Good luck in your quest. I just joined. I am 232lbs. in a 5'10 kind of athletic body. However, since i am now retired I have a fairly large cattle herd and am on a horse 4-6 hours about 5 days a week. My horses are begging me to loose weight. I need to drop 32 pounds before spring time when things get really busy.

Hello and Blessings to everyone.
My name is Jasmine. I'm 33 married & mother to 2 (A 2 year old and a 12 almost 13 year old). I've been on and off spark since I discovered this site almost 2 years ago.
I decided that this time I'm making everyone in the house follow along with me. I feel we should all work on achieving a healthier lifestyle.
I look forward to getting involved & being active with the team as staying motivated is my biggest problem. emoticon

New to team but not new to SP...will be 3 years the end of this month. I'll be 65 in April, and have been on BP meds for 15 years. Just started cholesterol meds last year. Blood labs 12/22/09 showed all numbers normal except triglycerides borderline high at 187.

I had gone inactive on SP, but last summer dr. discovered I needed triple bypass surgery (no heart damage, just badly clogged arteries). Following the surgery on 9/11/09, I have become more attentive to the need for some major overhaul in my eating and exercise habits.

My major stumbling stones are: overly fond of high- fat sweets and salty foods, inconsistency in planning meals and executing the plan, and the stress of raising an angry 13yo DGD who targets me with the anger she feels for her mother. We have had her for almost 9 years. She was beaten by mom's BF when she was very small. I tend to eat mindlessly when stressed.

BUT I CAN overcome all this. My health and quality of life is worth the effort.

I've been taking Lipitor to lower my cholesterol, and that dropped my total cholesterol from about 240 to about 195. My triglycerides were always high and my HDL wasn't that great. Then I started to lose weight. After losing only 12 pounds, my total cholesterol dropped to 134 and my triglycerides dropped to 140. I've lost a total of 25 pounds now and I can't wait to see what my new numbers will be. I hope to get off the Lipitor by the time I reach my goal weight.

I joined this team because I have recently thru menopause. Menopause left me with 22 extra pounds. I never had a weight problem suddenly I inherited the menopot! Also always had low cholesterol 130-140 range. My last blood work showed 212. However my triglicerides were ok and my HDL 62. So I am working to lose about 25 pounds and get my cholesterol down. I want to take care of this before I need drugs.

I've spent the past 48 hours reading everything here as well as articles based on sound research online. We're living in times when a lot of thinking is changing. Fortunately, my health insurance covers naturopathy, so I'll be seeing my ND next week to plan how to deal with this. For now, I'm concentrating on taking off 50 pounds with exercise and a mostly plant-based diet, including lots of oatbran, barley and healthy fats.

Best wishes!

Hi, my name is Bruce I have joined this group because well, all of the men in my family have had issues with cholesterol (my father has had a heart attack and a mild stroke, grandfather the same + a pacemaker, etc)and after thinking I didn't have to worry as I am only 27 my family doctor has now enlightened me to the fact that I have the cholesterol of an unhealthy 65 year old. I look forward to getting this under control.

Hi, my name is Theresa and I have been told since 2000 I have high cholesterol. It runs in my family but thankfully heart issues don't. I do want to lower it though. I had it screened 9 years ago and it was 236. I had it screened 2 years ago and it was the same. I wasn't making any changes in lifestyle during this time. Now I am a new vegetarian and I am looking for other ideas on how to lower it. I take fish oil and excersise, but other ideas I am way open to hearing. After about 4-6 months I want to have it re-screened. Thanks for your help and support. To learn more about me feel free to visit my page. emoticon

Hello everyone. I am not new to SparkPeople but I have never used it to its full capabilities. I am starting again and with new purpose. My cholesterol is 283. Both my parents have high cholesterol and have had strokes, etc. I don't want to end up like them. I am allergic to statins....so I need to do this with diet and exercise. I felt that SP was a good place to start.

