Thanks again Kathy!

NOPE - not Harley riders! And at the moment not sure what they will be using in Alaska, not their "regular" rides though....

My hubby is actually out West (Utah today) on a 3-week motorcycle adventure, won't be back til Sept 15...after that they'll begin to firm up Alaska plans...

So I'll be in touch with questions in a few weeks I'm sure! Thanks! Judi

Sure, Judi - ask away. You can sparkmail me or ask me here - maybe someone else will be interested also.

Do you now where they are planning go ride to in Alaska? Are they riding Harleys? My son, brother and neighbor are Harley riders. They know a lot of the Harley people up here.

If you let me know when, where, etc. maybe I can find some good webpages for you to visit and tell you of my experiences in those places (if I've been there). :)

Have a great evening and God bless.

Thanks for the welcome Kathy! Your pictures and quilts are gorgeous!

It is of particular interest to me that you live in Alaska...my husband and son are planning a 3-week trip there on their motorcycles, after my son graduates from high school in June 2008.

Perhaps I'll have some questions for you!

Greetings to all!

Although I technically joined SP months ago, that was just a "look-see"....

I really started here on August 6th, and have been just delighted by everything!

The support here has been awesome, and I have consistently stayed at the low end of my caloric range, and have kept up with (and increased) my exercise!

I'm 48 years old, married for 26 years, and live in Northwest Hartford County, CT. I have a 22-year old daughter in NYC and a 17-year old son who is a HS senior.

I am bound and determined to continue eating healthy and working out regularly - wanna look great, and, especially, feel great!

Sorry for the "delay" in joining the class! emoticon

Oops, I think I should have posted here instead.

I'm Emily, I'm new, and I've finally figured out enough of this site to be able to navigate my way here. I am trying to lose about 45 pounds, but I'll be content with 20 or 30. I'm a 30 year-old graphic designer in Ohio. I'm quitting smoking at the same time as this dieting, so I'm anticipating a slow weight loss. I've started going to the gym, but have been sick for 1.5 weeks, so I missed a week...damn cold. I have two dogs and a fiance whom I love very much. Ummm...what else. A big part of my "other" goals is relaxation/yoga/mindfulness and in general feeling content with myself. I'm 30 years old, and getting married next June. I think that's all I know about myself at this point. :)

Oh. I used to weigh about 205. I lost some weight switching medications and doing Weight Watchers about a year ago, but gained some of it (10 lbs) back. Here I am again.

MTRHEA, you and I are BOTH quitting smoking! I'm on day 21 today. Using the patch.

Hello!

I am so excited to have found this site. I am a 30 yr. old mother of a spunky almost 3 yr. old girl and have been married for 3 years. I am also trying to quit smoking (which seems to be harder than trying to change my eating habits right now, until company comes next week and I'm not as able to control the where and when of my food).

I have a long way to go and I don't think I will get there with any speed, but if I just keep pushing I know it will happen. I have been overweight for so long I would love to see what I look like with a little less meat on my bones.

Also, I realized during the whole setting up my page process that their are like almost no pictures of me by myself and the ones that do exist aren't very flatering. I really want to change that.

Hello,

I have been a big gurl for all my life, and decided to really give exercise and diet a big chance before I go and have surgery. Someone from my job recommended I try this site for help, recordkeeping, and support. I have been here for a couple of weeks now, and things seem ok. Like I guess everyone is new in the group, if you ever want to talk, or need motivation, or would like to give some encouragement, just drop me a note or so and I will get right back to you.... emoticon

I restarted on August 8th with sp. I first started in 2006 in August.
I was not able to log on daily due to working 12 hours a day during the summer plus a car accident that curtailed doing anything but work and resting.

Hi everyone! I've been on Spark for a couple of weeks now, but just getting around to the introductions.

I live in Vancouver, BC with 3 kids, 2 dogs and 6 cats in a 100 year old house that I am slowly renovating. I ride my bike to work every day, and am carefully getting back into running after damaging my knee three years ago.

