Im Elaine from Portland Oregon USA. My sleep patterns are all over the day and night. It has interfeared with my life with friends, family, doctors, appointments and in all aspects of my life. When I do get to sleep I wake up every hour having to go to the bathroom. Then after 3 or 4 hours of that I may sleep 3-4 hours straight. Maybe not. I live alone, have no friends, and do not like going anywhere by myself. I don't feel safe going out of my apartment at all. It has been sujjusted that I have this Agoraphobia. Have not been able to find any help for it. Also have multiple health issues to top it all off. I have PAD. I use a walker when I go out. The only transportation I have is public buses and Max Train. I will add to this as time go on. This gives you a good look as to where Im at. God Bless Each and Everyone of You. Have a Wonderful Week. Elaine elainesawyer@hotmail.com

GOD BLESSINGS TO EVERYONE. MAY GOD BE WITH YOU ALWAYS. HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK. TAKE CARE.

I'm Mem, I'm 28, single and I live with my parents to help them out and save me money!
I've always (always!) been a "night owl". If left to my own devices I'll stay up all night and sleep all day. I'm trying to get better about going to bed at normal hours and making myself get up at a decent time, but I'm unemployed right now and it is super hard to get up and stay up if I don't have to.
I'm hoping this challenge will help me develop better sleep habits. I know that my insomnia is triggered a lot by stress, and I want to learn how to channel my energy elsewhere.

Hi I am Vanessa,
The reason of me not getting a good night sleep is simple: Menopause, and caring for my elder parents. I have started eating right and now have a personal training, it feels good to get my body back into great shape, now just need to get the rest needed.

Hi JASHANTI
If you're worried about whats happening in the house you will never get to sleep well, I think my sleeping problems started from a similar thing when I was a kid I would never sleep deeply becuase I wanted/needed to hear what was happening in the house. If there is something that your worrying about happening you need to sort that out so you can relax and know everything is ok in the house so you can go to sleep properly.
Your kids need a well rested mummy so you should really try and figure out why your not sleeping . I hope your situation improves
Good Luck

Hi everyone, my name is Jay and i have a sleeping disorder. No seriously this can not be normal. I don't even remember what a good nights sleep fells like. I know that one of the reason i sleep so lightly is that i get up to check on my sweets (my kids) several times and i won''t allow myself a deep sleep sleep because i want to hear what going on in my house. I do have reason for this behavior-don't worry i'm not out of mind. emoticon

Okay so those are the reasons i can't stay asleep but why is it so hard for me to get there in the first place????

I ,if having a good night, can MAYBE get to sleep @ about 1 am after laying down @ 10 pm.. Then i'm back up @ 2 like clock work. Then back @ 4.

I have got to get some help now!!!!

Where to begin... I am a cancer survivor, and I recently moved back with my parents, to help my mom out after dad had a massive stroke. The stress level from being a survivor of cancer, and trying to help my parents, has affected my sleep. I am also trying to get back on track with eating healthy. I am an animal lover, and volunteer by running an animal feeding station.

Hi everyone
My name is Shelly and I have always been a very light sleeper but over the last few months it has been getting worse and worse , at one point I think I barley slept in about three weeks , I will be laying in bed really tired just not able to switch my brain off thinking about everything and everything (not nessicealy stressfull things). It's starting to really effect my uni work etc so I'm willing to try antything now . I have bought sleeping tablets on someones recomendation but was warned they can be really adictive so have only taken them 4 times over the last two months , but the last time I took them they didn't even work so getting really stuck now . I probably get about 2 hours sleep last night maximum , and I was in bed for 6 hours. :( x

Hello I'm Linda and I have problems sleeping through the night.

Last night I woke at 3 a.m. and it took an hour to get back to sleep. My body likes to heat up between 3 and 4 in the morning and that disturbs my sleep. I keep thinking great workouts will make me tired enough to get through the night. This problem seems to be very common in my age range 55-65 so I'm not sure there is much to do for it. I won't take prescriptions or some crazy OTC item unless I can read proof of it's efficacy.

I do like to read in bed and listen to my ipod when I'm not groggy. That may be a problem but not usually.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Sandy & I've never been a good sleeper. About 9 months ago the doctor prescribed sleeping pills because of the stress I was under while my son was dying. The pills have helped a lot with my sleeping, but I feel like it's probably time to try to do it on my own. Since I don't have to go to work the next two days, I thought this might be a good time to begin. I sure hope I can be successful with this challenge.

