TRUEPEACENIK,
yes, protein and kidneys, ... its between a rock and a hard place. You need protein, about 50 to 60 grams a day, but if you have kidney problems it can be difficult, ... no good answers.

60 grams of protein is about a 10 ounce steak, or 8 eggs, or a mixture, more eggs, less steak ... or other foods with protein, but you do need about 50 to 60.

Going to jump on the "no fast food" bandwagon. Fast food is mostly always processed, and your most healthy bet is to choose whole foods. I know it's difficult when your only choice might be to eat at a fast-food restaurant or a gas station convenience store so It's always a good idea to have a low-carb, low-sugar protein bar with you. They're easy to throw into a backpack, gym bag, handbag, or briefcase and they won't spoil if you carry one around for a time.

Ugh. The Siren Song of “suicide snacks”, the term my ex used for fast food.
Because they’ll kill you.

Isn’t the protein an issue with kidney disease?
And, arguably protein is the only benefit of eating a burger.

I have a policy, “don’t eat things that go through windows.”

We travel quite a bit, so we are forced to eat out/and or fast food. I eat 1/2 of whatever it is I order, or I have asked to order from the children's menu, and pay a fee. They have never said no.

I agree. If we don't read everything or cook the food ourselves, it is easy to be fooled.

It is sad when one DOES read the ingredients and still chooses to eat crap food. It is no surprise the consequences, wasted money on crap food, bad medical results, tight clothes, the list goes on.

Nothing beats home cooked with fresh ingredients, controlled portions and made with love.

Fast food is the worst way to stay healthy! I have read plenty on how the fast food and restaurant and even the supermarket stores have slipped sugar, salt and fat into seemingly good food. I look at labels before I buy food and look up restaurant nutrition before I select a dish at a restaurant.
Got to go, will post more later.....

I don't know why you routinely - and publicly - insist this time will be different and you will not eat fast food.
You eat it anyway... every.single.time.

EOWYN24241,
you've written a number of times that you are trying to avoid fat.

"It's sky high in calories, sodium & fat!"

"Not to mention the fat!"

I don't see a reason to avoid fat when you are on dialysis. The thing to be careful on is:
- potassium
- phosphorous
- sodium
- calcium
- liquids

A site like this one:
www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/kidne
y-disease/kidney-failure/hemodialysis/
eating-nutrition

Says:
"Vegetable oils—such as olive oil, canola oil, and safflower oil—are good sources of calories and are the healthiest way to add fat to your diet if you need to gain weight. Use them generously on breads, rice, and noodles only if your renal dietitian tells you to add calories to your diet."

So fats themselves don't seem to be an issue for kidneys.

That page also says:
"Renal dietitians encourage most people on hemodialysis to eat high-quality protein because it produces less waste for removal during dialysis. High-quality protein comes from meat, poultry, fish, and eggs. Avoid processed meats such as hot dogs and canned chili, which have high amounts of sodium and phosphorus."

So they want you to avoid processed meats, like sausages and wieners that have sodium, phosphorus and probably other additives. I don't see how a fatty steak like prime rib would not be high quality protein.

I don't see how fat is a problem, other than it has calories.

Don't blame the nurses. You made a choice to try that burger. You do seem to love eating at places like McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Texas Chicken even though you've been disappointed in the food more than once.

What is the attraction ? Why can't you go more than a week without a snack or meal from places like KFC, McDonalds, Burger King, etc ?

Here is a bit of information most consumers don't know or remember:

When you see a commercial, most often the item is enhanced via, paint, coloring, food coloring, etc in order to make it visually appealing. Example: strawberries with chocolate sauce are actually fake strawberries with brown paint, and a highlighter so they glisten. The "food stylists" spend hours upon hours (sometimes 5-6 hrs or more), getting food to LOOK perfect for the client. Commercials and photos are not real.

I know this, because I used to work in commercials.

It is a shame that you sacrifice your health for something not real, regardless of what others say. (Just because you want to feel good about eating something you know you shouldn't eat) I don't understand why you wouldn't surprise your mom and make a delish burger at home and share something tasty and made with controlled ingredients.