Hi everyone, I realized that I haven't been on SP for awhile since I have such a busy schedule but I need to quit making excuses and exercise (walk in place) in between my sit-down homework times. I have no excuse except for no motivation. It is costing me my health as I have now developed high cholesterol. That is why I'm back. One thing after another and I'll be 50 next month so time is not on my time.

I continue to work and attend college fulltime, participate at church in a few ministries and attempt to get my homework finished and fit in some sort of exercise (which I haven't honestly done so recently). Then trying to fit time in with the grandkids too! I need better time management and a premade menu plan that is in front of me constantly.

If anyone has this kind of busy schedule, please help me with what is working for you.

Finally, brethren,
whatever is true,
whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

Hello. I've been on SP for a while but I still haven't gotten the exercise bug. I'm not over weight but I could stand to lose a few pounds and tone up my sagging muscles. I read the articles and once in awhile check into my teams. I just saw my doctor and was told my cholesterol is high and I need to cut back,or stop, the ice cream and cheese and get my LDL down before my next appointment,in May,so I don't have to go on the meds for it,which I certainly hope I don't have to do.

I also have high blood pressure which is genetic.

I guess I'm here to finally get my act together and hopefully be healthier as I get older instead of every year finding something else is wrong with me.

I know the people on this site are so supportive of each other and I simply need all the motivation I can get. I know I don't need a heart attack or stroke to get a wake up call but I sit around and waste time instead of doing a bit of exercise each day. That has got to change!

Hi everyone, I just joined this team, but have been on SparkPeople for a while. I'm also a member of the Fighting Fibromyalga team, the Challenged by Arthritis team and the Spark Bookworms team.

My cholesterol as always been managed by statins. However, the last two drugs, Vytorin and Simvastatin caused me to have terrible muscle pain in my left calf. Muscle pain already comes with fibromyalgia, so my doctor told me to quit taking the statins.

Now I'm on my own, fighting the high cholesterol (nearly 300). I know what I'm "supposed" to do, but find it difficult. My arthritic knees prevent me from walking too far, although I try to walk my dog for 20 minutes each day. I'm also a bit overweight and am trying to lose ten pounds.

Any hints or help I can get from this team will be appreciated.

P.S. Tim, the South Beach Diet is great. I get on it every so often when I'm totally out of control. There's a website called the southbeach-diet-plan which tells much of the same stuff.

Hi everybody! I am new to SP and am hoping I can find someone to chat with in a similar situation as me. Here goes: i am 5'4", 125lbs, 26 years old, vegetarian (but I do eat fish and take fish oil everyday), eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, active (I ran a marathon last year) but my cholesterol is still high. As of July it was 264! My husband and I are going to try to have a baby next year. Because of this and the fact that I am too young, I can't go on any medication (I would prefer natural methods anyways) So, I am trying to lose a few pounds, tone up, and lately have become obsessed with cholesterol lowering foods. Anyone else get stuck with crappy cholesterol due to genetics?

Hi, I'm new to this group, and just started Sparking again ~ 4 weeks ago. Had a minor heart scare a few weeks ago that prompted a Nuc. Stress Test and overall Physical. My LDLs & Trigs were ok (Total Chol of 180), but my HDLs were low at 30. Got cleared for exercise 7 days ago and am hitting it hard. Doc wanted to put me on statins, but I'm going diet & exercise first to try - 1,500-1,800 cal/day, less than 16 sat fat/day. Have added these to my diet: 2 Tbsp Ground Flax, 1 Tbsp Psyllium Husk (Metamucil), Plant Sterols, 1/4 cup almonds or macadamia nuts, and 1/2 oz. of 85% dark chocolate/day. Also added 500mg of Niacin to the diet, luckily didn't experience any of the hot flashes I read about. Next chol. check is in mid-January, and hoping that diet and exercise will do the trick.

Hello everyone, new to group. I want to love a better life and I need to change my cholesterol. I hope to learn everything I can and in my research share what I do learn with others in hopes of helping someone somewhere live a little longer with those they love.

