Everyone is doing what is best and works. I love veggies and fruit. I ate veggie one day and was so hungry the next morning I ate everything bad in the house. Paleo left me weak, tired, etc. I am a swimmer and need some starch.

I tried my coworker's intermittent fasting method. Eating dinner around 6 pm and nothing afterwards except cup of herbal tea until next morning and lost 3 lbs overnight. I eat protein, veggies and fruit for each meal. A low carb tortilla, pc of bread or lentil pasta once in a while. I am not a chip, cake, cookie, ice cream eater.

Apples, bananas, and carrots, are healthy foods. I just cant give them up. Especially, the apples. I have tired keto and ultimately gained weight with it. Still working on the last 5 pounds eating lower carb (around 150).

Like most of us here, I've tried every diet known. Low carb makes me sad - really, I think my brain needs the carbs and I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around higher fat intake.

I read all posts and noticed some like bread. I buy and eat low carb bread and tortillas. I am not much of a bread eater but love Mission low carb/high protein spinach tortillas. Mission makes plain and other flavors too. Sam's club sells a whole wheat low carb tortilla too.

I wish everyone luck on their weight loss journey.

I had gastric bypass surgery and low carb, high protein, no sugar or bad things happen (look up Dumping Syndrome) is how I lost 180+ pounds. My husband got cancer and a bunch of other major things happened and I took care of everything but myself and put back on 80 of those pounds over two years. Husband is as good as he's going to get right now, and the other stuff worked out as good as it's going to get, so I am back to taking care of me again. I've been doing the low carb, high protein thing again for two weeks and have lost 10 pounds. It does work, but exercise is key too.

Before you can commit to the future, you must come to terms with the past.
The only constant you will have in your life is your relationship with yourself.

Since 2011, I have lost over 50 lbs and kept it off with the diabetes diet. Lately I find myself losing inches but the scale is not moving. I tried low carb several times but I love bread so I cannot seem to stay with it.

Thank you for your thoughts! Low carb is difficult for a vegetarian:)

I lost over 70 pounds on a raw food diet in 2012-2013. Eating raw is easier if you live in So CA and love veggies and fruits. During this way of eating, I consistently exceeded1500 calories per day and, in fact, I was consuming more calories than ever. I never tracked carbs but I am sure the count would be over the top.

Moved to AZ in 2013 and 7 years later... I've gained back 40 pounds and 25 pounds in 2020. I am 63 years old so your words " Low carb is the only way I can lose weight at 78 years old. I can cut calories, but if my carbs are up, it doesn't give me any weight loss", sparked me.

Recently, I've been paying attention to cards and intermittent fasting per several recommendations. Never considered that I might be coming more sensitive to carbs as I get older.

Anyway, I will keep exploring how to maintain calories AND limit carbs while eating vegetarian and including healthy oils.

Cheers!

Nikki

Mission makes low carb tortillas with 3 carbs. I like the spinach type. I also use low carb bread although I don't eat either very much. I can't give up veggies and fruit. I need to eat lots of veggies and two fruits daily for regularity. I have new health ins that streams exercise videos and purchased an at home exercise device to use when my legs hurt too much to walk.

I've lost 120 lbs while doing as someone else mentioned the diabetes diet (I used the SPARKS guidelines which my Dr agrees with).

I do enjoy carbs, found out that watching my portions was the key. Of course everyone is different. I've found over the years that different things come and go, but the only thing that really lasts is being sensible on eating combined with exercise.

I lost 20 pounds from 2018-19 doing low carb. I was under a doctors care, and they monitored if I was in ketosis every week. I got off the keto diet after losing, but was able to keep the weight off, only gaining back 2 pounds in 2020. I weigh in at Doctor's office once a month now and I am trying to get back to less than 50 carbs per day in order to lose more weight, but it is very hard. Low carb is the only way I can lose weight at 78 years old. I can cut calories, but if my carbs are up, it doesn't give me any weight loss!