I'm taking my kids on a cruise in October and am determined to get down to 125lbs for that, then down to 115lbs by Christmas. I'm really happy that I've found this site and am looking forward to supporting and getting support from all of you as we journey towards weight loss and increased health!

Hi! Easier to read my page, but long story short, 4 years ago I lost 77 pounds, and over the last 4 years have gained back about 15, (almost all of it during a time I thought I had breast cancer) so not bad considering I turned 30, but still time to say HEY!!!!!!!!
So, I realized I didn't want to just "maintain" anymore, I want to finally drop these last 40 pounds. I already eat very healthy, as does my family, but slowly the portions got more and more, the exercise wasn't regular, etc... So I am thrilled to have such a user-friendly site to really track my food and exercise! I started running this summer, had never ever run before HATED it, but committed to my friend that I would run in a 4th of July race with her. In the last 2 weeks alone I've ran 20 miles!!! 5x a week, 2+ miles a day, plus strength training 3x. Even at my lowest weight before, I didn't feel this good.
So I'm here to encourage others, it keeps me on track myself. For those of you over 200#, I've been there and it is SO worth everything! (I was 229)
A book changed my life, best quote ever, "No one's putting the food in your mouth but you".
Anyhoo, what a great website, and keep on track!!
I'm happier than I have been in my entire life, and I love every minute of getting down and playing with my kids!
Oh, one last thing, what was my BOTTOM point was I was denied health insurance because I was "obese".
LETS BE THE GREATEST CLASS EVER!

I eat, therefore I run.

I'm 20 years old and live with my father, fiance, and younger brother. Kind of an odd setup, I know, but my dad works full time (also travels a lot) and is a single father so my fiance and I are the back-up set of parents. This means that I'm essentially a mother at 20; I do the cooking, the cleaning, picking my brother up from school, etc. Plus I take a full load in college every semester. I'm working on my double BA in Creative Writing and Illustration (links to my works via the website in my sig). So, needless to say, I stay very busy. But being the cook and grocery shopper does allow me to have some control over what's in the house, though I have some picky eaters to contend with (they love raw veggies, but won't touch cooked ones).

I'm in Kansas, doing my last semester at JCCC and transfering to KU next semester.

As for my interests: I'm a big bookworm. Also a giant role-playing addict. I'm into games, art, philosophical discussion, powerful cinema, technological advances; basically anything with creativity and intelligence. And some darker/weirder interests as well. You'll have to get to know me for those.

What I need the most support on is my exercise. I was born and raised in Alaska and just can't take the heat nor humidity of the mid-west. So I can't exercise outside, and driving to the gym each day just isn't doable on my gas budget. I have a few at home options I'm going to try to stick with though.

Well, sorry it was so long. I'm afraid I'm just a little too comfortable writing. =P But it's great to meet you all and good luck on all your goals!

Just started and like a good book, I really cannot put this down. Thank you to whoever put this together and I am so glad I found it. emoticon

I'm from Chicago, Illinois, and It's late but I've already stayed on "track" for two days now. That's one of my goals. Now my other goal will be stay on track for one week, then two, three and oh my a whole month! Something I've never been able to do.

Anyway, take care everyone. Have a successful day tomorrow.

Hi Sam! There are tons of things to do in Sarasota and spring is awesome because it's not too hot or humid yet. The first thing I have to recommend, of course, is that you come to one of our ski shows. We perform every Sunday at 2:00 February through May. Our site is right next to Mote Marine which you'll definately want to visit if you like aquariums. We also have one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Siesta Key beach.

Send me a private message and I'll give you more suggestions.

Sun, Sea and a realy fast ski boat....now that's living!

Hi my name is Anne. I am a 41 year old mother of two teenagers. I have a long way to go and exercise and not noshing all day are the hurdles I face. Today is my first day and I am just learning how to keep track. I have been doing weight watchers with some success since January but have been on a plateau since May. I know I am not being careful enough and hope that this tracking, etc. will help.

You have done very well, Deborah.