By the way, I scored 10 out of 10 on the sleep quiz. Too bad I haven't put that knowledge to good us.

Thanks Spark People.

Hi there!

Though I`ve always been a good riser, I`ve always struggled with sleep - falling asleep is my problem, not waking at night or too early. I can be dead tired and nothing...I will lay there blinking until 4am.

I know how good a regular sleep pattern makes us feel - we think, feel, and look better. It is at the core of a healthy lifestyle, something which I seek to practice going forward.

I look forward to getting some shut-eye...let`s do this!

Hi everyone,

I'm Mary and this is one of my first posts!

I've joined this challenge becausesleep is very important to the rest of my health goals-- eating right and exercising. I have two kids 5 and 6 years old. The only way for me personally to consistently exercise is to do it at lunch (walk) and in the early hours of the morning 5:00 AM. The rest of the time I am busy working and caring for the kids. If I get my exercise done early I have great energy the rest of the day and I am less likely to miss days.

But sleep is really important here! If I don't get to bed early - I want to sleep in. I need the sleep to help keep me on track for exercising. More importantly-- if I don't sleep enough I find myself binging on high calorie, unhealthy foods for energy. It's taken me years to recognize this really simple eating pattern.

I started new goals on my birthday (1/30)-- I've been exercising regularly for 1 week, eating healthy and sleeping. But I know how easy it is to mess up that sleep thing-- I want to stay up and xx (watch tv, read, surf the internet, whatever). Plus it just seems lame to be going to bed at 9 PM! I think this is a great challenge!

1 week down and I feel great! Want to keep it up.

Mary

Hi, I need to get back on a good sleep schedule. I have an 8 week old that is now sleeping 7-9 hours per night, but now I have a bit of insomnia it seems and I am starting back to work next week. Looking to get hopefully 7 hours myself (baby willing).

I'm joining this challenge to help me over the last few hurdles of getting consistently good sleep. BUT I'm also doing this for my children as well ... little do they know, they'll be doing this challenge with me :) I'm going to have to pay attention and ask questions when it comes to answering specific questions and figuring out how to get them on a consistent bed and wake time.

One of our problems is, DS11 has to wake at 6:15 in order to get to school on time (school starts at 7:20); DD16 regularly gets up at 6:00 to fix her hair (but sometimes will sleep later and do a pony tail); DD13 wakes at 7:00 in order to get ready for school. DD8 is homeschooled and I wake her at 7:30. It's tough to get the kids up at these times on the weekend when DH isn't behind it. I get up at 5:30 BUT DH doesn't like it when my alarm goes off and it is his late day or the weekend... so that presents issues but oh well, I need the consistency or I'm no good to anybody. So, I've got some things to work around and I may have to compromise on them in order to keep peace around the house :-/ and just teach them and teach them so that they can later make their own decisions. Even so, our weeknight bedtimes/routines need some overhauling!

Hello everyone! I'm Heather. I've always been a night owl, it never bothered me when I was a teenager but now I can feel it starting to take it's toll on me. Unfortunately I know my sleep habits have started to rub off on my three year old because he also is a night owl and has no problems going to bed at 11, 12, or even 1 AM. I'm hoping that by getting my sleep schedule back on track maybe I can get him going to bed at more normal times.

Hi! My name is Anita. I have just completed the January Jumpstart Challenge, so I feel my year is off to a good start. Last March, my husband and I decided to get serious about our health, so we started a low carb diet after doing much research. I've lost 20 lbs, but have stayed at the same weight for the past 5 months, give or take 2 lbs ( while cont. on diet and working out almost daily), while he has lost 50 lbs and kept it off with no exercise, just watching his eating. I realized that the big difference may be our sleep - he gets 8-9 hours a night, while I average 4-5. Besides having hypothyroidism, I also have a condition called "delayed sleep phase syndrome". It is not insomnia, but a circadian rhythm sleep disorder. When allowed to sleep naturally, I get a more normal 7-8 hours of sleep. ( There is a genetic link; my mom had it and my 2 daughters also seem to have it.) My problem is that I have a job that has 8-5 hours, making it difficult to get more than 5 hours sleep most nights. However, after reading several articles, including on SparkPeople, I think this sleep problem may be interfering with my weight loss, so I thought I'd try this challenge to see if it will help.

