HI Folks - First post for me. I'm Sarah and alcohol is definitely getting in the way of my weight loss. I almost made it through the day yesterday AF. Then at the end of the night, I decided to have a drink with my husband. Well, I never have just one! Feeling bad about myself today, but will strive to make this day AF.

Sarah

Hope I'm posting this right.

I can do this.

Hi Angie emoticon

I think this team is reasonably active, particularly if you look at the challenge threads. Some folks here have put in some very impressive strings of AF (alcohol free) days and moderate drinking days.
I just found the group a few days ago myself and it's been helpful to me already.

We can do this!

Hi! Iím Angie. I know a lot of these groups are not so active (maybe people are embarrassed of the stigma that comes from saying that drinks are their dietsí downfall?), but hopefully I can add to the fun on this one  Iím not embarrassed at all to say that I used to drink A LOT. Iíve been cutting down little by little & have been doing pretty well, but I think itís still the thing thatís keeping my little hooch pooch stationary, so Iíd like to cut it out as much as I can. This weekend is my first attempt at moderate or no drinking in a while (weekends are usually where itís all over for me. LOL. ) Iím planning not to drink tonight. Tomorrow I have a friendís engagement party to attend & decided that if there is a champagne toast, Iíll have one glass, but after that, itís clean & clear until further notice. I donít want to restrict myself too much & make myself nuts, but Iím studying to become a personal trainer & Iíve really got to get at it when it comes to getting fit. Also, too much booze just makes me feel crappy & depressed anyway. Cheers to cutting back!

Wow, really glad to find this team. I have known that I need to cut back for a while, but the SP daily reports have been even more of an eye opener -- almost every day I have more calories in wine than any other one food. My typical consumption is three glasses of wine a night. I would like to dial it back to one -- but it is almost easier to have none than stop at one.

Can someone tell me about the abbreviations?
AF = alcohol free, yes?
Mod = moderate ?

What does DD mean?

Is there a program or book or something that inspires this team? I've read a few. This is not the first time I have tried to moderate my drinking. It is the first time that I feel like the booze is the number 1 factor keeping me from weight loss.

I am so glad to find this team. I've been drinking more than is good for me, lately, and my waistline is starting to show it! It's my goal that I can be alcohol free most days of the week and enjoy one or two drinks (be it beer or wine) the other ones. I don't want to give up alcohol altogether but really want to quell some of the bad habits I've adopted lately.

We moved from Portland, OR, to San Diego last July. I'm sure some of the drinking is emotional; by that I mean I'm using it to feel better when I miss my hometown, my friends, or feel upset or lonely because I haven't found friends here yet. Some of it's habitual, like when my husband and I sit down to watch TV - we'll usually grab a beer or open a bottle of wine. And usually if we open a bottle of wine . . . it's finished the same night.

I have been on sparkpeople for 9 months now and just updated my goals. One of them is to cut down on the booze. The 4 reasons why I want to do this is : 1. Too feel good and energized 2. Spend less to pay back my student debt faster. 3. Get more productive stuff done everyday 4. Cut down on the empty calories.

I am aiming for at least 4 alcohol free days a week and moderate drinking on the others. I know it will be a challenge. My boyfriend brews his own beer at our home so that is quite a temptation. I normally have a glass of wine or 2 every weeknights with an occasional AF night and on the weekend it goes over 3 drinks most nights.

Hello all, I am 2 weeks into my "new lifestyle" and have been trying to incorporate a small but important goal each week. I have been wanting to cut down my alcohol calories, so I think this is the week :) I am glad this team is here, and looking forward to posting how it goes :)

Hi everyone! Glad I found this team. I did spend quite a few months with little to no drinking last year, late winter, spring and early summer and it made a huge difference in my weight loss. Then in the summer, my little to no became little to more, the bad habits crept back into my life. I hit the plateau in the fall, I did manage to cut back a little in November and December which helped me not gain back pounds, but I really need to get back to the little to no alcohol. Just keep it to special occasions or once every few weeks would be my goal.

I'll have to read some of the posts to see how people are tracking this and any tips they may have.

Hi, I'm Barbara! I've been a member of SparkPeople for ages, but have never really taken advantage of all the great stuff here.