Hello! I am Holly and I am new to Sparkpeople as of 12/4. I have always been heavy, but due to some personal issues (and extreme overeating as a result), I have gotten to almost 300 pounds, and my cholesterol is going up and up. I have joined looking for support and encouragement and plan to start a stricter diet and exercise routine.

Hi people. I'm Brittany. I've been with SparkPeople for a while, but never actually used it until now. I have horrible cholesterol, but it goes hand in hand with my extremely horrible triglycerides. My tg's are almost off the charts. It's a combination of bad genetics and a crappy diet. With the help of SP, I'm going to be on a strict diet (very little wiggle room), and an exercise regimen. Hopefully, I can lower my cholesterol and tg's without the use of drugs (they've tried it before and they just made me sick). emoticon So yeah, again, hi :)

Hi everyone. I'm not so new to Spark, but I am relatively new to this team. A recent blood panel and a fortuitous MRI have shown high cholesterol numbers and a number of benign cysts on my liver, which effectively eliminate my ability to use statin drugs. Anything I do to reduce the cholesterol numbers must be through natural means.... Diet and exercise and any supplements that might give me an advantage. I am wondering if anyone has any experience with the South Beach diet. The book has several testimonials that claim astounding reductions in Cholesterol numbers in a very short time. i.e., going from over 300 to 100 in 60 days. Seems unbelievable, but even if it is partly true, it might be worth a try. I'd appreciate any feedback.

Tim

Hello,
I'm here to get information to help my husband. While my cholestoral is healthy, his is not, which is strange since he's not overweight for his age and height. His father did die from hypertension (my husband's blood pressure is usually on the low side), but his father could also have had high cholestoral too and not known it (they're from a West African country where they didn't have the regular doctors' visits that we do here).
So that is why I've joined this team. The added benefit is that the information will help me to keep mine healthy.
Thanks for having this team available.

Hi, my name is Darla and I live in southern Indiana. I have had problems with my cholesterol since I was in my 20s. I took Lipitor for several years but stopped this year when my liver enzymes went up. My cholesterol went up to 280s so I said I would try diet and fish oil for a couple months to see if that helped. I lost 15 lbs and took fish oil daily and my cholesterol went up to 306 and LDL went up so I am back on Lipitor 10mg again. Will get repeat blood test in Dec. I am hoping the numbers have gone down and the the liver enzymes stay down. I also take Methotrexate 1 x a week for sarcoidosis so that also effects my liver tests. I stopped the Lipitor after adjusting the Methotrexate dose didn't help the liver enzymes but after stopping the Lipitor they went down. We'll see what happens next month.

Good morning! I'm fairly new to Spark People but I'm loving it so far! :o) I joined this team to help support my hubby who has problems with high cholesterol and high triglycerides. He loves all the good foods that aren't so good for you :o) I'm concerned about the medications out there and am looking for ways to change his diet without making him feel like he's giving up all the good stuff! I look forward to being a part of this team! :o)

I just started using Crestor. My cholesterol was 244 and my doctor also said exercise and diet alone would not help. I have only been taking the Crestor for two weeks. It will be interesting to see if it has helped when I go back to the doctor in a few weeks. I've been more proactive about what I stuff in my mouth since then but it is hard to give up the shrimp!

Heya! I decided to have my cholesterol checked because all my younger siblings are already on Meds for High Cholesterol. Mine was 279....sadly I have the lowest in the family and I'm only 32. The youngest sister is 23 and has been on meds since she was a teenager. They started me on Crestor. He said that because of my family history even with diet and exercise mine will more than likely need help. I go back in December to redo bloodwork and see if it has gone down any.

Looking forward to participating in this team!

Hi, I have heredity cholesterol problems. When I was 18, fit, healthy and active my cholesterol was over 200. Because I know it's high, I have not had it checked in many many years! I don't want to add another medication to my day so I would like to get it down to a civil level!!
Any advise, I would welcome it!

Hi, I am joining this because I am 54 and had to have a 99% blockage in my carotid artery cleared 6 weeks ago. I did not have high cholesterol.