Hope this helps some of you newbies to keto.

I ate low carb 12 years ago to rid myself of diabetes and fit into smaller size for my daughter's wedding. I was younger and it worked. Doesn't work now. My thyroid doctor doesn't recommend low carb since it causes water loss which can lead to kidney stones, etc. I swim and low carbs makes me weak, etc. I have been eating protein, veggies, small carb and some fruit with each meal. Eating like this stopped me from nibbling in between meals and craving sweets. I lost a few pounds and feel good.

I usually eat 15-35 grams of carbs per a meal. I use the American Diabetes Association’s Choose Your Foods List for accurate portion sizes. I don’t go by food labels any more since some companies list double portion sizes as part of the 2,000 calorie diet. I wish they would revisit those recommendations.

I went low carb many years ago with excellent results. I've slid back into the carb world in the past few years and am thinking it's time to bite the bullet and return to the low carb world once more.

I’ve cut my carbs down to 30-40% from the 50% recommendation. I quit snacking and don’t consume white bread or sugar. My carbs come from natural foods, like fruit and vegetables. Very easy, and weight loss has been a result. Keto is too strict for me.

With all the changing diet advice, fad diets, and even doctors who can't agree, I have to kind of marvel at how simple weight management was in the 1940s.

A woman would notice she was 5-10 pounds up, and it was simply common sense back then that you cut back or cut out sweets and white foods until it came off. And they'd just manage their weight on the fly, maintaining within about a 10-pound range. I read a couple of years ago that Betty White has done this all her life.

Now, the advice is driven by money, and has gotten ridiculously complicated. We follow fads, we yo-yo to extremes, we wreck our metabolisms and deprive our bodies of nutrients because we're just lost.

Reducing sugar and high-glycemic carbs made sense back then, and it's good to see some of that common sense returning.

I'm back to low carb after about 1.5 years of not. I did 1 year of keto and lost those last annoying 20 pounds that are so difficult, had a bad year of personal stuff where I didn't pay attention to my eating habits but still generally ate healthy and a year of just settling back into my life and now back at it and needing to lose those 20 pounds again. I am not strictly keto but I tend to keep net carbs under 50g and feel better for it. No afternoon lethargy, I wake up more alert, I don't feel hungry because of blood sugar highs/lows. Just have to get past the initial slump as your body burns off the carb stores it has which can be tough

Keto WOE since February 1 2017.

I haven't been serious about low carb for a long time, but when I did, I was able to lose weight. My biggest problem is sweets. I can get by without bread, but I need to work on sweets and processed foods. The sweets are also bad for my hypothyroidism. Sometimes with that, I almost feel like giving up, but I know it is difficult but not impossible.

Wow I am so glad I found this board. Just today I was thinking about going low carb or at least cutting back. Just because I was looking back at what I was eating(lots of Texas Roadhouse Roll, Hawaiian Rolls, crackers of all kind). Just not good so as I walked around the grocery store today I said to myself NO MORE!

Yes...I've lost 100 lbs over the years and have another 100 to go. The most success I have is with low carbs, little of processed foods. When I am on track I eat meat, veggies and fruit. That is when the weight just seems to fall off with no problem. I don't have the constant hunger that I have when eating sugars and carbs. Good luck! You can do this!

Once you decide for yourself to stop eating anything with sugar in it or that turns to sugar like starchy vegetables, bread, pasta, rice, etc. It's really pretty easy and if you can stick with it for a week you start feeling so much better and the weight starts coming down. That's when your Blood Sugar and all your labs get better and better.

It's a great feeling and you want to tell everyone that you have found the secret to losing weight and getting Healthier. emoticon

Hello Ms. Bobbie Walker,

I have published your lab results on to your portal.

I wanted to congratulate you on the enormous success demonstrated by these labs. You are no longer showing any evidence of diabetes, elevated liver enzymes, or elevated triglycerides.

Your electrolytes, kidney function, and blood count also looked great. Your thyroid is in control.