My New Year's resolution was to take one day at a time and make good decisions about my health. One decision I want to make on a regular basis - at least Sunday through Thursday - is to skip that glass of wine (or three) with dinner. I know these extra calories are a huge factor in the fact that I've put on 10-plus pounds per year for the last four years, so it's time to reverse the trend.

Good luck to everyone - hope to hear from you soon!

You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human."

Hello Everyone! This is my 2nd week at SparkPeople, and what I know is that my alcohol calories are going to slow down my goal achievement AND that they are empty calories even though at times I fool myself into thinking of them as fruit calories emoticon

I would like to be AF at home and enjoy alcohol at special times and social occasions.

I have perfect healthful and productive weeks -healthy eater, run four days a week, kick butt at work, loyal sparker and then I go and blow it on the weekends - I am back to my partygirl ways and I know this is undoing all the good I do during the week.

What's a partygirl to do?? I am feeling a bit defeated.
I am looking forward to reading your thoughts an trials and tribulations - if any one wants to brain storm to overcome indulgence - friend me.

Hey, ya'll! Well, I've been sparking for almost a year now, and the good news is I quit smoking six months ago. The bad news is that I packed on 15 pounds ON TOP of the 15 I wanted to lose. That totals up to 30 pounds. I KNOW I need to quit drinking so much freaking wine, I KNOW that is one of my biggest caloric expenditures, and I KNOW I could kick-start my weight loss if I at least cut down a bit. So, here I am, hat in hand, ready and willing to read, digest, and be motivated by those who have walked in my shoes. Help me, help me!

Hello, new friends!
Happy I found you. I completely quit drinking for almost a year, and the pounds flew off! Then my life got super stressful again... and I returned to my bad habits. Well, as you can guess, the fat came right back. I'm SO frustrated, and angry with myself now. Just yesterday, for example, my hubby and I were given the (rare!) opportunity for a date night. We got a sitter and planned for dinner in town and a play after. I had ONE martini to unwind and get ready... which led to another... which led to a glass of wine... and finally sake at the Japanese restaurant! I didn't get drunk or anything like that, but I seriously drank TOO MUCH-- which is NOT good for my health-- AND I packed on the calories!!! I didn't intend to overdo it... but... well, you know how it goes sometimes! emoticon
I have simply GOT to find some alternative, *healthful* ways to soothe my nerves and relax. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. God bless! emoticon

Hi, my name is Pam and this is my second time starting on SparkPeople. I've been working hard to make lifestyle changes over the last month: I quit smoking, started exercising several days a week, and stopped binge eating. Alcohol consumption for me has always been an issue, I've never really been able to get it under control. Over the last couple of months it's started bothering me a lot more because I'm really getting sick and tired of embarrassing myself in front of other people or not remembering what I did the night before. I don't want to live like this anymore; I want to feel in control of this again. I'm also really trying to lose a lot of weight, and like the team name says, by cutting down the booze I can cut down the calories. I probably need more support for this habit than any other change, so hopefully I'm in the right place!

Hi, I'm Holly. I've been making this lifestyle change for over a year now, I've been doing pretty good about being AF during the week, but could always use more support. I really try to be AF at least 6 days a week. Looking forward to being a part of this team.

I try to have 1-2 AF days a week. Sometimes when you have that goal, it's easier to obtain.

Hi everyone, I'm happy that I found this team yesterday. I am looking to cut back on the amount of wine (or beer) I enjoy in my evenings. If for no other, I want to reduce the number of calories I take in each day. I am looking for ideas to help me keep to 2 (or less) drinks a night, and also to make more spark friends that share the same goals.

Hello everyone. I am very glad I found this team. I am originally from Ireland so there is the first problem with drinking :) I have always drank to excess which is something to be proud of over there. I worry about my drinking as while I don't drink every day, when I do it is always too much. I suffer from the "drinkers blues" the next day and beat myself up. I would like to be able to drink 3 drinks and leave it at that. I have challenged myself before with this and am always proud when I accomplish the goal. However, after a few weeks, I binge and the cycle begins again. My husband likes to drink too but doesn't dwell on it like I do. He doesn't think I have a problem. I would like to start being accountable so I am really liking these boards. I would also like to meet some like minded buddies. Thanks for listening!