To say you never will eat crap food is a WISH, because something else will be a craving that you will give in to. (Read your past posts, where you've said that).

Without a plan which makes it a GOAL, you only have a WISH.

Just a little update :

I confess that I tried that burger once (but I shared it with my Mom) and was sorely disappointed! It wasn't all that wonderful! Those mischievous nurses also confessed that they didn't really try the burger, but was pulling my leg the whole time! Sheesh!

After that, I vowed never to get fast food again! So far, I've been only eating healthy. I am also trying to limit my fluid consumption.

Well, tomorrow is the next blood test. No matter what the result, I refuse to take the more expensive phosphate blocker. I can't afford it!

For your burger craving, grill one yourself out of a low-fat hamburger and skip the bun. Add veggies and enjoy!

There will always be people in our lives that can do, can eat, can buy things that we can not.

We all have limitations that we have to accept and move on.

Think of this.... you wish, dream to be able to eat all the crap food that others can and do. But the reality is, you can not. That's your life. For me, I wish and dream how nice it would be not to worry about household or medical expenses like you do. But the reality of my life is I can not. My life is measured, and budgeted everyday.

Everyone has things they want, but we all have limitations, yours is nutrition. Mine financial. Life is about making the best of what you can do and not sweating the small stuff (ie a crappy fast food burger) stop dwelling on what you can't have or how delish someone "said" it was and move on.

I can't focus on the beautiful "things" someone else has, I compliment them and move on.

Stop being envious of others and start to live your best life.

"I'm guessing it's a bad idea to eat that....." .... GUESSING it's a bad idea???

I think you already KNEW that it was a bad idea!!! Burger King and similar joints are NOT suitable places for you to get any food from. They are VERY detrimental to your health!!

After reading the book Salt, Sugar and Fat, How the Food Industry Hooked Us by Michael Moss, I will never eat a fast food burger ever again. The thought that I would be eating the meat from over thirty different cows just turns my stomach.

Here is a screen shot for Burger King's nutrition information. It's a very deceptive chart. Looking at it, you'd think the first column is the calorie list. Hey, 438 calories for a burger isn't bad ! Except that's the serving size. the actual calorie count is the second column.

So, the triple whopper with cheese really has 1220 calories and 1400 mg of sodium. The triple stacker, which is similar to the triple cheese burger you craved has 1370 calories.

I decided not to eat that burger. I looked up the nutrition stats online. It was over 1,000 calories & more than 1g of sodium. Not to mention the fat!

I decided it wasn't worth it.

Elaine,

Why do you find Burger King food so irresistible ?

If you lived in the US, you could order the double cheese Whopper.

Maybe you'd rather have their stacker.

Don't they look oh so yummy ?

You're not guessing... you KNOW that you are not supposed to eat that with your specific health issues.
Yet you continue to obsess over (and indulge in!) fast food instead of your health.
I keep hoping someday things will sink in, but that is looking hopeless.

You already know the answer to this question, you have asked similar ones in the past. Let's be clear, you always having cravings.

You crave crap food because you NEVER have stopped eating it. You want what you want when you want. No matter what we say and have said has never changed you or how you look at crap foods. Replace the word CRAVE with WANT and tell the truth.

Instead of asking us, why don't you ask your doctor and/or dietitian. Maybe ask the nurses that you see several times a week at dialysis.

Maybe refer to your specific allowed foods.

I'm not sure what diet, doctor, or nurse that treat dialysis patients would think that crap fast food is allowed, but you should check with your professionals that are treating you.

I too think you'd better avoid that kind of food. Remind yourself of your goals to lose weight and be as healthy as possible.
Also realize that this type of 'food' does nothing for your body, it does not give you nutrients you need.

Burger King has some new burgers, I tried finding the nutrition stats online but couldn't find it. But I am guessing it is very high in calories, fat and sodium.

I has nacho cheese sauce, american cheese and swiss cheese. It also has 3 beef patties. It's called a triple cheese burger, I think.

I'm guessing it's a bad idea to eat that.....
