Doc says not for me. (I've already probably consumed my lifetime quota so now I'm learning to drink sparkling water and be happy being skinnier and healthier.)

After a bad doctor's appointment where I was told my heart, lungs, kidney, and liver are all not well, I've come back to SparkPeople after ten years doing my own thing. I've now dropped 30 pounds in 3.5 months and my blood work and other tests are back into normal range. The doctor is pleased; he wants me to keep doing what I'm doing and check back in 4 months. I've kept adjusting my weight goal down as the pounds kept coming off; now to work on maintaining this weight.

Beer's fine. It's a "cheat day" food, but you don't have to lose weight drastically on a diet, and whatever *keeps* you on the diet is better than not dieting at all.

Alcohol is metabolized before other sources of fuel, so, if you know you're going to drink, then cut back on whatever else gives you calories.

October 2010 my wife and I are having breakfast in an Irish bar called Molly Malones Red Hook, St Thomas, VI. I'm thinking I'll get me a pint of guiness to go with my mushroom omelet. I said to my server I'd like a pint of guiness. "oh we only have bottles" No thank you. Then my wife says what's the difference? Difference is I'd drink a pint with my omelet but a bottle doesn't do anything for me. She had a tasty concoction. I like beer

Nothing redeemable at all, eh! Sounds dreadful.

I generally trust Trader Joe's house brands but strongly against one ever purchasing Simpler Times. Went to a wedding in Atlanta many years ago and there was a TJs across the street from the hotel. We purchased a couple of 12s for ~6 of us. Like you, we're not ones to leave a beer unfinished but we just couldn't do it. Awful stuff.

Worst beer I ever drank was called Indian beer and it was warm sitting out in a vegetable stand in San Juan PR and I'm gonna say it was 1973. I bought a six pack and my first sip sent my body into convulsions. It was at the higher end of warm and hot. OMG it was bad, bad flavor, bad temp. I took a second sip not as bad as the first, but still it's rot gut and I'm gonna finish it because I paid for it. 2 beers in I'm buzzed out of my mind I get up leave the beer on the pier and go back to my ship.

And yet beer is something to be enjoyed. A wonderful creation. So yeah, of all the unhealthy creations, bring it on.

Just make room for it within a healthy lifestyle.

Which is my issue. Trying to be healthier.

I feel the same way about depriving myself, but on the flip side of that coin are we depriving ourselves if we are dropping lbs and hindering that with roadblocks ie those west coast IPA's. I miss my beer but I am working on shedding so I'll miss it to a point.

I've been tossing down the Voodoo Rangers, Dogfish 60, Flying Dog and this chocolate Porter call Sweet Baby Jesus. Over a period of time and as I stated they mellow me out to the point of nap sometimes. I look at it I'm saving $12 a sixer every other day sometime less, sometime more. When I do have one now it's a 24 oz draft sometimes 2 and I savor them. Frye's Leap ~ Sebago Brewing

Today was NOT a no beer day for me. A fiver, actually, IPAs at that. Way over daily calorie goal. And yet, it was a good night out at the grill, with my dog by my side, grilling a burger for my son. Have a long hike planned for tomorrow morning. I think I'll be ok. Someone told me such nights trick my body into thinking no need to conserve fat (sub 1500 calorie days last two days). So I will go with that!

Two Ballast Point Fathoms, three Foothills (session IPAs) in case you were wondering. Cheers!

It's just so darn good. Definitely had a few today. However, I went on a two hour hike this morning - strenuous. Couldn't believe how many calories tracker said that burned so I searched other sites. Similar results. It's like marriage - built some equity!

it's insane the inner struggle I have with avoiding beer. I now look at it as sabotage to all the work I'm putting in. I was at a dinner theater and struggling with the fact that they have my favorite local micro brew Frye's leap. I ordered one and then a 2nd. The good news is no beer today.

Thanks, Cheivous. I appreciate you sharing the idea of doing and then moving on. I just know I need to do it less!

Did not drink while prepping dinner. Once in oven, chose 30 min walk with my daughter instead of popping a cap. Now in, table set, enjoying a nice golden ale. Probably avoided 1-2 more right there, still able to drink one now before supper. Baby steps ...

When I had my great weightloss 6 years ago, I was honest about my beer intake too. I don't drink as much as I did, life changes etc., but I just allow myself to have a day like that every now and then and move on. The weight loss affected my constitution so I drink less just based on that...

Welcome aboard man. This is the best thing out there. Be honest when tracking and you will make great strides.

So, I really enjoy beer. A good IPA kind of beer is great though any beer with friends will do. I enjoy wine and the occasional bourbon or scotch, but beer is my go to. On a Saturday, working out in the yard and then grilling some food, 6+ beers over a 5-6 hour period is not at all uncommon.

A typical M-Su beer/drink routine goes like this: nothing M/Tu, one Wed, two-three Thurs, 4 Fri after work, 6+ drinks over the course of the day Sat/Sun.

I joined SP on Sunday after yet another morning of hating my gut yet perfectly understanding why it was so. Five days in, just logging what I eat and exercising as I normally do, the difference in not drinking Sun-Wed is obvious. My body, like everyone else's, runs much better on lots of water.

And then last night, I enjoyed 3 200cal+ beers. No really, I enjoyed them!

At least my awareness is at a high point. I bet I will enjoy a couple tonight, but I won't have four. Same goes for this weekend. But of all the things one must give up/cut back on to lose weight (especially when 40+ yrs old), beer will be the toughest for me.

Beer. Surely I am not alone in believing in its joy producing powers?