I'm positive this sleep challenge will help me get into a healthy sleep pattern - which I honestly can't remember ever having! I've always been a night owl and lately in college I've just let it get out of control to the point where I couldn't stay awake in my classes during the day or stay awake to study and read for class at night. However, I was never getting quality sleep.
I know how important sleep is, yet I haven't made it a priority to make a change. Now has to be the time for me to do that so I can feel better!! During the New Year's holiday I traveled to another time zone which completely threw off my sleeping times. Somehow I got into a pattern of only being able to sleep for 5 hours, no matter what time of day it was! Falling asleep at 11pm and waking up at 4am, not able to go back to sleep at all... led to me not being able to keep my eyes open by 5 or 6pm! I couldn't enjoy my days. Lately, I have been more normal with waking up without an alarm usually by 7am everyday, no matter when I fall asleep. At least I'm really awake when I wake up - unlike in the past. I'm in my last semester of college and I want to do well in classes, have energy during the day, and feel better and happier in general! The biggest difficulty I think I'll be facing is staying out and awake way too late on the weekends after going out and not being able to get back to normal on weekdays. I know this is vital to my well-being so I'm definitely going to do my best with this challenge!

Hello everyone, I have had sleep problems all my life, but didn't realize it was a major concern until I had my daughter, now I can't just have a nap whenever, I now have to follow her routine, which can leave me exhausted and not wanted to do the simple things like play with her. My biggest problem is not falling asleep, I usually end up waking up in the middle of the night (either on my own, or she wakes me up) and I am unable to fall back to sleep for hours. I am joining this team to find help and to try and develop a routine that might help my sleeping problem. thanks for reading!!

Hello everyone!! My name is Christina, I've had a sleep problem for years. So i have really got into a bad habit. It's straightened out some but I have a 4 yr old who for the past few months has been staying up until 3am. How she got that way i have no idea. It didn't seem to bother me until one day at work i couldn't stay awake i feel so irritable and i was yelling all the time. i don't see how she managed to go to bed at 3am and get up at 7am for school and it was the same timeline for me but it would take me about an hr to go to sleep after she didn't. So i'm here to not only for me to get in bed by 10 but for my daughter too. Shes been going to sleep by midnight which is a little better then 3am. I do have a habit also when my daughter goes to her dads on weekends as soon as i get home from work i don't think i'm tired but most of the time i will fall asleep on the couch while watching tv. I don't take naps much but when it hits me with not getting enough sleep i just crash. I'm trying to change that. Today is friday my daughter goes to her dads today and I'm telling myself i will not set down when i get home lol i will not fall asleep on the couch when i get off work today.. oh boy this is gonna be hard lol ....thanks for listening

Hey everyone!! My name is Karla and I'm posting in here for the first time so I will soon find out if I did it right. I joined the sleep challenge but I need some ideas. I have not been able to sleep at night and just around 8 am I get sleepy and I sleep until the afternoon. I have tried to stay up all night and out of my room for the whole day but just around 5 or 6 pm it hits me and I go in for a "which" last until about 2 am. ....and then I'm wide awake again. uuggghh. I'm at a loss. Right now I am unemployed which doesnt help at all but I really want to get up in the morning and exercise early. Trust me guys I am getting my workout but not when I want to and I know that makes somewhat of a difference. thank you for listening!

Hello everyone! :)

I'm Laura. I joined SparkPeople quite awhile ago, and then completely track and my motivation for maintaining my weight loss and fitness goals. I've let it go for far too long! But now it is a new year, and I want to show myself I CAN DO THIS! Losing weight is my primary goal, but I also want to become healthier all-around. My life needs improvement in many different areas, and a healthy, regular sleep schedule is definitely one of those areas. I have joined this challenge, because I think that if I improve my sleep habits, in addition to my fitness and eating/nutrition habits, I can become a healthier, stronger, and more positive person! :-)

My name is Jessie. I joined this challenge because my sleep routine is so horribly off, it's really having a negative impact on the rest of my life! My husband and I try to go to sleep around 9 pm because he has to get up at 4 am to go to work. I've been waking up at 1 or 2 am and not being able to fall back asleep...then in school around 10am I'm ready to pass out. Need to reset my sleep cycle!

I'm Carol, I just stared Sparking today and I know I need to get more sleep. My body wakes up after 6 hours no matter what time I go to bed. I probably need more exercise during the day to wear me out. So my goal is to get a full 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep.

Nailed it!

