I really liked 31 flavors Bublegum Ice Cream, with the sugar cone. That was 3 treats in one - the cone, ice cream and the bubblegum to chew after it all. hahaha

I used to jump off roofs with an umbrella hoping to land softly.

If I did that now, I'd break both ankles and legs.

In the 60s, in Brea California, I rode through a bike course in my school's parking lot, passed a quiz, had a headlight installed on my bike and a rear view mirror. Police gave me my bicycle license to carry, put a sticker on my seat post, and I was a 3rd grader ready to ride to piano lessons, the new fangled 7-11 store, Baskin Robbins, school.

Oh, no helmets or pads required.

I'm not even near perfect, but I know someone who is.

Big Valley, Bonanza, Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys were in the line up on Sunday mornings for us. We went to church each week, so if we hurried and got dressed early enough we could watch all of them. :)

Ball games in the roads, just call a time-out and scatter off to the side when a car came by and meet back in the middle after it passed.

Moms at home, kids at home...not at work or daycare
(I think I might be the only stay at home mom in the neighborhood and we home-educate, so our kids are home during the day ) Home educating happens to offer the closest thing to 'the good ole' days'. People walk by, and mention how they remember when THEY used to play the way OUR kids play now.

Yes I agree there are thing I don't remember. But I do remember a fair amount.
Like how free we were to walk and ride our bikes any where we wanted to and were not afraid of any thing. We just had good clean fun. But I was a kid in the 50's and 60's not in today's crazy word!!

Like everyone else, we used to ride our bikes all over town, but we knew where the blackberry trees were by the street, fir trees, pomegranate bushes, all of it was free snacks. Use pitched tents in the next door empty lot, used flashlights to read comic books until dark, then ran inside. Who would have ever thought our comic book heroes would be turned into movies. I would be years later when I saw my first movie and that was at a drive inn.

When I was a kid we'd take an old metal skate (those 50+ will know what I'm talking about) Slide it apart; nail 1/2 to the end of a 2x4 about 18" long; nail the other to the other end; nail a wooden crate to the front and nail a 1x1 or if you were really lucky, a wooden dowel to the top of the crate and BAM! The 50's version of the kids Razors that we see them riding today. And today's seem to ride A WHOLE LOT SMOOTHER than the metal wheels of the skates we had...back in the day.

When I was a kid, water was colorless, odorless, and tasteless! And delicious!

Also, penny candy cost ONE CENT each.

Battle of the Planets (G-Force), and Underdog were the best cartoons, with an honorable mention to Pink Panther, and Fred Flinstones, with babies Pebbles, and Bamm-Bamm.

You returned the empty soda bottles you found to the corner store for 3 cents and when you had a dime, you'd buy a soda, split it with your friends and play more ball, or ride bikes. Remember getting water out of a hose or sucking it out of a sprinkler head? No bottled water, unless it was the 5 gallon Sparklett's!

When I was a kid, there was such a thing as PENNY CANDY. Each piece cost only a cent!

Gasoline was less than a dollar.

You needed both hands to hold a Big Mac!

Vegetables were an important and celebrated part of the meal.

And, when I was a little kid, water had no taste...it was delicious.

I thought the reference to a 'secret handshake' for an online forum would make it clear I was joking. Sorry for the confusion. emoticon

Nearly all the sports we played were "pick up" games - didn't matter how many kids were there - we could play some form of the sport. In retrospect the best aspect was there were no adults around trying to "organize it" and thus screwing it all up - taking the fun out of it. :-)

This is still an interesting topic. I had a cousin that had hundreds of baseball cards. Very few in his nieghborhood did, but he collected them anyway. He loved the sport and was not trying to maintain the cards, but would use them to create dream teams. i would select cards for my team (from his collection) then he would select a team and we would then compare the two teams to see who had the best team. He always won.

I wrote an email to RHOOK20047 and asked what was flippers and this was his reply.

It was a game we played with like baseball cards where you would stand the cards against the wall and stand back 5-8 ft and sail your card to knock a card down. If you knock it down you get the pair of cards, if not the last person to get the last card down got all the cards on the ground. Was a silly game, but I got a lot of collector baseball cards that way.

It's curious, because I think all these nostalgic comments are by US citizens and yet they could all have been written by British people.
I'm 80 and my parents had no TV till I was eighteen, and I couldn't be bothered to watch it then.
I was out and about all the time and getting fat was never a problem, mum cooked a meal and I ate it, in between snacks didn't occur to me and using my pocket money to buy a burger (they didn't exist anyway) never happened, too busy saving for the second hand ice skates I wanted.
I could go on but suffice it to say that my wife and I raised our kids the same way, but their kids have such a different attitude, and vast amounts of money is spent taking them to dancing lessons, swimming lessons, ice skating lessons and it goes on, all of which I did, but paid for from the pocket money and eventually salary when I started work.
Whose fault is it…..I think it's trying to keep up with the Jones's, my parents encouraged me and praised me, but if I wanted to do something, then it was up to me to raise the cash and get to where ever it was happening by my own steam.
That's a very long comment and if you've managed to reach this far without falling asleep thank you

Can't forget penny candies, collecting empty soda bottles and returning them for the 3 cents and buying candy. Or if you got REALLY LUCKY, and found a gold mine of empty bottles you'd turn them all in, get an RC and maybe Twinkies, eat it up then take the bottle back for 3 cents worth of candy. And we didn't gain weight because we were always outside playing. "What, stay inside today? No way...Aw, Mom..." Ah yes, those were the days...

My 2 other siblings and I would take my twin size mattress and slide down the wooden stairs with it.

Yes I remember the party lines; the only phone in the kitchen where MOM could hear everything, playing a LOT more outside, until the street lights came on and that meant either dinner or get home! Also, when you got thirsty you sucked water out of a sprinkler head or used the garden hose. Bottled water? Unheard of, except for Sparkletts 5 gallon jugs for the house, which we didn't use. No bike helmets, and if you fell, you suffered in somewhat silence with your Mom scolding you for being reckless, not it being someone else's fault. Ah, those were the days...

Carpe Diem,
Dwayne

My grandmother had one of them and was so mad at the phone company when they forced her to change it to straight line in the 70's! I couldn't have lived that way, but it didn't bother her!

Most people were more active. As there was no internet, no video games, and we only had 3 TV channels on a black and white TV. People played more games and sports out side.
