So sorry for your pain (mental and physical). What wonderful comments on this thread. I felt better just reading them! May I add the following for your contemplation:

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) & Diet

The Mcdougall plan has dramatic positive effects for patients with Multiple Sclerosis. "A treatment that is cost-free, side-effect-free and stops the disease in over 90% of those people with early disease. The low-fat diet treatment for Multiple Sclerosis was developed by Roy Swank, MD, former head of the department of Neurology at the Oregon Health & Science University.

Oh, wow. I can't even imagine what you are going through. You have been through a lot.

I don't have any advice except Don't Give Up. You are worth the fight. You are going to have a bunch more challenges and you will need to be equipped to fight them. Manage your stress. Manage your food. Manage your finances. You will need all of them. Deep breaths. Every positive step you take will help you.

It's hard to realize, but no matter how bad your situation is giving up will not make it better. You've got some great advice here and hope that you will follow through getting help.

Hi. I really feel for you. You have been through a lot, and having to deal with a chronic illness doesn't make it any easier. You also gave up smoking at the same time. Often a person will find something else to do with their hands/mouth when that happens, and also often eating or drinking more is that something else. My late hubby started to get addicted to peppermints until I pointed out that he was eating nearly quite a few in a day (and was also starting to gain weight.)

I strongly suggest that you talk with you Dr about all that you have mentioned here. Ask for a referral to a Grief Therapist. You are, after-all grieving your life as you knew it re your health, the loss of a best friend; and financial instability. You have also shifted which can impact on a person emotionally, too.

th-grief-and-loss.htm

Good luck, but I am sure you won't need it. I have a feeling that you WILL be able to turn this around and come out the other side smiling.

Hugs,
Kris

Hang in there! Keep on praying, and keep on keeping on!

All you can do is just carry on, and think positive!

I am on dialysis and am finding the fluid and dietary restrictions very hard, but if I'm still here on this Earth, then God has still something for me to do.

I don't know what but I just have to carry on living and trying my best with God's help!

MYTURNINFL,
your note touched a chord in me. I had brain surgery a number of years ago, was unable to do my former work, had poor memory (which I still have), got depressed and didn't want to get out of bed, just lay there and feel miserable.

I pulled my way out of that slowly. Just leaving the house, going for a walk, seeing people, even just seeing strangers, was so much better than laying around in the house and feeling unhappy.

I had to admit that while out, I felt marginally happy, or at least not as sad. I turned shopping into a challenge. I'd go shopping at 3 grocery stores, recording prices, and buying the lowest from each place. It took a lot of time, and I'd save maybe $5 on a $25 grocery bill ... big deal, just $5. But it got me out, got my mind onto the game of that.

Lastly, I don't know how to suggest anything on getting down credit card debt. I had a friend who worked on one card at a time, and when one was paid down she put it in water and froze it in a block of ice in her freezer. Not destroyed, but hard to get at.

MYTURNINFL,

I'm sorry to hear you're going through a very rough time. Try not to beat yourself up over regaining the weight. that's something that has happened to us all. We're all experts at gaining, losing and regaining the weight.

That was the past. you can't change the past, but you CAN influence and change the future.

Just take things one day at a time, one step at a time. if you try to do everything at once, you'll end up frustrated. What to do is make a list of all the things you can to achieve or fix in your life. Then you work down the list one item at time.

No matter how bad things may seem now, things can change for the better.

Hello,

I am sorry to hear you have had so many stress-generating things occur this past year. Stress can absolutely trigger unhealthy eating, as most of us have experienced at one time or another. You have already proven to yourself that you can lose weight, so you can definitely do it again!

What do you do to relieve stress? Are you able to take walks? A walk can reduce stress levels and is good fitness at the same time. See this article for 10 Ways to De-Stress in 5 Minutes or Less:

Starting a mindfulness routine is another great way to reduce stress and let you focus on yourself for a few minutes. If this is new to you, I recommend checking out this article for an overview of benefits and suggestions to get started:

I hope this helps and wish you all the best!

This time last year I had almost reached my goal. I had lost 51 ponds. I had 8 pounds to go to reach my goal.
Then I decided to quit smoking. I have gained back 40 of the pounds I had already lost.
My life has gone in a down hill spiral over the past year. EVERY THING that causes someone to eat has happened. I moved, lost my best friend, maxed out all my credit cards and went into deep debt. I have M.S. and no longer can work and am living on Social Security only. I even over drafted my bank account for the first time in my life.
I am stressed to the max!!!!