Hi! I'm so glad I found this team. A large part of my weight gain is due to alcohol. I know I could lose more and more easily if I gave it up. I can't just have a drink and be happy. I have to guzzle all of a bottle, or 6 pack..I lost almost 30lbs a few years ago and almost gave up drinking completely, just had a little bit when I did..but somehow I slipped back into old habits. And now I have almost 50lbs I want to get rid of. Like today I didn't accomplish nearly what I planned to because I had a generally crappy feeling from drinking too much yesterday. I don't always drink..it's just that when I do, it's hard to stop. It's good to know i'm not alone!!

Welcome to the team, all you new folks! :D

This really is the best team I belong to...everyone here is super supportive and there is absolutely no judgement here at all. We're all a friendly bunch of people who are just trying to get a handle on our drinking. Some are trying to go completely Alcohol Free (AF) while others (myself included) are trying to learning how to moderate (MOD) our drinking.

Jump into the threads, post questions, ask for support, give advice. Looking forward to hearing from you all! :D

Hi Everyone....This is the first time that I will be admitting to myself that I really have a problem with alcohol. My main issue is not being able to stop when I do drink. Last night...prime example. Bought a bottle of wine and swore that I would only have one glass and then proceeded to drink the entire bottle. And yes...today woke up with the intent of going to the gym, but feel too much like crap to do that. I know that the alcohol has become an issue over the past years. I am sure that I killed my last relationship with my drinking. I know that I can go without drinking for several days. I tend to binge drink...which is probably worse since I am beginning to not remember things after a night of drinking. I know that my weight has been affected and I have put on 10 pounds from it. Nothing like scarfing down crap after you've been drinking. I am definitely looking for support and advice from this group. Happy to have found this. Anne Marie

Hey everyone! So, when I turned 21 I was in a bar EVERY Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night for probably about 6 months or so....and gained 40 pounds. I have continued to gain. I am 25 now, and while my drinking is *more* under control, it's still.....present. A lot. I love drinking, actually, but I have realized that there is NO WAY I am going to lose weight if I continue to have a lot of alcohol in my life. I will not, however, quit. I am looking to decrease. I (just) made a contract with myself, and I hope I can stick to it. With the contract, and this group, I am hoping I can cut back on the alcohol and shed those pounds!!!
My contract:
If I drink MORE than two times per month
OR
If I drink, on average, more than 3 drinks per hour, while I am somewhere I can not sleep at that night,
THEN
I will consult with my therapist and seek assistance (AA?) in decreasing my alcohol consumption.

Hi hi I'm here I'm new I'm nervous! Hi!

Okay. That's out of the way. I'm from the U.S. but I'm living overseas. There's a LOT to do in the city I live in, but there is also a LOT of partying to do. I have never been terribly good at resisting this. But it's freaking do-or-die weight-loss time, and all the good-looking guys with cute accents should definitely be more appealing than six beers, two shots, and a hangover that keeps me in a dark room til five pm the next day, yeah? YEAH.

Of course it's not really (all) about men. It's mostly about getting control of my weight and my health and the fact that I work with kids (I'm an ESL teacher) is even more motivation to cut way back on the shenanigans. NOT that I'd ever go to work under the influence, but like, what if I got drunk, fell into the river, bonked my head, etc etc worst case scenario... my poor kiddos.

Anyway, I'm rambly. That's enough for now. I'm just saying, like, I hope I can keep my party pants folded neatly in the drawer for now, only to be put on for special occasions and maybe someday torched altogether (but let's not get ahead of ourselves....)

Cheers (with lemon seltzer, I mean...)!

Mel

Hi. I just joined this group a couple days ago. I am hoping to get control again to where i'm having a glass of wine maybe 1x/week and a couple on the weekends. This winter was when I got into a bad habit of having 1-3 drinks/night. Summer is hard to regain that balance because it's all about beer and BBQ which I love! lol
I know it's put a lot of weight on me that i've lost, among other things. Love the idea of this group, thanks for listening :)

Hi everyone,

I just joined the team cause I need to learn to drink less because of new medication and to lose these last few pounds. I've been reading your posts for a while and they have been very helpful. I think I'm ready to join in. It looks like a very supportive team!

