A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU who took the time to help me through my gloomy time!! I have recently turned over a new leaf on my health. I dropped a good amount of weight right before my vacation in February and for the most part I'm sticking to my goals. Yes, I do slip up, but I get right back on the horse again. I'm not dieting, I'm living a healthier lifestyle. I eat what I want, in moderation. I smile, I do not frown. I am very proud of who I am and where I came from. All the advice given on this feed has come in very helpful and all the kind words have been dully noted.

Depression is a very difficult thing to manage from time to time for me and maybe all the time for others. I want you all to know that I appreciate you!

Have a Blessed Day!!

I agree with the poster below. Log all your foods -- it's been determined that people lose more weight when they log everything they eat because it allows the person to focus on reality. Also, treat yourself to a new, pretty blank diary book, and on a daily basis, write about your feelings about yourself. This may help you focus on what the triggers are that makes you eat comfort foods. Always include a line or two about what accomplishments you made every day. Make a promise to yourself to pick a positive goal each day, and carry through with it. Your goals don't have to be big ones -- but they should be things that you usually don't do. For instance, walk outside for 15 minutes, stay below a certain amount of calories, drink a number of glasses of water, get a manicure, clean out your closet of all clothes that don't fit, make a meal plan for the next day, etc. There are a number of small achievable goals that you can make individual to you. There are many of us who have been there. With practice, every day, your journey to being more healthy will be easier and less depressing. Keep with us. There is a lot of support on this site.

Hi Wendy. I hope you're feeling better now. It's been about 4 months since your post. I'm 67 and I suffer with depression, too. It's a real life-sapper. When I get stuck in depression mode, I give my body and mind a few gifts. One is the gift of aerobic exercise (about 30 minutes of moderate effort, daily). The other is the gift of regular, healthful nutrition...3 square meals daily, even though I don't feel like eating. Some people react to depression by eating nonstop. This is a form of self-medicating (usually seeking comfort) and it's especially defeating for those who are overweight or obese.

The other important thing I do is to recognize that loving myself is my first job while on this earth. Caring for myself is one way to love myself. Addressing all the negative self-talk is another way. I remind myself that if I don't love myself, then I'm not able to love others the way they need to be loved.

Write down all the things about yourself that you like (or love). Do you hear well? Is your vision good? Do you notice nice things about others? Do you stop to smell those roses? Are you considerate and loving and kind? Do you really enjoy what you eat? Are you a giver? Do you like helping others? Are you a good speaker? Do you write well (your post tells me that you do!)? Write these positive affirmations all down and when you get into that negative self-talk jag, remind yourself that there are many things about yourself that are truly worthwhile. You see, we aren't just the sum of what we see in the mirror! Tell yourself that your physical appearance is just an indication that your health needs improvement and then take comfort because you're caring for yourself and loving yourself now.

Do you agree that we all love what we work for? Be willing to work for a healthier you! The more time you spend on this, the better you will feel...about life...about yourself...about your body...about others. Yes, it takes time and effort but you are worth every minute and every effort put into your journey. It's not too late. Start today. You'll be so glad that you did.

All things are possible.

Right there with you. I have lost and gained the same 10 lbs over and over. It's so discouraging. I am trying to avoid the negative self-talk and just focus on not letting one mistake completely undo my day.

Roller coaster is an understatement for me its the whole amusement park!!! I cant seem to keep it off for nothing. I have recognized I am an emotional eater, if I get pissed off I will eat without even being hungry. this stems from my childhood when grandma would make a cake, pie or pancakes to smooth the edges of my mom's tirade. I am trying this again in hopes to get it right if not I will revamp it again

I feel exactly the same way! I've always been a bit of roller coaster when it comes to healthy living, but I've always changed habits when things get out of control. The past couple years I haven't been able to do that. And I have so many amazing things to get ready for...I'm getting married next year and we want to have a baby right away. But nothing seems to truly motivate me. I don't know what's wrong with me. I'm trying to take SMALL STEPS right now to get back on track, but I could use a buddy if you'd like to connect!

I think time has taught me that the depression will lift & we will get through to the other side. I very much hope that this time I will not ever gain the pounds back again. We all deserve to be the best we can be!

All any of us can do is our best. We also need to love ourselves. That love is the greatest "motivation" and support. You have many here at SparkPeople who are all in the same boat, including me. Know that you can do this and we will be there to cheer you on.

you are not alone, we all have the highs and lows and there are so many factors honestly; seasons, rain, what happened around a day/week/month and all the feelings that go with it. A day at a time and breathe.

I'm in my forties and seem to have lost all the motivation of a healthy lifestyle. I've always in the past been able to jump on the "Healthy" Ban-Wagon whenever I started to spiral in the wrong direction. I have now found myself struggling day after day after day. I want to be the happy me again!

I have found myself miserable with the sight in the mirror everyday. I suffer from depression as it is, now I feel even less self worth. I want to stop this cycle I have found myself in, I just don't know where to start. There is no light at the end of the tunnel for me right now.

If anyone has the time to give me a little motivation and maybe a few pointers how to start again, I would truly appreciate it! I miss being a healthy, happy me.

Many Thanks in Advance to all who have time.
Wendy