Hi, I'm Anita. I've been Sparking off and on for 5 years now, but after two foot surgeries, my focus is on total restoration of health. I've been taking 100mg of Trazodone for the past year because I have trouble staying asleep. The doc wants me to start to taper down and hopefully be off by March. As I'm exercising more and getting my eating back to my healthy norm, I'm exhausted at night and drifting off/staying asleep better each night. I use the IPhone Sleep Cycle app to track my sleep patterns, but need extra support during the waking hours to stay mindful of the necessity of good quality sleep when I'm tempted to burn the midnight oil.

HI, my name is Haley and I'm a 20 year old college student. I have noticed that I gained a lot of weight during my senior year in high school and my freshmen and sophomore year in college. I have been on SparkPeople since I believe this past summer... but I did not have the drive to ever log my food intake, or get into the community. I have an extremely hard time sticking with something and because of that... I am hoping for a little support. I was diagnosed with bulimia in 2008 and over came that. But I seemed to have flipped the spectrum and went from being severally underweight to over weight. I eat mostly chips and soda because I work at a general store and I am a really picky eater... which makes it hard to choose healthy foods. I also hardly ever sleep, yet I'm always tired and I'm normally too busy, lazy, and tired to do exercise. I am on here not only to lose a little bit of weight, but to also become a healthier person.

I am Nan, 57, and re-starting this challenge starting Monday night. I must get to bed by 8.30pm the night before each workday to get 8 hours sleep. I just always manage to find too many things to do to make it by then. I do listen to Paul Mckenna stress cd to help me fall over and most nights it works. Night all.

Hi, my name is Pat, I am from NE Ohio. I am 53 and have had trouble sleeping all my life. I hope to gain some knowledge and habits to try and learn to sleep better. I already know that coffee is my biggest problem. So I know I need to work on that. A journal looks like a great idea so I will start that today. Good luck everyone and its very nice to met you.

Hi I'm Eliza from Texas. I believe my sleep issues are due to my crazy life! I am a bilingual kindergarten teacher, have a 5 year old active son, have been in an 8 year relationship, and am working on my Master's degree. I also have a lot of anxiety over my weight and have dealt with it pretty much my entire life. The scale goes up and down 20+ just about every year or every other year. Lately I've felt extremely lethargic during the day when previously I hadn't so I joined so that I can get my sleeping under control.

Hi! I am Jill. This is my third day on this team. My goals are to go to sleep no later than 11:00 pm and get up at 7 - 8 am. The first night I fell asleep on the couch with the TV on around 10:00. I woke up around 5 am. Last night I went to bed early so I could read a book. That didn't last long at all. I fell asleep and woke up about 3 hours later. Thought I slept all night. I hope I get help on this team.

Hey!!! My name is Hannah. I am 21 and I live in Texas. This is my second attempt at spark people and it is going really good! I have changed my eating habits and I joined a gym. I am tired of being overweight, unhealthy and unhappy. I am trying to be an all around better person, physically, mentally, and emotionally. I don't sleep very well so I decided to join this team. Hopefully this works so I can stay motivated to reach all of my goals!!!!

Hello. My name is Rachel and my goal is to have a sleeping schedule and to get up feeling refreshed. I hope everybody meets their goals.

Hi there,
my name is Fran. I joined this challenge because I noticed that I always have a hard time waking up in the morning and always end up using the time I should dedicate to exercise to hit repeatedly the snooze button. I hope that by setting up a regular sleeping schedule and aiming at 7-8hrs of sleep at night, I will wake up energized and ready for a busy day, instead of already tired, late and skipping morning exercise routine!

Hi!

I'm Stacia, 21 years old and a fulltime student. I am new to SP and learning my way around, and joining a couple teams (and challenges) along the way. Currently, I sleep about 5 hours a night because it takes me forever to fall asleep, and even when I do get the recommended 8 hours I am still sleepy in the morning. No matter how long I sleep I usually wake up tired, and before I even fall asleep I lay in bed often for a couple hours! I want to feel rested and ready to go when I get up in the morning, which is the most important reason why I joined the team

Hi! My name is Nikki. I have been struggling to lose weight for a while. I have never really associated my bad sleeping habits with my putting on pounds, but the more I read the more I am beginning to think there is probably a connection. So here I am on this road to good sleeping habits with you, a night owl reluctant to give up my night "me" time, but here we go... :)

Hi, my name is Samantha. I have a good and bad relationship with sleep. Sometimes, I fall asleep quickly, and I wake up feeling great. Other times, I can't fall asleep for anything in the world. Currently, I am going through the latter. I have tried sleep aids, teas, yoga, etc. Sometimes they help; sometimes they don't. I joined this challenge to learn about new techniques in order for me to get a restful night sleep all the time.
