I'm getting all pumped up to do this! :) Hearing what everyone says, and thinking of all the little ways I can gain from this new "undertaking" - I'm wicked pyching myself up! haha. After hitting the gym in a bit the hubs and I are heading out to find me better running shoes (mine are basically dead), and I'm hoping to start tomorrow! :)

time to face these fears of mine head-on. :)

Good for you Kuria. I said the same thing now don't get me wrong I'm still working at it. I'm only on Week 2 Day 1 but everyone who is either doing it or has done it swears by it. I admit I'm beginning to see why.

Okay I'm pretty new to this couch to 5k group. So far the whole idea of running is just a thought in my head. Wasn't to sure if I could do it at my weight. Kept telling myself to read it and then maybe try after losing 30 pounds. The Fat Runners Club is perfect! I've read each thread and laughed! I guess no more excuses for me now huh? Going to start this week!

I have some of the same crazy fears. I took my kids to track practice all summer but I was too afraid to try to run on the track because I didn't want the people there to watch me. Even though not too many of them that were there doing anything either. Instead I walked which was better than sitting there but still. I'm determined to get through the c25k so next season I can jog on the track and not be worried about what I look like.

LILMYSTERY - If I can do it with people I work with AND Military men.. you can! I know you can. They are probably silencely cheering you one! Think that all those people are sparker and only want to see you achieve your goals! Haha it's funny we have the opposite fears... but we both about over come. Just be careful running when it's dark... car and crazy people!

I understand the fear of running where people can actually SEE you - I'm thinking I'll start the c25k this week when it starts getting dark so I at least feel a little more comfortable until I "find my groove". haha.
But I'm wondering - is anyone else uncomfortable running on a treadmill in the gym?? I'm more nervous about that than running outside! I can just see it now. . . sweating profusely and THUMPING with every step. haha. In a little gym filled with people I WORK with - I'm having a hard time convincing myself to do it. haha

It'll take a while to "lose weight" since your body is not building crazy amounts of muscles. Do you take measurements? You'll lose inches way before you loss the weight.

Thanks. I appreciate the words. I'm trying to stay focused and maintain my motivation. I weighed in today after week 1 and I'm up a pound. So I'm trying to keep my eye on the bigger picture.

Well I'm glad you took that epiphany and er... ran with it haha. Anyone can do it... maybe you have to take a week and redo it a few times. Heck I had to restart twice due to injury then after a car accident. I was itching to start back after the accident, I'm sure the PT guy wanted to slap me everytime I asked if I could start back running again haha!

Its funny you say that because I've been surprised at myself so far too. I didnt think I could run at all being so heavy. I was always walking thinking that I'd run when I got smaller. My epiphany moment if you will happened while my kids were running summer track. I watched as they trained and got stronger. Then I noticed how many of the parents were so overweight and still screaming at the kids to push it and run faster. I thought first I wanted to get the same satisfaction they seemed to get from training and doing well. And two I didnt want to be one of the parents who was yelling at their kid to do better when they couldnt even walk the bleachers to get a seat without stopping.

Goal weight - no. I want 140 haha.

But I'm loving my body RIGHT NOW! It's strong, it's beautiful (even if not by media standards) but it's got a lot of work to do haha. I'm doing this to get healthier and the weight loss is just a perk for me now. I had a huge ah-ha moment during the C25K program that made me realize how much my body can do now and every week I push it to do more. I guess I appreciate it now and want to keep doing this to help my body be the best it can be at whatever weight.

You will. I did all of C25K on the treadmill and it wasn't until W9D3 I finally went outside! Baby steps, do what's comfortable bc that's what you'll stick with. If it helps... outside is WAY MORE FUN than a cement wall.

I'm weird the same way. I have a perfectly good park next to my house that I'm terrified to run around because I dont want people seeing me huff and puff. Maybe once I have a couple more weeks in the c25k....

Yea I graduated in April, ran a 5K in june on post but I'm still scared to run on post haha. I'm weird. It's more that I'm running around the blocks and people NOT working out, just driving or walking will see me. I'm fine running at home, but I'd like to lift afterwards...

