I was involved in OA in college, and I'm looking for people who get the emotional aspects associated with overeating, shame and bingeing. It's definitely a complication with weight loss and mood management in general.

Hello my name is Cindy and a compulsive overeater. I joined OA a year a go and have grown so much but I still struggle with food choices. I am just looking to connect with other OA peoples and continue on my journey.

Hi my name is Jen. Have wanted to join OEA for a long time but too scared to join the meetings. I have struggled with food addiction, binge eating, emotional eating for my entire life. I just want to lose weight once and for all and not have food control my life

Welcome Mrs Potato Head!

This group varies in being active. However, I am always on the board and happy to support you in anyway I can.

I have released 100lbs and maintained it for over a year. More importantly, I have gained a connection with my Higher power, self-esteem, freedom from food obsession, anxiety and depression. I have gained good sleeping with no food-hang-overs. I go out on fun adventures, The ability to tie my shoes without getting out of breathe or dizzy.

Hello! I'm not new to Spark, but am new to OA. I've looked at it several times, but never took that first step. Spark has always been there and worked for me, but no matter what, I seem like I see some success but after a time I relapse and go right back to overeating. Every time I gain more weight back and I'm now finding myself at my highest weight and my body is struggling with the weight I carry. My knees are wearing out, my back hurts, my posture is impossible, and GERD keeps me up at night. I'm hoping to find some people that can encourage my first steps and know where I'm coming from. I hope I've found an active team.

Welcome Diane!

I too find it difficult to make in person meetings dues to my work schedule. Have you tried the phone (my preference) and/or online meetings? They are a great source if you don't have a meeting near you. They can be found on OA.org.

Please reach out to me if I can be any support.

Hello. I'm Diane. I have only been to 2 OE meetings (both face-to-face.) Unfortunately, because I work full time, neither of them may be a good fit for me. In terms of being able to participate consistently, I know I will do better trying to find a weekend meeting. I live in San Diego. Do I have any neighbors here/

Hi I am Tanya, This is my first time admitting my food habit could be an addiction. Recently I started thinking differently. This is from a recent blog I wrote.
The problem is real. I can not walk past a sweet without digging in. I no longer have a bedside hospital job. I have moved to a desk. I did however spend about 10 years at the bedside. We did a Cage screening to look for potential addiction to alcohol upon admission. I am good on the alcohol, but if you substitute food or sugar, I am off the scale.
These are the basic questions:
Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?
Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?[
Now change the word drinking to eating. I am off the scale.
I do feel the need to cut back on food, but feel helpless. The pull to fill up on more food is greater then my strength to avoid.
I get annoyed when others critique my intake at mealtime. I can hear myself saying,"it is none of you business if I am going up for a 3rd plate."
The guilt . Oh yes, how many times have I said, "I really should not have done that."
The eye opener, Yes, a food hangover is real. How often do I say, "a sausage biscuit will give me the pick up I need."
Where do I go from here? I am not even sure where to start. Can someone recommend educational and reading materials?

Tanya

Hello everyone! My name is Stephanie, and I used to attend OA face-to-face meetings a few years ago, but the group disbanded, and now the closest one to me is 80 miles away. One of my goals for this year is to attend the OA meetings online at least twice a week. I look forward to getting to know all of you.

I am Amy and I am a compulsive overeater and have been most of my life. I am having trouble kicking the sugar habit and I know I need to get serious about this. It seem like when I have tried to give up sugar I go for something else. I just don't know what to do and would love to hear any tips or advice.
Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Good Evening,
My name is Suzanne, and I am not just an overeater, but in recovery from food addiction. Admitting that I have a problem with food was a major step forward for me. I was in denial for about 6 years. My recent physical and lab work was a definite wake up call. I started the first of December and have been making positive choices. The Doctor also wanted me off caffeine. At least the caffeine withdrawal headache is lessening. I am looking forward to getting involved with the group. emoticon

Hello, my name is JPISME and I'm an over eater.

I have decided to leave the group.
I have found that I am not participating much.
I will probably join again later but for now I wish you all the best.

Hello, my name is JPISME and I'm an over eater.

I've been to a few local face to face meetings over the past year but struggle to get to them due to distance or day/time if meetings.

I've been with SparkPeople for many years (previously as peanutsmom96). I decided to change my name to focus more on me. I think it is helping to hold myself accountable rather than blame /make excuses.

I'm excited to be a part of this group as I have been with every face to face group.

Wishing you a happy and healthy day :0)

I am no expert on OA but suggest you may want to start making small baby steps to try to change things instead of thinking you need to do it all at once.

For example, I was in the habit of eating crackers and cheese or sour cream at night. One of the team leaders suggested I have a fresh fruit instead. It really helped me. It satisfied my craving without triggering me to want more food, like with the salty crackers.