Your cholesterol is still elevated however the majority of this is usually due to genetics. Please keep up your success and do not revert back to the diet that caused all the problems we identified earlier.

Please review the labs and let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Dr. Tarpley

My comments:
Now, in my golden years, I just want to stay healthy. I have been learning a lot from Dr. Eric Berg's videos and doing Ketosis and Intermittent Fasting lifestyle since Sat.,10/26/19.

I stopped using All SUGAR including foods that turn to sugar in my body, like all breads, potatoes, pastas, rice and anything with white or wheat flour in it etc.

Once I made up my mind to do Keto I went to my kitchen and through away my bread, potatoes, rice, pasta and anything that was high in carbs.
(I could do this because it's just my husband and me). Don't worry I kept the things he really likes and he's fine with it.

It works for a while, especially when one is initially beginning the weightloss process, but it's difficult to keep up long term. For me, I genuinely love seasonal fruits, which are overall very good for me (though not necessarily for everyone). Also, I enjoy walking and dancing. Cutting way back on carbs always makes me very lethargic.

I do, though, get the carbs in do eat in their natural form-- whole veggies and whole fruit, and stay away from breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, as much as possible.

Be caring, patient, gentle, compassionate and loving whenever possible, and never forget to extend those qualities to yourself.

“I'm an OPTAVIA fan myself. Addresses full lifestyle-for-life changes and, ultimately, ultrahealth. Dr. Andersen is a cardio surgeon, and got tired of fixing people, only to see them run off to (name your fast food facility) the minute they are out of surgery. He decided that he would rather get to people at home before getting to people on the surgeon's table. You can order Habits of Health from Amazon, or go to OPTAVIA.com. Love it!”

So, I pay somebody to tell me to lay off the Big Macs and fries? Then, I pay for supplements that substitute for a proper varied diet?

3 years of keto now. I went keto based on some preliminary research that points that it could help prevent alzheimers after taking care of my dad until his passing. I used to say that if they proved that it did not help with alzheimers I would head straight to the bakery... but down 65 pounds, blood pressure and triglycerides way down, arthritis GONE, no more afternoon naps, great energy and no brain fog.

I just got back on sparkpeople to help me lose the last 30 pounds but I know I can do it with keto if I track what I eat and move more. :) The first 65 pounds were easy.

I am on day 12 of a 21 day sugar detox. I am surprised that I have not cheated. I am down 14 pounds and do not feel deprived. I plan on continuing this in a modified version. If I want a treat I will eat it, just a small amount and not as often

I also agree with Keto/Low Carb. I've been on it for 13 months and maintaining a 20-25 pound gradual loss.

Highly recommend it. My Dr suggested it years ago and was thrilled with results.... my numbers are great. His advice is to keep on doing what I'm doing because it looks good on me!

Woohoo! Check out the Keto groups here on SP

I lost a lot of weight on LCHF, under 20 g of carbs.. about 120 lbs.. in the past 8 years, I followed it enough to stay off my diabetes meds, but I gained weight back, and the past several years, I have hovered from 260-290, which is better, but at 5'6", I could easily be 160, so 260, sounds better than 360, but I am halfway there, and still morbidly obese.

At the end of summer, I joined a keto page, here on SP.. 8/25 was my start date.. going from LC, with cheats 2-4 meals a week... to keto, and actually upping fat, and dropping protein. I was eating 160-180 g of protein, and now eat 60-80 g, and I feel less bloated.

My fat went very high.. over 200 g a day, and my calories are over 2000 every day now.. 2200 is my goal, but some days, I go over by a few hundred calories.

I was not really thinking of this as weight loss, although I was aware I was losing, and at times quickly. I went back to look at my start post, and that is 124 days as of today, and I didn't remember my (re ) start weight, but it was 289.. at the end of a large binge. So my initial weight loss was water weight, and I never thought of it as being as impressive as the 120 lbs. I lost in a year. Back then, I counted it..lol.

