Hi everyone My name is marcy. I started this team last year. I only stuck with sp for one week. I'm back and look forward to meeting new people. I love to garden and plant flowers. It is getting very hot so I don't spend as much time outside as I would like.

Hello, my name is Peggy and I enjoy gardening. I live in the high desert of Oregon so it is a challenge at times because we can get frost anytime of the year. The love of gardening outweighs the struggles with the altitude and weather though.
Hope to learn much from the gardening team while working out in the garden and losing weight.

Hi everyone! I'm Annette and I live in NE IA, almost MN. My family and I moved from a big city in SW FL 5 years ago to a tiny town of about 500 people. Talk about culture shock! But we wouldn't change it for the world. We have always tried to eat healthy, but now live a very healthy lifestyle with an enormous organic garden, a wonderful barter system w/ the Amish neighbors for fresh eggs and meat, and practically live outside in the spring and summer.

Happy I found you, thanks to Sparks. I'm Helen, live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, where we have the weather to contend with. My peonies are just starting to bud. My garden needs lots of attention and hopefully I'll be able to give it some this summer. I'm married, we have our own business, and are somewhat retired!

Hello my name is Rachel, i'm new to this and still exploring this site, this is my first year to have a flower garden, i started some of my flowers from seed that i had purchased from ebay, and some i had purchased from a plant nursery. Out of all the plants i have collected, the most prized to me is the plumeria plant, a very interesting and beautiful plant. I'm very excited about joining this site to loose weight and have people to talk to about my interests.

Today marks the beginning of my third week using SparkPeople.com. I like it a lot. I have been working in the yard and gardening a lot since May 9 when we spread 6 yards of garden soil into a deep depression in the front yard. We planted a Japanese Maple there that I brought back to New Orleans from Atlanta in my car! The new tree and soil fill the void caused when Katrina took out my oak tree. I have been getting all the back yard beds in shape. Hard freezes took so much this past winter - unusual for New Orleans. I am replacing pentas, coral nymph salvia, pink vinca, heather and dark gold lantana. I started one new garden bed with another Japanese Maple and two varieties of day lilies. That one is done and mulched!

My name is Leith (Scottish, if you're wondering). I am new to SparkPeople but not new to gardening! I live in Calgary Alberta Canada. We still had snow about 3 weeks ago, so I only recently planted my flowers. I am also planning to experiment with Square Foot Gardening this summer for growing vegetables. My boyfriend is very helpful in lifting heavy bags of compost and manufacturing planter boxes. I know that being active in my garden is an important step in achieving my weight loss goals. I am looking for a buddy who might be interested in gardening and pretty big long term weight loss (I need to loose about 100 lbs). Please message me if you're interested!

Paths are for journeys, not destinations.

Hi, I'm Dotti (without the "e", please!). Spent about two hours in garden today before getting rained out. Planted my "taters", (reminds me of the song by Rose Maddox "I Love Fried Potatoes"), dug up about twenty feet or so of dirt, turning it over,...The early spring tilling is fast growing grass and other weeds...back to lots of shoveling. Wish I had one of those small personal tillers...on my list for when I have money (never do). I live with my husband, Gary. Binky the cat shares her house with us, and tolerates the love of our lives, BriAnna,...some people think she's a toy pomenian but we happen to insist that she is our baby, even Binky knows so. They both insist on all the attention in the house so Gary and I hardly get any. Not much of the marriage bed either because both Binky and BriAnna insist on sleeping down the middle between Papa and I. And they refuse to be moved. WE, meaning Gary and I, have to pay for a Motel just to have a little now and then without the nosey bedhogs. So goes our lives in the Northwest.
I, also, have three grown adult-children and one grand-daughter. Loving life, trying to live past one hundred and four, and do that without pain or much discomfort. Was invited to Sparkspeople by Auburn Joan and I have enjoyed it ever since.

"Peace is healthy for children and all others Living." The first priority of all who live well ought to be Peace on Earth.

Hi. I'm new. I planted my first garden just in the past couple weeks. It has grown legs. I put in what I wanted to and then Mother and a Daughter had suggestions....I've been investigating animal and insect control and am amazed at the natural remedies. There are so many...I wish there was just ONE organic/natural thing to spray on my garden to keep pests away. My name is Ann. HELLO!

My name is Jon ever since I started on sparkpeople I've been cooking a lot more for myself. Ever since I began shopping at Wegmans I've been eating more produce; now I'm ready to take this to the next step and grow my own. My mother knows quite a bit about gardening but I can't stand listening to her go on and on so please anyone who knows anything about gardening in southeastern Pennsylvania please overload my inbox with your advice my first garden will be about 30 sq ft I plan to grow bell peppers (red and green, jalapeno peppers, habenero peppers, carrots, green beans, and snap peas. Most of these will probably be healthy snacks with the exception of the bell peppers which get thrown in my crock pot constantly and the green beans/snap peas which i'll roast and use with dinners or eat raw with dinners.

Gun control is the ability to hit that at which you're aiming.

Good Morning All! Just had to introduce myself before plowing into all the old posts.

I am one of those zone 4 gardeners who is still waiting another couple weeks to put in her tomatoes (we had an inch of snow on Saturday morning then temps went down 27 yesterday)

I have a lovely shaded yard filled with perennials, moss, herbs and a 48 square-foot vegetable garden ala Mel Bartholomew strategically placed in the one little sunny spot. Today I am planting spinach and beets!

Losing weight makes running easier and running makes losing weight easier.

Welcome to all the new garden team members. I love all the benifits of gardening; getting outdoors, exercise, serenity, and the joy of fresh veggies, blooming flowers, attracting birds and butterfly's!