Hi guys, my name is Cat. I'm 27 and I live in NYC and work in the film industry, which is a really obnoxious industry to work in and PART of the reason I've always drank so much. No joke. 16 hour days, 5-6 days a week? Please. I have always had somewhat of a drinking problem though, and it started in college. I would say I've been a borderline alcoholic for 8 or 9 years, if not a full fledged one. Back in college I read this book Eat To Live, which explained the nutritional science behind a raw vegan/veg diet, and I lost a lot of weight on that. Then I stopped, gained some weight back, and now I'm back on it.

I went back on the raw diet a couple weeks ago and have lost almost 10 lbs (main setback is that on set I have to eat what I'm given, which is almost never healthy), and I've found that this time, after about a week, I literally lost all desire for alcohol. And it's crazy because literally right up until the minute I started eating raw again, I was plowing through a 6 pack a night several times a week. And then suddenly I didn't want it anymore, and I made no effort to feel that way. It's really weird, and I hope it lasts, because drinking really sucks.

Hi everyone!
I stumbled across this team and thought it was fantastic for non judgmental support. I am having great success at weight loss, even with drinking! I know this will change, though, so I'm trying to prepare myself for when I need to cut down or eliminate it from my life. I'm going to post a new topic on my particular situation... I could use some advice!

Hey
Just new to this. I have been a heavy drinker for many years.Have tried just cutting back but didn't work ...was always going to be something I did tomorrow .. or the next day ..or the one after that.
Drinking has had a big affect on me weight wise, money wise and relationship wise. Weight wise - I know how to diet. I love walking. Can lose weight fairly easily IF I stop drinking!!! Have not been able to get coobination right for ages. Now slowly the weight is falling off.
I read somewhere that stopping for 30 days allows your body to readjust so .. I am now on day 11!!! To be honest it has been easier than I thought. Yesterday was actually the first day I craved a beer but think only because I had been out in the garden all day and actually did a lot of physical work.
I am determined to make it to 30 .. and then reevaluate after that. I would love to be the person that can just have one on a hot day. Just one!!!

I joined this team to help me stay on track.

I successfully gave up alcohol (and refined sugar) for Lent but after Easter began to drink daily again, though in moderation. So what's the problem? I got grumpy if I didn't get my glass of wine or whatever. I stopped losing weight as easily. When I'm not drinking I lose almost without effort and still consuming 1800 calories a day. I'm only three pounds from goal, but if I want long-term maintenance success, I'll need to deal with this.

So I need to re-evaluate my whole approach to alcohol now. I've been alcohol-free now since last Sunday (day 8 today).

One motivator that's helped is having a race tomorrow (half-marathon). So now I'm wondering how I'll do without that carrot in front of me.

Maybe this group can help. Do you have a challenge or team goal or other system for accountability set up? Have others found that they experience something similar that even maintaining the calorie range, losing weight more easily when not drinking?

Thanks for being there!

hiya all....introducing myself. I'm not sure if I have or not. Alcohol was becoming and everyday thing. I would grab a bottle of wine on the way home from work and enjoy drinking it. i would look forward to getting home and relaxing with it each night. it was a gradual thing. I was going through some stuff, like we all are, and using it to feel better. Its been 34 days since I had a drink. Its part of my healthy eating programme. Low/no carbs, no caffeine, junk food of any kind etc. I have survived it :) Im on a low cal diet. I don't know if I would call myself an alcoholic but it want healthy. I drank for the wrong reasons, on my own and far too much. It is something I need to get under control. I have been to a few party's recently and it hasn't been a big deal not to drink. it was really just a bad habit and a rut I was in. Anyway hope you are all having your own success each day :) X!

Do not wait; the time will never be just right

emoticon emoticon to the team!

we recently just had a tread about what else to drink and there was a link to mock cocktails. Works great when you want a small taste but not the alcohol or if you don't want the comments on why you are not drinking. Hopefully someone will post it again for you.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Carrie and I have just joined this team today! I have been thinking about cutting down on my "drinking" for a while now and I think this team can help me. I am basically a weekend drinker but that is getting real old to me and I want to find different things to do besides drink. Most of my family member's drink and it seems like the thing to do when we all get together. I am looking for a team that doesn't judge me, gives me different idea's on what to do besides go to the alcohol and support. In return I will do the same for all of you!

Carrie