Glad u r here! emoticon

Hello everyone,
My nickname is Carmel and I am giving OA another try. It helped me years ago but after the friend who introduced me to OA passed away , I slowly drifted away. I've been overweight since I was 12 and have fought off and on for sobriety. I am now 67 and morbidly obese. I believe I am ready to fight for my sobriety. So glad this team is here to help me stay focused. Thanks so much.

Hi! I have recently been diagnosed with Anorexia and Binge eating disorders. I've struggled with eating disorders since I was a kid. It started out as purging and then moved into anorexia and binge eating. I haven't purged since 2010. I'm doing really good with that. The other stuff, not so much. My therapist is sending me to a nutritionist on June 5th. I hope that we can start getting to the bottom of this.

Hello, I am new to the team. I did OA years ago. I like online support, and discovered this team. Glad to be here. I will check out the OA page, too.

I used to binge all day, every day. Therapy helped me with issues that made me binge all the time.

I now have much smaller binges, usually on carbs. Now, that I am diabetic, I don't need these smaller, once in a while binges. I am only hurting myself when I eat too many carbs. I average 70 to 125 net carbs per day. If I do my daily intermittent fasting of 14 -15 hours a day, then my blood glucose is great! I have been slipping and eating at night again. My blood glucose shows it, too.

I want to live life well, as well as I can, at least. I have chronic conditions that place limits on my activity. I can still do PT in bed, and want to get back to a regular routine of that.

Welcome Home MINDFULSPARK!

This disease of compulsive eating is a secret for many of us. For me I would never eat in front of others how I would alone. At 270 lbs I swore I didn't eat a lot- after almost a year in program 80 lbs released- I see how well I lied to myself and others

The OA program follows the AA 12 steps, that you take at your pace. All food programs and individual binge foods are person specific. Religion is a personal choice, we do not adhere to or force religion on anyone.

I encourage you to check out OA.org, attend some meetings, be involved on the team board. Reach out to members. You are NOT alone we are here for each other.

Hello. My name is Tammy N. I am a compulsive overeater. I have 20 days abstinent today. I am looking for a way to become accountable with someone in this team with my food. I am working the steps with my sponsor but really need a food sponsor. Does anyone on here do that?

Hi Becca,

Thank you for sharing your inspiring story with the team. I found that changing wasn't as horrible as my addiction told me it would be. I'm so grateful to have a connection with my HP.

Hello, I'm Becca. I first joined OA in 1993. I've been in and out, mostly in, all these years. I used to wonder why I could go to any OA state convention any year and see so many of the same faces. Once a food addict, always a food addict. OA is the only thing that works for me and so many others. Over the years, the addiction has indeed progressed as they say it does. Thankfully, that doesn't mean abstinence is less likely for me. It only means I have had to modify my program over the years to keep that addiction asleep. Whereas when I first came in, 301 was just fine for me, eventually I needed more structure in my food plan (weighing and measuring), and I needed to adopt a plan that is low on starches and eliminates wheat flour (I use CEA right now). Funny how a person can resist those changes for years and once made, it is really no big deal. Food is really no big deal. My thoughts are gloriously free of food obsessions. Life remains, and a more enjoyable hopeful life it is.

I am so glad there are many ways to work the tools now. I can do an online meeting when I get a free hour (which is not so frequently with my work schedule and kids). I can check in here. I can use a Youtube video to meditate. I can hear an OA podcast. I was able to look up all kinds of information on OA, food plans used by those in OA, and members' stories. I have come to accept that I need to do what works for me, and not feel bad if it isn't the way some others work their programs. If I am abstinent, it is enough.

Hi there,

My name is Tammy and I'm definitely a compulsive overeater. I've dieted for years, joined Weight Watchers dozens of times, been on hundreds of diets over the years, and still cannot get a handle on staying healthy and within a decent weight range (currently around 75lbs.overweight). Last year through WW I lost 40 lbs. but quickly found them again plus some. I've joined via the phone, various compulsive overeater sites from OA to FA and more. I've tried to be strict and count calories, points, fat grams, carbs, etc. but nothing has been a cure. I've decided to join a face to face OA meeting in my town and have been to a hand full of them and will go to one tonight. I guess the most important thing to me is not giving up no matter how discouraging it is. My mother died many years ago as an obese woman and lived her life in shame for as long as I can remember. Some of her final words to me were "Don't ever let yourself get like this, it's no way to live". Unfortunately I see so much of myself in her (weight struggles)and it scares me to death. I will be 60 next March and I hope and pray that I will find solutions to this lifelong struggle I'm a part of. I'm about to go on a trip to France on a river cruise that has daily walking tours that will be a struggle for me. I have a torn meniscus (knee injury) which I'm sure would be easier if I weren't carrying so much weight. The only thing that I ever saw relieve me of my food compulsion or at least help, was giving up sugar (I did it for one month). Perhaps that's one approach I will try again once I return from my trip. Anyway, I joined SP many years ago but it, like other approaches, fell by the wayside. However, it's good to be back, it's good to have another OA support, and even though I am saddened by feeling imprisoned by my addiction, I feel hopeful that I'm writing to all of you and have not given up. I'm not sure what approach to take but I'm starting with in person meetings, online support, and lots of prayers. Thanks.

