I've been MIA for the past few weeks, and finally, today starts a somewhat normal day for me. Finally!
To keep cost of spices, whole grains, oils down, check to see if you have a local bulk food store near you. We have one in Ann Arbor called By The Pound. We buy our CousCous, flours, spices, etc in bulk there and it's half as expensive as the store. Plus you can choose to get smaller amounts, which is great for a budget or if you aren't sure if you like them :) :)
Another way I have learned to get my daughter to eat healthier is by slowly changing the food I give her. She LOVES chicken terriaki. Now we all know how much sodium is in the terriaki sauce! (pardon my spelling). What I started doing is each time lessening the terriaki sauce and adding chicken broth. Now we grill the chicken, put them in the frying pan with a tablespoon of terriaki sauce, cup broth, bring to a simmer, add the broccoli, put on the cover and once the broccoli is cooked it's time to eat. After she eats and compliments the food, I then tell her that I made it Healthier and she's losing weight because she choose healthier foods. It's still hard to get her to eat all the food we eat so I always keep baked chicken in the fridge, pre-cooked frozen nuggets/chicken in the freezer, so if she tries what we made she can say no thank you and make her own. I don't ever punish her over her food choices, but I am in control of what comes in the house. It's just like picking out her clothes - She's free to pick and choose and be in control of what she wears - within limitations. As she gets older that bubble of limitations gets larger so she can make more decisions while we still protect her from really bad ones. Hope that helps!