I just came from my annual physical and the doc wants me to go on statins. I want to try to do it naturally - lose weight, proper eating and exercise. It looks like you all have some good ideas.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and support,
LALA

Hello everyone. I am a 62 year-old grandmother who is active and within my correct weight range but have high cholesterol. I am attempting to eat correctly, but due to working outside the home at a preschool, and in the home caring for a 9 year old after school, then working in the Children's ministry at my church, I find it difficult to keep on the beam. Any suggestions?

New to the group and to having High Cholestrol... I'm also a new work from home mom so am having issues with time management. How to fit in a workout amongst diaper changes, cleaning house and running a business--not to mention eating right and having severe hypothryroidism. I hope to learn a lot from the boards so that I can get healthy again!

I am new to the team and have a question. I started taken simvastin three months ago. My cholestrol is still a little high but now my blood sugar has increased which was never an issue before. Have any of you had this issue? I am now on a low carb diet and return in 3 months for follow up.

Hello everyone! My name is Tiffany and I'm 25 years old and a mother to a gorgeous 5 year old little girl. I live in Ottawa, ON, Canada and have been here since I was 12.

My Dr. told me last year that my cholesterol is high and I've not really done anything to change it. I started spark people last week to help lose some weight and tone up a bit and I've been very diligent with my food tracking and I have not had any problems staying within my calorie range but every time I run my report at the end of the day my cholesterol is always higher than it should be. I need help finding foods to substitute and I don't know where the cholesterol is even coming from! I don't understand cholesterol very well and I thought i was eating super healthy this past week!

Hi LaurieKellogg. My primary doc tried to put me on statins awhile ago. However, I went to Lipitor's website where it said to try weight loss and exercise first. So I told my doc that I was going to do that and she basically said, "Whatever, we'll recheck in 6 months and can start Lipitor then if it hasn't come down." Docs hear a lot of people say they'll exercise and lose weight but very few actually follow through with their plans. I did lose weight and my numbers dropped.

But then I got careless and I regained some of the weight and my cholesterol rose again. However, I'm back on the straight and narrow now and have dropped about 20lbs. My total cholesterol dropped from 254 in Dec08 to 209 in Oct09. I'm not done yet and hope to see my total cholesterol below 200 for the first time in decades when I reach my goal weight.

Good luck on your goals!

Hi everyone. Just new to the team thing and am not sure what I'm doing. This looked like a good team to get involved with. I really need to lose about 20 pounds and get my Triglycerides under control. Last blood test they were still at 343 - a long ways from where they should be. I'm hoping to find some good tips and advise to help me out.

Hi! I just got my health risk assessment results back last week. 2 years ago my cholesterol was 201, last year it was 213, this year its 232. I keep telling myself that it's not really THAT high and then Sunday night my 45 year old brother had 2 heart attacks and ended up in the ER. He had a 90% blockage, which was ballooned and a stint put it.

After some discussion, we come to realize this was his 4th and 5th heart attacks in a 5 week period (he blamed the earlier episodes on indigestion).

So, long story short...I REALLY don't want to end up wtih heart disease or blocked arteries at the very young age of 45. I am already insulin resistant and have hashimotos thyroiditis. I eat healthy 'most' of the time and I exercise regularly. I either walk or jog almost every day. Heart disease runs in my family and I just think its time to get my numbers under control.

Suggestions? Advice?

Hi my name is Michelle and I am from central OK. I just turned 40 and a couple of months ago I went to the doc for stomach pains so he did blood work etc. That is when I learned that my cholesterol level was 280ish. Didn't really suprise me, when I got out of the Navy 20 yrs ago my exit physical showed I had a level of 260ish. I was young and just didn't care at that time. You know we are bullet proof at that age. This time it scared me. Time to do something about it.

Hi, I'm George and I'm working to improve my total cholesterol number. My triglycerides and HDL numbers are fine but LDL is a little high. So I've joined my wife on her quest to drop a few pounds that have accumulated over the years. She's looking to drop some dress sizes and I hope to drop my LDL and total cholesterol numbers.
