficult modify the routine .
I was sidelined once due to injury.
I had to learn to modify .
Sometimes trainers expect high.intensity.
I won't push myself just because a trainer on YouTube is.
So yes I'll modify....

I modified a workout on Tuesday. I had an outdoor walk scheduled but severe weather was moving in and potentially hitting when I would be outside. Plus, it was HOT 91 F/33 C and HUMID and I don't do well in that combination. So, I popped in a DVD for a similar time (75 minutes) and I worked up a great sweat.

Are you resting between? And are you pushing yourself or pushing yourself beyond your capabilities? Sometimes we mentally don't want to do things and other times we are really trying to do things beyond our current range. Not pushing yourself at all will make it difficult to improve. Pushing yourself beyond can and will hurt you.
I would say to stop the first time, but go back to that video later (not later the same day, but one of the next few workouts). When you go back, cut short the reps so that you can make two circuits. So if you were supposed to be doing 10 reps, cut back to six. Then you can build up to seven, then slowly up to ten over a few weeks or months. If there were weights involved, back off in the same way. You want to build up to it.

-google first. ask questions later.

Short answer under those circumstances "NO" (I wouldn't force myself to do more) and "YES" I would cut it short, and I have cut it short many times.

You are better to do what you can safely. Forcing yourself can and does lead to poor form which in turn leads to injury ... think stress fractures, vomiting, passing out, painful muscle tears etc. etc..... I've seen all of those as a former First Responder.

Just remember, an instructor on YouTube is NOT training someone they know. They cannot train according to THAT viewer's requirements. If you are referring to yourself, then you have to remember that you have a serious health challenge so DO listen to your body! You are better to do 2 or 3 of something with good form than 5-6 with increasingly poor (dangerous) form!

Another thing that causes a modification is weather. If I have a training run or walk scheduled and it's raining or something, I'll find an indoor track or do a comparable DVD. If it's raining for a race I paid for, I get wet.

I have also done races in the bitter cold (as cold as -12 F/-24 C with a wind chill) and hot 100 F/38 C in humidity. How does one do that? You wear weather appropriate clothing and adjust your feet. Icy roads and paths slow you down. So does humidity.

I modify all the time. Right now, running causes issues and so I am walking my planned on foot workouts and races. I don't have a gym membership because I can't afford it and, although I love classes, my knees make getting up and down from the floor really difficult.

So, I have a grand collection of over 50 DVDs. Most of them have multiple options so I have hundreds of options. They are cardio and strength. I also have a folder of some really good workouts on paper.

Do I ever cut short? No. I would only do that if I seriously injured myself like tore a ligament, broke a bone somehow or sprained something. Those issues haven't happened.

I also know my body's limitations. I have arthritis in my knee. That limits me. When I can run, I do walk/run intervals. I hate burpees and squat thrusts. HATE THEM. So I don't do them. I will jog in place or do high knees or something when I encounter them.

Even after knee surgery in January, I had my PT exercises. I did those and had to keep walking to daily activities and no running. After 2 weeks, I was able to get back to walking and ease into running. I discovered that the years of knee issues caused muscle issues and the idiot surgeon didn't bother to order PT with a human being so know I have to figure that out.

I tried to “work through the pain” and ended up with a stress fracture so now I am more cautious and if I am feeling off I will certainly modify or dial it back a bit

When that happens, I do the one set, take a break by doing something else....then I try for the second set.

My Physical therapist said Not To Work Through Any Pain!! and there weren't any time limits on getting my reps done for the day. If I had to stop, I did. Sometimes I didnt' get back to it until the next day....

The goal with any exercise is to maintain your fitness and slowly IMPROVE it...not hurt yourself!

Say for instance, the youtube fitness trainer says do 2 sets of a circuit. But what if you can only do 1? What if at the end of the 1st circuit, you already feel like dying and your form is beginning to suffer, and you think, no way I'm going to do another set of this!

Would you force yourself to do 2 sets anyway, or gradually work up to it?
