Hi, all...

Am getting back on track with a healthy eating program, and then will be adding exercise in to the plan. I am trying to keep on the middle road so I don't burn out and give up (which I have done in the past). So, here's to everyone's success on the journey... emoticon

I have been here at SP since May 17. 2010. I started early in year at 333, down to 265 as of today. I never say diet. Diets are for losing a few pounds. They start a diet,,pounds lost, the diet ends. Then usually you are back on the diet or one similar in a short time. For the weight has reappeared. No one wants to live life on a diet. We want to eat regular food. To do that we have to chose quality foods, the right quanity of food and
combine with exercise, we lose weight. Sound familar? The difference in going on a "diet" and changing what and how much we eat is, we will use this plan for life. So there is a start but no end. So no restrictions, no depriving one of normal food. That does not mean you can indulge in all the fat, sweet foods there are. It means that once you can manage a few bites, a small measured portion the forbidden foods is OK.
But it might take a little time to learn that and trust yourself around those foods. So far I have not limited any thing but baked goods. Even the cake you can buy by the slice, its too big for me.
I don't know if I can only eat part and put the rest away till later. So for now its fresh fruit, lots of fruit. Some low calorie, no sugar ice cream products. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Welcome newbies, and welcome back to those who are returning. I have been down this road a few times also. I've been back at it a month now, and I am feeling really good about it. I am losing slower that a turtles pace but that's OK, my health is improving and the scale is going in the right direction.

Hi, I'm both new and old. I joined SP several years ago, did pretty well, thought I didn't need it anymore and could do it on my own.I was wrong! My weight crept back up. When I went to sign in, I couldn't & had to rejoin. So here I am, ready to work and stay with the program. I need to get to a truly healthy weight and fitness level. I know it will take at least a year. First step on the journey.....taken.

Hi RTFROMIL - - I'm new today, too. I was scared to get on the scales too. Sick at heart. I am 'way, 'way, 'way over a healthy weight - - have never been so terribly, miserably heavy. But I figured that if the number was really, really high (oh, it was, it was!), then at least in the beginning, I should be able to drop some pounds relatively quickly. You know, a long road ahead, but my mission is clear and hopefully the first few pounds will come off fairly quickly if I follow my plan. The number I saw was horrific - - but I am optimistic that I can make some encouraging progress soon.

And you know what? After one day, I'm feeling better already!

I know what you mean. Taking measurements was really hard for me too because before my health issues I was in a size 8! I try to think of this as a lifestyle change to get healthier and certainly not as a diet and that helps. I really believe before anything can help, we need to really love ourselves first. I know you can do this and holler if you need anything---there are a lot of good people here to help.

I was scared to step on the scales this morning to find my BMI. I have never in my life weighed this much.

Welcome to the team! I'm new from Ohio too and will weigh in on Monday after four days following the program and really stopping some really bad habits. I'm a little nervous, but whatever the result committed to this process and I know you'll get the support you need from this team.

Welcome other newbies. Nice to know I am in good company. I have a fair amount of computer experience but still am learning how to use the site. I have found the the help button on the top of the page is a good resource. Or just trying out different things. What's the worse thing that can happen? Maybe it will kick me out, or not go where I want it to: well if that happens I just start over. I'll figure it out eventually and usually learn a few things in the process.

Also, if you haven't found it already, there is a great discussion thread on this teams forum called 'one pound at a time' I find that discussion very helpful to me as I struggle day to day with being more healthy.

Nonuknees, I too have to sign in all the time, must be normal. Glad you joined. This is my 4th day and I too am struggleing. Someone left pizza on the counter and I ate a piece! It put me over my calorie goal for the day. Normally I would have called it quits but I havent. even though I ate the pizza, I still have eaten healthier and exercised more in the last four days then I have in a long time. Not perfect but trying. Hang in there. WE CAN DO IT emoticon

Reading about other "new" SP makes me feel less intimidated by all the technology. About the only "techy" thing I've managed so far is comment on other people's comments! ALso did manage to enter my food intake for the day and was excited to see I still have several hundred calories left ... and it's almost bedtime! Yea! My first night of using SP to avoid those troublesome nighttime urges has been VERY encouraging. Thank you all!

Hi everyone!

I'm in Texas, where I'm teaching full time & working on my dissertation (any questions about the level of exercise I've been getting for the past handful of years?!) I joined Spark yesterday finally after having followed my husband's plan & getting myself used to working out.

I was hesitant to commit, I think, knowing what it will take, and despite the obvious benefits. But I can do the elliptical training (up to 45 minutes 6x per week!) and I'm already exercising portion control. One step at a time!

Hi, I joined SP back in 2008. I didn't last long. I just came back @ 2 weeks ago at my lifetime high weight. Does that behavior sound familiar to anyone? I am hoping I can make better choices this time around, and keep up my motivation. I have been checking out the different teams and really like this one. I look forward to getting to know you all better.