My husband is a recruiter so we arent near a base anymore. I think Liz is right. I know when I work out I'm so focused on myself I don't look around much. Are you already through the C25k program? I'm on Week 2 Day 1.

Thanks Liz! I just need to stop worrying about what other people think...

Susan - where are you stationed? I'm at APG, MD. Took me 7 months to get to the gym, I've been going ever since, it's the running outside that I'm scared of...

Hey I'm new to this group but could use all the support I can get.

I'm also a military spouse and know exactly what you're talking about. My husband has been in charge of the overweight PT program before so believe me when I tell you that you won't be the only one jiggling down the road emoticon

Plus think of the people you may inspire to get up off their butts and do the same. I havent gotten up the nerve to run outside in front of anyone so I totally understand. Its my next goal. Let me know how it goes for you.

Come on Amanda - you will be fine!!!
Just jump right in there.
It's been my experience everybody is so focused on their own workout out they don't notice anyone else's. If anything, I would get positive comments for being a big girl working out. And now when I see someone who looks a little self conscious I try to give them a quick thumbs up.

Ok you guys will understand this...

I work for the army and I used the gym for free. This is the first day I'm going to grow a pair and run on post. This way I can get my run in and lift afterwards. I'm scared... petrified actually. Don't really want Army men to see me jiggling down the road haha. In need of a pep talk...

Oh, and HI! My name is Courtney and I'm just starting to ATTEMPT at running. haha. I'm 225lbs on a 5'7 frame so I'm definately in this category! I used to play soccer, but that was about 8yrs ago in HighSchool and I haven't run since. Lots of ellipticals - so I'm hoping I've been working up my cardio - but running is a completely new beast to me.
I'm a well-endowed girl who sweats worse than a man at nothing, but I'm tired of waiting around to try this! :)

I'm not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but I find "Body Glide" to be a lifesaver when I'm working out! It helps keep any of the various parts of the body from chafing. I've used it on my thighs, under the ladies, and even on my feet to help protect against blisters!
Even the hubs swears by it. :)

Hope this helped someone!

Well, this might sound ridiculous and it's a little embarrassing, but I promise, it worked for me! I started using deodorant under the girls, and not a chaff since! I definitely recommend giving it a try. That Glide that people are talking about might work too, but I've never tried it. o.o

I also ran across a thread somewhere not too long ago asking about sports bras especially for those us who are more endowed. They do make them, but it seems we have to go to little super specialty fitness stores to find them! I'll have a look around and see if I can find it again...

If not now, when?

They are a blessing and a curse. You should always be happy with what you have. When I weighed 120, I wore a B cup! It was heaven. So it's a good thing to wait until you reach your goal, then decide.

haha the grass is never greener on the other side! Guys see it as a blessing (to them...) I see it as a curse. They are the reason I started this journey. I debated reduction but I decided I wanted to be at a healthy weight then decide... so here I am! If i'm 140 and still not a "normal" size (meaning able to buy sexy bras at VS) then I might still get the reduction. So yea... we got a little more to strap down emoticon Wish I could strap the booty down and keep from jiggling too haha!

I can't decide if I'm still jealous of my curvy spark sisters or grateful that it's not been added to list of hassles I have to overcome in order to work out.

I have several of these bras and I get them in a cup size smaller than I wear in a regular bra. When I want extra support, I wear a new one on top of the old one. That really holds them in!

Mana8503, I found this bra that has the wires on the outside of the bra. I think they are really comfortable. Good price too. They come in different colors. It's Lily of France In Action Sport Bra. Here is a link, but you can find it on other sites as well.

Hey - another thing - I can't seem to find a sports bra that doesn't rub the skin off the underneath of my boobs haha! Er sorry if there's guys on here... I used to double up and that REALLY rubbed so I invested in $40 sports bras one a 38 to really strap them down running and one a 40 which is good on the elliptical. And I'm still getting a patch of rubbed skin. I got them at Dick's sporting goods and they are nice, underwire and all, great support but I'd like all my skin...

