lost 1.5 this week, first week on spark people. I'm diabetic so any loss is good.

I've got to create my spark page so I have the wonderful graphics like the rest of you. Oh well, maybe after work. emoticon

DEEJAY55, You are right, a small loss ( although 14 pounds is a great loss) can help us feel so much better. I think eating healthily has a lot to do with that.

I am so happy for you that your daughter is coming in for two week. I know you can hardly wait to see her!

I haven't lost any this last week, but I know I've been a good girl. lol I'll just have to wait and let my healthy eating work at its own pace. I feel so much better due to losing 14 lbs. Amazing what a little loss can do for you. I'm lookin forward to when I lose more.

Have a great week everyone. My daughter, Army Girl, will be home to visit us for two weeks, starting Saturday. I am so happy. She survived a year in Afganistan. emoticon 6 more days

Just got back from a long weekend - didn't do too much damage to my eating plan - but now I'm back in earnest. Congratulations to all those of you who have lost - keep up the great work! To those of you who, like me, are stuck, let's just keep at it!

How can you tell when you've lost a half pound? I'm having trouble seeing when I've lost a lb! What kind of scales do you all use? I have a 30 yr old scale so it's not one of those digitals. Should I get a new scale so I can better see the small weight loss every week? It's hard to get excited looking at dubious results but at least the numbers aren't going up.

I did lose 2 lbs in 2 weeks so I guess that's good even if it wasn't aerobic.I hope it continues. I'm giving myself a year to lose 50 lbs.

.5 a week is ok. That is 26 pounds a year. Gee, if I had started losing that much 3 years ago, think where I would be now. And just think where we could be 3 years from now.....

I say again...I WILL LOSE 1 POUND. I KNOW I CAN AND WILL.

Going slow is good...but it sure does take a lot of patience. I'm losing .5 lb a week...but it adds up.

I use a step on the days I work out my lower body. Can't say that I am too crazy about it, but it works.

I have been out with my grandson in this heatwave at rummage sales looking for collectible cars-- Must be out of my mind!! Maybe I'll sweat off that pound I am so desperately wanting to lose this week!!

Oh Anita, I love step aerobics. I have a step and a video that I just love. I need to bring them out. I been using my treadmill and swimming alot, but I love music and step aerobics are alot of fun. About 12 yrs ago, I lost 40 lbs going to classes, but I blew that and gained it all back, plus more. I was so silly. I felt awesome and had so much energy then. I need to focus and get back on track and NOT blow it this time.

Have a nice Saturday!

what's even more motivating is buying a portable step and doing it to music with a beat- start with a slow song- tkes about 3-4 min then step it up with a slightly faster beat(music of your choice) antother 3-4 min then end with a slow beat. Total 9-16 min. work your way from 1 song to 3 over time.

I did lose 2 lbs in 2 weeks so I guess that's good even if it wasn't aerobic.I hope it continues. I'm giving myself a year to lose 50 lbs.

Keep up the good work! Sometimes the scale just doesn't want to budge but your clothes may fit just a bit better. Don't put all your faith in the scale moving. Keep eating healthy and moving more and one time when you step on that ole scale he will move the numbers down a bit. emoticon

Hi Tamar. I read on SP that it takes 7 minutes of stair climbing to lose 100 calories. That seemed a reasonable amount of time and something I could do indoors at work. You don't need a gym membership or any special clothing or shoes and you don't get sweaty because it is done in short bursts. I started slowly and took one or two flights of stairs and then took the elevator at work and now I can take the stairs all the time. It is now my favorite exercise program.
When I first started, I had to focus on the little things. It took me a month to figure out what I needed to change and to learn what the other choices were that suited me. Drink that water and track your nutrition honestly. You will learn what you need to change a little at a time and make the choices that lead to success. Be patient, it takes a while to figure out what works for you but it is worth it because you want this to last a lifetime.
I made a vow to keep this journey positive and to be enthusiastic about it and that keeps it going for me.

Im not sure what what kind of diet plan you are following GIGI...But I have found that changing the sort of foods your eating helps. If I hit a plateau, I always exercise more often, eat less than usual, and I pick foods very low in fat & calories to jump start me again. I also keep my calorie's on or below 1,200. Don't get discouraged, as that could lead to failure. Glad you dropped by here to vent. I went two weeks, and some have went alot longer than that without losing a lb. Remember that you may be losing inches and not lbs, as fat turns to muscle if you are exercising regularly.

