That is a beautiful pine! I learned yesterday that the female cones are the large ones at the top and male cones are much smaller (and may have fallen off by now) and towards the bottom of the tree.

Tulip poplars are so beautiful - they grow so tall and straight, and their leaves and flowers are so interesting. And I suppose the flowers are tasty too, to the squirrels anyway!

My favorite tree near my home is my neighbor's huge weeping willow. The top of it cracked during a high wind storm about 5-6 years ago, and the neighborhood was sad about it. Well, a tree guy said to leave it standing and it will regrow fast, and he was right! What other favorite trees do you have near your home?

Yes, I still am surprised when I see a woodpecker at my feeder. I have a funny battle with the squirrels - it's a hopeless battle for me but I try to save at least most of the bird seed for the birds. I don't want to hurt the squirrels - I like them too but they eat everything. The squirrels have moved on luckily.....for now! I hope the sparrow comes back! I like the sounds that doves make.

That is a very lucky sparrow to find your bird feeder! Very pretty. I see woodpeckers sometimes at my bird feeder. At first I was surprised because I thought all that they ate were insects, but not so.

Yes, this male robin was really trying hard. I don't know if it is the same individual, but last spring/summer a male robin attacked his reflection during April and again sometime mid-summer, so I'm guessing he fathered two clutches of eggs in the breeding season. I have different stickers this year, but they didn't work! Poor guy must have a sore head.

Very similar to the wildlife where I live! Yes, I was relieved that the bird was OK. I have stickers on one of my windows into which birds commonly fly, but this was a different window!
A few weeks ago, there was a male robin constantly attacking his reflection, even though I have the stickers on that particular window.

I haven't noticed any new wildlife this year. There was a bird on my deck this morning - I think it flew into a window. It's OK, luckily, and it has flown away.
I see coyote in my yard occasionally and plenty of deer, groundhogs,, rabbits, turkeys, songbirds - it's nice. What sorts of wildlife to you see where you live?

Thanks for asking about the forest - it isn't progressing, unfortunately. I'll need to find someone else to help me. You are so right about wood piles and dead trees being important habitats!

Yes, I bet the landscapers would use the fencing around any saplings that are planted. The flowering trees sound like they are doing really well and are protected!

Ii think this is going to be a forest restoration project over several years, and I'll try to be patient. Too bad avocado plants can't grow outdoors where I am!

That's really great about letting nature take care of decomposing the trees - it's such an important habitat.

A park in town planted new saplings about 5 years ago and they put protective fences around each one. Driving past it this spring I saw each little tree has some flowers on it. I'm sure your landscapers will do a good job for you! I agree that they must know what they're doing so that you can relax and trust them.

That's really great about the garden on your brother's property - you can both work in it and reap the benefits! Your yard with the birdbath sounds lovely.

I had some formlerly wooded area on my property that has been devastated by high winds over the last 10 years or so, and now it looks awful. I asked a landscaper that does restoration to look at it, and I'm interested to seeing what plans she can come up for it. I hope it's within my budget for this. Luckily all landscapers around here know to plant deer-resistant plants or put up fencing to protect saplings until they grow tall enough.

My brother has a big garden that I love spending time in but I don't have room for my own in my small yard. I do like the border plants I have close to the fence and have a birdbath in the center of the back yard with oyster shells around it and a gazing ball.

The manager of my townhouse is careful to keep up with my home repairs and I'm glad not to have to worry about them.

Deer jump over my lowish fence sometimes but mostly stay close to the forest behind the townhouses. My neighbors set out vegetables for them away up the hill at the border of the forest and I always donate a box of mixed lettuces.

I don't have any houseplants but the avocado trees sound pretty!

Deer are beautiful animals - they are just overpopulated here. There's really no where for them to go, so they eat whatever they can.
I planted an avocado seed once it grew into a beautiful tree that I had for like 5 years. Is your avocado tree very tall now?

I can imagine! I live in KY for a few years. I like living within a few hours of the ocean. emoticon emoticon What is going to be in your garden this year? I grow tomatoes, peppers and herbs on my deck - the deer eat everything in the ground here!

I love your home - it's so beautiful! That looks like a spacious front and side porch. Yes, the appointment went well - we went to one of our state-run vaccine distribution sites for the vaccine, and it was at one of the county fairgrounds! It was super organized.
Today is a day of my weekend house chores but also some gardening in my flower garden emoticon

Good luck with the home repairs! I'm working today but will end early to take my daughter to get the COVID vaccine. It's a beautiful day today in my part of NY.

Hi, team! emoticon I've been eating smaller portions and drinking more healthful things. I'm careful not to have too much fruit juice or too much sodium in the vegetable juices. Is everyone enjoying the spring weather? It might be chilly still, but at least it is spring. emoticon

Hello, my name is Jill, aka CreakyCat. That's my cat Sparky in my profile pic. I enjoy running, hiking, social dancing (except not right now) and gardening.

I discovered SparkPeople years ago, and having community support and helpful tools helped me lose 20 pounds after I'd hit a plateau losing weight on my own.

Flash forward: I regained that weight and a lot more, so I'm back, and the SP magic still works! By tracking meals and exercise, drinking 8 cups of water a day, setting small, manageable goals and developing healthy daily habits, I've lost over 20 lbs so far, with still a ways to go.

So join me! There are lots of groups out there, but I felt we needed one focused on the challenges and rewards of middle-age. I can't wait to hear from you!