I am down 51.2 overall.. even if some is water weight, it's pretty good. I would say it was a success.. more importantly, I feel better.. more energy, and not bloated.

Both diets are low carb, and I have had success twice, but keto is much easier to follow. In 124 days, I had 1 cheat meal. Consistency matters, because when you cheat, aches, and lethargy return immediately, and you stop exercising.. if this happens twice a week, you rarely feel great, even if you are losing weight.

LC didn't have enough guidance for me.. stay below 20 g of carbs.. so I ate a lot of meat, and eggs. Still eat the eggs, but only the yolks. The meat is now cut from 2 lbs. a day, to 12 ozs. at most. With few carbs, you have fat and protein.. but LC left that up to the dieter, and we have all been told that fat is bad for decades.. so I ate fowl, and occasionally red meat or fish, thinking it was good protein

The lean to high fat was reduced, because of all we heard about fat being bad. We would only go so far.. if you eat 5% carbs.. and then stop at 60% fat, because that is as far as you dare to go ( double the RDA!! ).. you are stuck with 35% protein. At 2000 calories, that is 700 calories, or 175 grams.. that is a LOT of meat and eggs! More, if you get protein from less concentrated forms of proteins.

Keto limited protein, and the result was very high fat in my diet.. they steered me to fat, and away from tons of protein, and the result has been amazing, particularly in how I feel. I am back at the gym 4 days a week, and walk all the time now.

I would recommend keto, over LC without direction.. details matter, and just eating anything with fat and protein in it, is pretty vague, and can lead to pitfalls.

I'm doing Keto and tracking what I eat daily and it has really helped. I use a lot of the receipts that can be found on Pinterest. They have receipts for bread, waffles, all types of sweets and even chips. It has really helped me.

A good article on the different ways different types of carbs (sugars, starches, fibers) act in and on our bodily systems, and while not specifically touting low carb, it does legitimize minimizing sugars and starches in favor of whole grains, limited carbs, and putting insulin-spiking items at the end of the meal to help limit their impact.

Using Grey Sheet in Greysheeters Anonymous. No grains, only vegetables (no starchy vegetables like corn or potatoes), proteins, and four tbsp fat a day. Love it. Absolutely love it. Cravings are gone. I feel great. The support is so nice. I lost 20 lbs. in 45 days. I only weigh the first of each month, so I'll see what it is December 1st.

I was eating fast food and cokes as my main source of food for years. Then in June I started a low carb, "Keto" diet. The results have been great. I have lost 60 pounds and am starting to go back to the gym and expect to lose another 75.

I bought a small erasable board to put on my fridge to track my carbs. I found it real easy to keep track this way and have stayed between 20-40 grams. I did away with all sugary drinks and now drink water or flavored sparkling water. I have also found that there are many keto foods that can help keep the carbs down.

I feel the diet helps me to stay motivated, and I cannot complain about the results. Find what works for you and stick with it.

Just a few months ago I was still saying "I love carbs too much to go on Keto." and "Carbs make life worth living"

But I knew I had to do something, and my husband was enthusiastic about intermittent fasting. He was starting to edge into prediabetes. So to support him, I drastically cut carbs, increased healthy fats, and eliminated sugar altogether.

The first weeks were rough. I was dizzy, lightheaded, and wondered if this would worth it. The hardest part was eliminating snacks. I used to have morning and afternoon snacks every day.

Within a few weeks, I transformed my diet and went from 5 meals a day to two meals a day. I feel great. I've lost 40 pounds and can do so much more than I could when I was heavier.

Carbs aren't worth it. Do I still like the idea of a King's Hawaiian roll or a piece of cake? Sure! But I'm training my body to be less and less attracted to foods that are too sweet.

I think the most important thing is to read a lot, watch a lot of videos, and design a program that works for you. Not everybody has the same preferences, the same nutritional needs, the same caloric needs. People can get really judgmental about are you doing it "right" or are you eating enough, or are you eating too much. Find what works for you and stick to it.