Oh, and thank you below for helping me figure out how to add swimming to my fitness page.

Hugs,
D.J.

I have been trying to keep track of my treadmill mileage on My Fitness page, but I am having trouble figuring out how to add swimming to my fitness. I don't see anything other than cardio, walking/running, strength, etc. I swim at least 3 days a week and want to add this as exercise. Does anyone know how I can do this???

Thanks,

I stayed the same. I only weigh in every 2 weeks so that means no loss in 2 weeks. I decided not to focus on the scale or it's #'s. I feel great and my cloths are loose. I hadn't been excising so I will focus on a min. of 3 walks a week. emoticon

Me_First, I did the same thing. I lost 20 before joining sparks and have lost about 4lbs since. The best is I have not gained. I went through my closet and got rid of all the clothes that were too big or looked frumpy. I'm not going back there. And some of the things that were too tight now fit. What a great feeling. We can do this!!! emoticon

Dear Tamar, that website I gave you might be hard to find- so google a few things like "how many calories to maintain current weight"- a site comes up- you fill in your current weight an height and I think age and amount of activity (i always put sedentary!) Anyway that tells you how many calories it takes to maintain your current weight. Then google " basal metabolic rate" and there will be a site (I think on amer. cancer society) that you fill in again with info and it tells you how many calories your body needs while it's completely at rest (sleeping). Take those #'s for reference. Obviously you know that the calories you're consuming to maintain are too high and the basal calories will be too low. So pick something in between but remember if you want to lose a lb. a week you'll have to cut 500 calories daily (500 x 7 = 3500 calories which = 1 lb of body fat). If you're eating 3000 calories a day and want to lose 2 lbs a wk- you would have to deduct 1000 calories a day and so on. Hope this helps and hope I didn't confuse you. Tell me how you do; I'm here! Love Anita

I did lose 2 lbs in 2 weeks so I guess that's good even if it wasn't aerobic.I hope it continues. I'm giving myself a year to lose 50 lbs.

Well i did find a website that posted where all the BL winners were after a year or so. Almost all had regained a large portion of their lost weight. You're right about the ones that are now in the fitness industry keeping it off. I guess for most of them all the public humiliation and non stop exercise just did not make it into a regular day to day life.

Dear GIGI,
Keep at it and don't get discouraged. The exercise is probably building up muscle and there's weight associated with that. It will eventually show on the scales probably next week. Check your calorie intake. See how many calories your body uses for rest (basal metabolic rate for your weight) and try not to go over 1000 calories from that #. Check out acsevents.org

was discussing BL with a friend while hiking this weekend and her comment was that it seemed to be the ones that started working in the fitness world that seemed to be able to keep off the weight. like becoming a fitness instructor so they were still working out alot of hours.

we also did some walking backwards up a hill similar to one challenge where the contestants had to walk backwards on an inclined treadmill. man was that hard!! I could only do it about 10 steps at a time.

Hey June,
we would all like to lose like they do on the biggest loser however I really would love to see what they go through behind the scenes. I honestly don't know how they can push people that, let's face it, are basically unhealthy, into exercising them the way they do without some sort of medical cataastrophe. Personally I don't think I could do it- the real question is though, do they maintain it without the coaching after the show?

I did lose 2 lbs in 2 weeks so I guess that's good even if it wasn't aerobic.I hope it continues. I'm giving myself a year to lose 50 lbs.

Well hi everyone...I'm back online now since the holiday weekend is over. I'm so proud of myself, as I didn't blow my healthy eating, even though I cooked hotdogs, hamburgers, deer chops, etc, on the grill. I prepared lots of other side dishes and I only ate what I could and only a few bites of things I shouldn't have. hehe. When I weighted in yesterday morning I had actually lost a couple more lbs. I'm so excited. I been swimming in my pool every chance I can. I believe that is whats helping me. If I can't swim, I do walk on my treadmill at least 3 times a week. I should go keep track of my exercise on the Fitness page, but I'm so busy keeping track of my food, that I just don't have time to do that as well.

But anyway, HELLO to our newest member. Spark People is the right place to be.