Hello! I joined the team a few months ago but didn't stick to Sparking and am back again. I'm a newbie in using the 12 steps, but have issues with overeating and codependency and I have a ton of wonderful books to work through. I think this team fleshes out the steps wonderfully and am glad of the support it offers. I may be reading and learning more than posting. Thanks.

Love,

Helen

Hey everyone, I'm Gail. I just joined the group today (4/2/2018). I've been with spark for 7 years, during those time I was a active drinking, yes I'm alcoholic. and Now I realize that I'm compulsive eater and an over eater and I'm looking to break the cycle. I obsess over food, think about food. I'm known to hide eating food so others do not judge me, etc. I am currently back at 270 pounds, i have lost weight in the past i got down to 225 pounds, however, I was also drinking at that time. and I realistically need to be around 160, so I've got about 110 pounds to lose.

Hi -- new to posting and tried to reply privately but couldn't.... wanted to mention that I find the primary purpose OA meetings by phone really welcoming and friendly. I could certainly use a 'buddy' and am looking specificly for someone where we could do a food plan accountability check in..... just a thought. anyhow ... wishing you the best with finding good support. Should you wish would be happy to share the several small meetings I've found that feel supportive.

Hey everyone, I'm Christina. I just joined the group today (3/8/2018). I've been with spark for years, but I'm really digging down to find out why I am not successful in my weight loss. I've realized recently that I am an compulsive eater and an over eater and I'm looking to break the cycle. I obsess over food, think about food and beat myself up for food constantly. I'm known to hide eating food so others do not judge me, etc. I am currently 250 pounds and I realistically need to be around 160, so I've got about 100 pounds to lose.

Hi, I'm new to this specific SP group and was a member of a journaling OA group in the mid 1990's when I was living in Little Rock, AR. I've never been able to find a similar group in Wichita and the OA website kinda leaves something to be desired, so far as trying to find things.
So... I need to figure this out...get HP involved in my life again... find a deaf-friendly sponsor... that sort of thing.

Hi all, wow, looking over the messages here I could certainly relate to everyone. I've been here over the years and back and forth .... its been hard to stay consistent. So now am doing OA - have a sponsoring person... using the phone meetings - but am still first step. Its a relief to have realized that I'm powerless! Finally get it.

So I'm doing mostly a primary purpose group and would LOVE to have a daily 'plan of eating' check in and thought it would be so nice if I could do it all in one place -- so decided to look here... imagine OA at Sparkpeople!

My basic ideal plan is to have 3 light meals daily and 2 lite snacks allowed -- mediteranean diet -- emphasis on fruits veggies and plant based ...

I'd love to hear more from anyone who does a daily food check in and how that works for you, or if there are any folks here doing that kind of sponsorship. And to those of you just holding down the fort here! -- THANKS for your service, its a great thought. : )

HI team

I'll try this again since I haven't seen where else to post.

There are no OA meetings locally that I can get to. I feel alone in my program. No one else I know "speaks OA" so I have recovery but no fellowship. Online meetings have not been very good in my experience. I'm still open to some kind of connection but I'm pretty alone with my recovery. I've decided that my HP has to be my BFF.

If anyone is looking for a buddy, I sure could use an OA friend.

Hi Everyone!

I am newly involved with OA, looking for additional support aside from F2F meetings. I badly need knee replacements, but my surgeon won't because my BMI is too high. Over the past year and a half, I've lost 67 pounds, mostly by swimming and eating more carefully. I got into a cycle of more and more pain along with more complications as my body tried to compensate for my unstable knees.

I just got out of a week in the hospital and 3 weeks of rehab, because the degeneration in my lower spine is getting dangerously bad (if I fall, I could become paralyzed) caused severe pain and I was falling more.
Now I am stronger, working on getting a different surgeon and very motivated to continue my weight loss, which really involves addressing the issues that have caused me to carry a lot of weight all my adult life.

REALLY glad to find OA here!!! Looking forward to meeting you all!

Peace!
Kim

Good morning my name is Ceil. I am struggling to get started AGAIN....I am pushing past the resistence and taking baby steps to get started. I have been preparing a food plan for a couple of days and following it. I have been looking through any remenants of losing weight tools around the house. I picked up an OA book yesterday and started to read. Looking for companions and success stories.. Thank you

SKRIBBLEZ - welcome to the Team! Thank you for your share about what is happening with you. As the Big Book tells us, this disease is self-will run riot. But if you are willing to go to any lengths, then recovery is possible for you, as it has been in your other 12 Step programs.

Do you have face to face meetings in your city/town?

Consider attending at least 6, if they are available to you.

If not, may I suggest oa.org for some podcasts, online meetings, or phone meetings?

I hope your Higher Power leads you to recovery.