Hello, I'm in the great state of Ohio and I have tried so many times to loose and NOT gain the weight back. I joined Spark...over a year ago, but didn't continue to use it and was not able to motivate myself alone. I'm 60 now and retired, but work a part-time job. I use to walk everyday (even did a marathon in 2001), but got out of the habit since retiring, and as you probaby have guessed...all the weight I lost came back, plus some. I have promised myself to use the SparkTeam & information this time to help me lose the 75 pounds gained. Pls help me. Sometimes I think why try to lose the weight now...at this age and then realize that I still have a life to live and a family that loves me. Thank you. emoticon

Hi fellow team mates! I've been doing SP for 1 week. I have to say it's the best "coach" I've ever had! I am thrilled that I read about SP and joined up with a "team". SP has helped me get on track with a healthier lifestyle! This first week as been an eyeopener for me! I thought I knew alot about nutrition, because I took many home economics courses, but I'm learning something new every day about health and wonderful tips to help me with my new life! Thank YOU all!

Hi from Dayton, OH!

I just joined about a week ago. I'm still getting used to all of the "bells and whistles" on this site.

I have about 50 or so lbs to lose. I'm only 4'9" so....
I sure don't need to be carrying all of this weight around.
I've been trying to go for a walk everyday (at least a half an hour-sometimes more).
I want to try out one the walking/bike paths here in Dayton but don't really want to go by myself. My son says I walk to slow and so he doesn't really want to go with me. Ah well. I may convince him yet! emoticon
Anyway-I'm 57 and I have two grown children. My son who I mentioned still lives with me and I also have a daughter who is married. She and her hubby live downtown.

Welcome newbies.....You are here and conscious of your weight so that is half the battle and you want to change. Keep strong we will hit plateaus and gains but as long as we can access and refocus we can do this. Plus with the support of those around us it will help. Good Luck!

You can do it. Just have to take one step at a time. It's ok to have the foods we like and the fact that you were aware of three is a good start. Next time think of it and it will be two or one and then maybe none. This is a great place for support I have never been involved in such a caring group. Keep a positive attitude and check in often for support and attitude adjustments emoticon Keep at it.

I'm Judy, 50 years young, divorced mom of 3--23, 18 & 15 and need to lose about 55 lbs. Seems like a very overwhelming #!! My 18 year old was recently tagged as pre-diabetic and with high cholesterol. My other 2 offspring (can't really call them children anymore - 23 & 15 years old!) don't have these issues yet, but we all sat down to discuss the fact that we need to change our eating habits. We eat out too much and I am always needing something I can throw together fast for dinner. We're working on better planning and less complaining about eating fruit instead of cookies, veggies instead of mac n cheese, etc. It is a challenge so far and we are up and down, but at least the seeds have been planted! Made the 18 year old join too, though getting him to track may take more energy than I have! Will take all the encouragement and suggs I can get so forward ho

Hi all, thanks for your messages. I finally found the little weight graph (didn't scroll down far enough)I'm doing good so far (it just doesn't show yet!) and have more energy. Easier to get up the hils on my way to work(which is a built in mile walk right there!) Keep the messages coming. It's encouraging.

Have you filled out the weigh-in portion of the site? I don't know if you need a Spark page or not. It does show at the bottom of your Spark page too. emoticon
Then it will show at the bottom any messages you write.

Hey there! I grew up in Cleveland Hts, went to school in Shaker Hts. Raised my children in Chardon and now live in Bethlehem. (West Bank, not PA) I'm still trying to figure out how to post those little weight charts at the bottom of your messages? Can anyone enlighten me?

I sure would as I also need a buddy to talk with during this change in my life. I used to live up near Lake Erie until about 6 months ago, when I moved back home. Home is about 2 hours south of Cleveland. I am sorry I was so slow in answering, but I am still trying to figure everthing out about the site. Thanks for asking and Have a Great Day!!!!!

Hi BRIGHT551! I need a buddy to talk to while I am doing this and getting my self into a healthier mode!
Are you interested?

I live in rural Ohio, about 15 miles inland from Lake Erie.

I do a lot of gardening, I'm a gourd artist, and I love to read. I am married to a wonderful man who is in a nursing home-have been married nearly 37 years. No children, just a dachshund, Zach!

Came in from gardening for a short break, we have tornado watch up again!! Have to run for now.

Hi! I am new and from Ohio too! I need to get some support as I once AGAIN battle this weight! I have ordered the Spark book and it should be here the end of the week but I am starting my journey today using my old WW books. I have got to do something.
Background, I love to paint gourds, I love to garden - flowers mostly, I grow gourds too, a few veg -not like I used to. I am married (36 yrs) my husband is disabled and in a nursing home. I have spent 19 yrs caring for him and now I really need to care for myself! Hope to make some friends and give and get some support. Thanks. emoticon