Hi, I'm Erica. I started W3 of C25K this week. So far, so good. I'm so glad that I found this group. There's a lot of great information here already. I think I'll be investing in some bike shorts and body glide very soon. :-)

Welcome to all! And Gina, I think you'll really like running if you were a soccer player before!

I hear you all on the chafing issue. I got a pair of bike shorts from Sports Authority that goes to the knee in XXL, but they have them in 3XL and 4XL too. They're my best friends for running! www.sportsauthority.com/product/inde

Hi, I'm Gina and on Monday I am going to start the challenge. I am both nervous and excited about getting out there to run again. I haven't been running and I mean REALLY running in over a year. I know it's going to hurt the first few weeks but then I'll hopefully manage to get my stride back and the pounds will just fall away. Well at least that's what my biggest hopes are.

I was happiest when I was a soccer player running around the field. I had a nice lean body and I could eat whatever because I could just burn it off. I'm so happy to have found this team because somehow I have a feeling that it's going to change me in all ways possible.

So here's to hoping...

Claudia, One of the things I do is walk the high school stadium stairs. It's a high intensity workout with no impact. Maybe you could find something like that for you.

Hi - I'm new to the team and new to running. I'm used to walking up and down hills in the Pacific Northwest. Since we moved to Arizona, my neighborhood is so flat, I needed the extra challenge. Right now the challenge is going to be my hips. They get really sore and the running doesn't help. If I can get some weight off, I think they'll be fine. This morning I had to walk most of the way.

Thanks for being a co-leader!

I'm definitely part of this group. =) I haven't even tried doing a workout in shorts yet. I have a hard enough time wearing a skirt for a wedding or church because I sweat so much, so I can't even imagine actually doing anything without 'protection', ha!

If not now, when?

I'm with you all. I "ran" my first 5k last weekend and did it in 37:17. We'll see what this weekend holds.

Oh yea - the first time I busted out the soffes to run I forgot the cream... I was bleeding and it scabbed over. I'm ok if I use the monistat cream... I was just excited I was wearing shorts from HS haha.

I made the mistake of running in shorter shorts for a 15k I did back in 2008 and that was DEFINITELY a mistake. I experienced severe chafing and actually was bleeding by the end of the race.

I run in yoga capris or pants now and buy new pairs whenever they're on sale so I don't experience the same nightmare!

Haha I love this idea!

I'm Amanda, but most friends call me Mana. I Graduated in April and have been running 2-3 times a week since. I really dread going back to the treadmill this winter!!! I'm 5'1 so 170 is a heavy load for my frame haha. I wear soffee shorts and a lot of monistat chaffing cream to prevent the chub rub! I listen to hip hop, oldies, country and rock when I run. I ran a 5K in June at work - 37 mins was my time. I hope to run more once the heat decreases!

I loved your intro Kristina!!! You totally jumped hurdles and smashed misconceptions with it.

YES - it's OK to run a 14/15 min/mile. AND IT IS A RUN!!!!! :) :) :)

I was 247 when I started c25k... It can so be done.

Congrats on Week 6 Kristina! emoticon

I'll start! I'm Kristina, and I'm a new co-leader of this group. I run on treadmill and outdoors (but mostly on a treadmill in this heat). I'm on W6 of C25K and my first competitive 5K is on 9/26.

I'm a big girl, over 250 pounds, and wear tighty bikies to keep my thighs from rubbing. I listen to a variety of music when I run, and while hip hop isn't my fave genre it just might be my fave running music. I run slow... about a 14-15 minute mile, and that's OK!

Hi everyone!

I thought I'd start a thread for "fat runners," so we can chat about misconceptions, special concerns, rubbing thighs, bouncing boobies, and all those lovely things we have to worry about!

I wrote a blog/manifesto about this yesterday, called "But I'm Too Fat To Run!" which can be found here: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

So come here, chat, ask questions and introduce yourselves!