I am very happy to hear that your son has done so well and I honestly believe it is because he received some one-on-one when he needed it most. YOU have made all the difference in his life! God bless you for taking on that responsibility and for giving him the chance he needed. Wow!

Hi Kathy,
It is nice to meet a kindred spirit when it comes to homeschooling. I graduated my oldest last year. He really benefitted from the homeschooling experience as he has physical, hearing and vision disabilities. We tried the school route but it was awful for him. He has now completed one year at a junior college near our home. I can still remember his first grade teacher telling me he had met his potential. Imagine if I had believed her. My daughter has one more year to go with me and then I graduate her as well. It has been such a blessing for our family to be able to homeschool. I see you feel the same way.

We're also a very military family. My husband is a Marine (inactive right now), My brother is in the Air Force, my B-I-L was Navy ... the list goes on and on. :)

It is nice meeting you Kathy.
Blessings,
Deborah

Hi BarrieF, good point but it has fewer calories so it helps some people. It's like sweet-n-low or equal. Equal gives me migranes so I can't use it but I do like how sweet-n-low sweetens my tea. It tastes better and mixes better than sugar. Splenda would be my 2nd choice as it doesn't seem to sweeten my tea as well. emoticon

Any ways, I do think splenda did make the crisps taste better than sugar. Sometimes sweet it too sweet.

Lots of people would just rather use regular sugar and cut back on their portions and that's probably the smartest way - so if that's you - go for it. Whatever works for you is great.

Take care.

I realy do not understand Splenda AT ALL! .. its confuses me, because for example the commercial says "tastes like sugar bacause its made from sugar!" ... ummm well then isnt it sugar? and then how would it be healthier? I personaly feel that it is just a ploy to pull all of us people who are trying to cut back on sugars and such, into buying it because its not "realy" sugar! hmmm?!

Welcome Nina. GREAT for you and your mom! Hey, I'm finding that splenda works great in baking, even the brown sugar they sell. I made a rhubarb crisp with it and it was better than the one made with sugar. You might try that when you bake and it will help a little.

My poor sons, I quit baking long ago and now one refuses to eat any chemicals so he won't go for the splenda thing... when I bake for him I try my hardest to stay away from it.

Struggles of life, but each time I try to remind myself of how good I'll feel when I lose this extra weight.

Take care and have a great weekend!

Hello All
My name is Nina I am a 26 year old stay at home mom of three beautiful little girls;6, 4, 2. I got a call from my mom to let me know how much weight she had lost and realized that she now only weighs 80 lbs. more than I do. I am very glad that she is losing weight but it was a reality call for me. I have 52 lbs. to lose and will need all the help I can get. I have a thing for baking.

Walking. Walking will do it. I'm telling you, when I walk it does something to my thinking that really, really helps me to stay on track.

I really need a good walking partner!! I hope you will find one because you will notice a big difference.

Get a walking partner, if you dont' have one already, and let me know what walking does for you, ok?

I'm also on that boat. I need more motivation. My problem is that when I try to lose weight and don't see results quickly then I don't want to do it anymore. This time I'm gonna stick it out to the end.

Hi Carrie. You and I are alike in that we "lose motivation quickly"... man, do I know that story!!

You know why I think that is?? I'm not sure but I think it may be a problem of "creative" people. emoticon It would be an interesting study any ways.

So, there is probably a reason in our make up that we are this way, but it sure is frustrating when we need to lose weight, that is for sure. I'll try to help you if you'll try to help me, ok?

We can do this!! We can!! We can!! I know we can!!

Take care of yourself, get your rest and let me know how your weekend goes.

God bless.

Good for you, Workinprogress! We home schooled our sons till they entered 9th Grade. Then they went to our church school. Now they are in the military and have been to college... so it didn't hurt them one bit to be home schooled.

It won't always be easy, you'll have your days, but is so very worth it. Our family was stronger and they got to spend time with their father that they never would have been able to if they had gone to public school.

This was a good thing in mnay ways but one really good reason was because their father was killed in a plane crash when they were in their teen years and I am so glad they got that extra time with him.

Take care.