Hi everyone! My name is Laura. I'm 24, living in PA about an hour above Philadelphia. I'm a beginner when it comes to gardening. I read one Spark blog post about gardening as exercise and it got a bug planted in my brain. About a week after reading it, I decided to plot out an area in the backyard... It isn't terribly large, but I should be able to plant LOTS of good stuff.
I know I might be a bit late for the early spring vegetables, but I plan on getting starter plants since I'm new to everything.

If anyone has any advice for a beginner, or just a word of encouragement, feel free to send me a messaeg and add me as a friend!

Thanks everyone!
~Laura

Hello everyone.
I am new on this team, but have been a "yard gardener" for years. As a matter of fact, my lawn is rather over planted. I love the way it looks, tho there's always room for improvement.
This is my first year growing vegetables. I know I'll encounter many new problems and hope to rely on the members of this team to advise me.

Hello, I am new here, but have been gardening for a long time. I grow or try most every type of seasonal vegetable that I can. Hoping to read more here about your gardens.

Hello everyone,

My name is Valerie. I'm not new to Spark, but I'm a gardener newbie.
We moved end of last September, and it's the first time I'm having a garden, (a small one: 150m≤ that's about 162 square feet.)
The garden has been neglected for more than 15 years, it was a total mess--we managed to cut the weeds (higher than me) before winter.
We split it into a vegetable garden and an ornamental garden (mainly grass.)

I haven't planted anything yet, as I live in the mountains (in the French Jura mountains close to Switzerland), and we had some frost till last week. Yet I have already begun my seeds, all organic, in a greenhouse.

I'm thrilled about gardening but don't know much -not to say nothing- about it.

Hello! My name is Amy. I moved to a 22-acre hobby farm at the end of last summer. I'm about to put a small garden in this year with plans to expand and put in a much, much bigger garden, a berry patch and an orchard. Our goals here at the farm (since I'm married and he gets a wee bit of say too) is eventually to start a small CSA. BUT, that's way in the future!

I grew up with gardeners in the family and I helped in those gardens. This will be the first place I've had as an adult where I can really put in a garden and reap the rewards for more than just a season before moving on and leaving my hard work behind. We're here to stay!

Howdy everyone! I've been trying to figure out all the tools and finding I really like spark. I can't believe all the motivation you get on here and more importantly the friends I'm making.
I will be doing some gardening this weekend. Thought I'd join this team to get tips and ideas. :)

Hi! I'm Paula, I live in California and when I grow up I want to be a gardener. (ha ha I'm 42) I'm not really sure I can call myself a gardener (yet) but I do enjoy puttering around in my backyard and getting my hands dirty. I just joined Spark 5 days ago so I'm still learning. I think if I hang out with you guys I will learn a lot!

Hi everyone! I've been on Spark for about 3 months but haven't done much with the Gardening Team and I'd like to change that, since gardening is my favorite thing to do! We live in Kansas in a Victorian farmhouse and have a 2.5 acre yard with lots of roses, old-fashioned perennials, a huge vegetable garden, fruit trees and more. Since DH and I both work full time and have 2 busy teenagers, we don't get to spend as much time gardening as we would like. We are both Master Gardeners but find there is always more to learn. I can't wait to get to know some of you fellow gardeners!

Hello!

Today I am going to plant a 60' row of purple asparagus. It will be a major workout. You have to dig a deep trench about a foot deep. Then I backfill will black gold about 2" then 2" of soil, then I will spread out the asparagus crowns.

Also, since I joined today I will be committed about losing 30lbs!

Just stopping in to introduce myself. Been a SP member since last May, but am new to your team. Live in NW PA, zone 5, and am an avid flower and vegetable gardener. Always interested in new organic information to help my quest to produce the best-- to eat and to enjoy.

My new gardening quest is a water garden. My husband created a lovely one for me for my happy 2010 gift (birthday, Christmas, Mothers' Day, Anniversary, etc.). Filling it gradually with koi and a pea gravel bog with plants to filter it naturally. Would love it if there was a topic just on water gardening. Need to continue to learn all I can. :-)

One of the lecturers at class told us about deer getting into his garden. He said the fencing he put up kept out the elk but the deer jump right over it and sadly, there was nothing he could do to keep them out.

He said they come foraging if they're having trouble finding food and water in their natural habitat. People feeding them cause them not to fear humans and they get into area they shouldn't be in.

Hope

I've heard some pretty awful things about what deer can do to a garden and how difficult it is to keep them away. Maybe something here will help you:

Hi everyone. I joined SP about a year ago and just learned of this team. I don't know why I didn't seek you guys out sooner?!

I'm 51, born and raised in Hawaii and now live in Arizona. I have always loved gardening but I don't grow much of anything in my yard except for cactus. I hope to change that soon. I'm currently taking a Master Gardener's class through the UofAZ extension. 3 more classes to go! I'm looking forward to volunteering with the Master Gardener's and learning more about gardening in the desert.

Hi. I'm new(ish) here. Last year I joined Spark People and sort of dropped out. I'm here under a new account because I couldn't find my old one.

At any rate, I'm 53 years old from Maryland. I don't have a particular talent for gardening, but I do manage some great clover, crabgrass, and chickweed.

I too find that raised beds work better. And my lantana loves sun, but I do admit that by late afternoon it is shaded by the house. Watering every day is key, especially for tomatoes. My gradfather said your local hardware store has a moisture control agent you can put in the soil to keep the water in, but he couldn't remember brands (he is 85), and I don't know if it's organic or chemically-based.

cat: i live in houston as well and am still learning! i am slowly learning that the soil here stinks and that raised beds with fresh soil work much better. also, because of our climate, our sun can be too harsh even for some full sun plants. for example, lantana is supposed to be a sun loving plant, but mine does better in partial shade during the summer. oh, another tip: you have to water EVERY day, sometimes twice once the temps reach the mid to upper 90s and higher.