Hi my name is Carrie. I'm a single mother of one and determined to lose my baby weight, seeing as how I haven't shed a pound of it and my son is almost 1. I tend to lose motivation quickly and fall off the wagon hard.

Hi, I'm Jan and I live in Eastern Washington. I just joined this site a couple of days ago and so far it's been addicting! I am 46, a single mother of two foster boys, and a member of Weight Watchers. I just found a WW support team on this site, so I am psyched to get involved! Welcome to everyone who is starting out this week - we can all do this together! emoticon

Hello everyone. I am new for the 2ne time to SP. I am married, with four children (13,9,8,2), and teach high school.

I did really well last time I committed to SP, but some family issues caused me to lose motivation. I got a new username, and am hoping to get some new motivation.

Hope to talk to you all again soon.

Maybe it is the third day thing. I did break down and have a smoothie king smoothie - blackberry dream, but I had it made skinny with splenda, so I dont' think it was too bad.

Maybe trying to walk around a bit will bring the ole energy level up. I will try that.

Thanks for the support!

Hang in there Michelle. I think there is something about the 3rd day in things. In daycare we all know that the 3rd day with a new child is the hardest for some reason. Perhaps in changing eating habits the 3rd day is the day that the body says 'are you really gonna do this?'

Can you increase your water any? Maybe get yourself to march in place for just 5 minutes? Anything that changes the eating pattern even if only for a few minutes. You know, I'm really talking to myself here cos I finished lunch, dessert and a few minutes ago went out to peruse the cupboards. I'm not really hungry, just wanting to eat...so I better take my own advice!

Hang in there, we can do this and get past this bump in the road. ....Keep on Spark'n......kath

Good day all! Wow what diversity we have. Not having a good day... have been hungry and tired all day... Ughhhh... It's like my get up and go has got up and left. Other than today I have done fine the past two days. Eating better has been good for my sugar. Have had lower ranges the past few days, so diet and exercise are working to help keep it down.

Hope everyone is have a great day!

Hi, I'm Tisha. This is my second time joining SparkPeople. I joined a couple of months ago. I completely lost steam. So, I decided yesterday that I will fully commit to the theory of SparkPeople and to mark that commitment I will start anew. So, here I am (again). I want to lose a ton of weight and teach my beloved son how to live a health-full life.
I look forward to being a much better sparkperson this time around. Thanks!

Biking is amazing! I got into it when I was 15, and decided then that I wanted to do the "Erie Canal" ride here in New York. Unfortunately, no one in my immediate surroundings wanted to join me, so I had to go alone on the tour. It turned out to be the best 8 days of my life - I met new people every day! You really learn how amazing old people are when you put them on bikes ;-)

I've heard Europe is beautiful for biking. I'd like to get over there, myself.

Hi everyone!

Mia: I love our sparkpage. Weight watcher is a really good program. I wish there were a meeting close to where I live!

Sam: I love biking but I got out of shape... But I should follow your example and get back on it and go for a ride. We have great bike lanes here in Europe!

OPRAMOM: I like your "nickname" I could have had the same one!

H20Showskier: You seem full of energy.. I like that. Tiny Ballet costumes? Now that's a cool goal!

Stacy: When I saw Stuttgart... I thought oh great someone else from Germany... But no... And good for you to have the motivation... I am on track too and I want to keep it that way!

Hi, my name is Lori. I'm from Sarasota, FL. I've recently lost 40 pounds by counting calories and exercising but got off track this summer. I'm hoping that this site will reenergize me and help me lose another 70 pounds. I'm an avid waterskier and belong to a water ski show team. It's my passion and my main motivator for getting down to my goal weight. I currently ski in the all girl pyramid act but my goal is to be in the ballet line when our winter show season starts in February. They wear teeny, tiny costumes emoticon

Despite my weight, I'm very active. I work out at the gym 5 days a week and ski on the weekends. I also love to eat so there in lies the problem emoticon

I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Sun, Sea and a realy fast ski boat....now that's living!

Sam,

Not to be rude are you female or male? It's a unisex name.

Just was wondering.

Welcome to the group and you can do this, in no time you'll be peddling all over the US ;)

Hi! I think I huddled, but didn't actually introduce myself. My name is Sam, and I'm from Rochester, NY.

My entire weightloss journey began when I hopped on a scale last October to discover that in 2 months, I had gained nearly 25 pounds at my first semester of college. I realized I had to get it off. So I fell in to extrapounds.com by chance, worked my butt off, and got down to where I am now.

I biked the entire state of New York this summer, and now I'm looking at my weight, which has been constant for some time, and fearing the winter. My aim is not only to drop pounds (to improve biking performance) but also to maintain and improve my health so that throughout the winter and the spring, I won't be looking at my summer gear going, "God, why do I do this to myself?"

I hope to see you all around!

Sam

Hi, I'm Laurel (opramum because I sing). I am 53, two young adult children, one of which has boomeranged home after college graduation. She and I are good friends and good and bad for each other. We will eat well or awful, egging each other on.
My hobbies are sewing, reading and belly dancing. I dance at least three times a week and have an active part time job in a latte/coffee shop.
Like many of you, I have lost the same 40 pounds many times. If has gotten so hard to lose that this time when I do it, it needs to be the last time I deal with it.
I want to be a healthier person, a more attractive dancer and maybe someday be able to play with grandchildren.

Laurel

A friend sent me an invitation to this site and so here I am. I am a life time member of Weight Watchers and so will be using both sites. My issue is eating for reasons other than physical hunger, especially at night!

So, I am finally learning how to deal with that. We shall see. Oh, and now I have to figure out how to get to me friend and somehow link to her.

Hi everyone,

My name is Erika & I'm 39 years old, married, no kids (that I know of, LOL!). My husband & I both want to lose 15 pounds & hope to hit our goal by Sept. 30.

We eat mostly wild game (venison, geese, ducks, the odd squirrel), and are hopeless foodies. I'm so happy to have found this site that allows me to better analyze what we are eating; we will always eat game and I simply need to learn better habits with the cheeses, olive oils, wine, etc. that sneak their way onto our plates. :) The SparkPeople nutrition analyzer lets me cut the calories without tiping our lives upside down, so I know we can stick with this plan.

Hi my name is Jenn and I'm 35. I'm a mother, wife, full-time student (I returned to college and am currently working on my B of A in psychology) and i was one of those people that was really thin and never worried bout my weight ..and then i had kids. Now I am not saying it is their fault. My body balance did change though and i am no longer able to eat what ever i want and be thin.
The problem was ... it took my head a lot longer to catch on that i was gaining than it did my stomach to accumulate it. I am really hoping that i can learn to eat balanced and get active. So yeah I will leave it at that and thanks for having me here. emoticon

oh and where do people get those virtual people that have bodies similar to them? I think thats really cool cause i'm not all down with putting pictures of myself up.

Hi. I am a mom of 2: 4 year old girl, 2 year old boy. I am 34 years old and married to a great guy.

I have been 20 pounds overweight for the past 10 years--I have gone up and down with the pregnancies....but I am now ready to take it off for good.

I feel out of control in my life and want to gain control.

DRIKALET-go to your sparkpage and hit edit, while in edit mode there is a series of check of boxes just read and check off what you want to appear, then go to the bottom of the page and you should be able to create your ticker.

Hi All, My name is Darlene, I am 55 years old, divorced but living with a wonderful man, have one sone who lives in NYC. Have decided that it is now time to get my act together and get in better shape. It only gets harder the older you get. Used a web site several years ago and writing stuff down really helped. This site seems great. I have already made one of the recipes. emoticon

Hi, all! I just wanted to introduce myself. I am a busy SAHM with 3 boys, 11, 7 and 5. They keep me busy with hockey, baseball, etc! I also take care of children during the school year and am working myself back into my former teaching career once my youngest is in school. I think this site is wonderful and I am so excited to meet you all and use the tools here to finally get rid of this "baby" weight! emoticon
