I haven't finished the Celtic Solstice. I ought to just make a small lap out of it and get it done. I was not all that fond of Grand Illusion colors but I persevered and it is now on our bed. Finished in record time as well. When I make a quilt that I love, I want to make it big enough for our bed. I now have 3 for the bed. Need one a month and a hanger to hold them. Carol

I am considering it.
I never did finish my last one because it had too much white, and I wish I had switched white
with black prints for black with white prints and had a nice dark quilt that would let the colors pop-and not get dirty so easily.
But I love my Orca quilt and it was so fun to do, so I am considering, will let you know.

I got my borders sew on and I really don't like them but they are on. Now I am going to add a 2.5 inch strip of dark purple around the outer edge to anchor it and get it gone. I will have to go back to Joann's for more fabric but oh, well. It needs this dark purple border. I'm not really liking this quilt but it is nearly done. And it fits my bed. Carol

Still struggling with the border and didn't get very far. It is necessary for me to go to get more fabric. Ran out of purple for the elaborate border I'm constructing. Stupid? Carol

Today I"ll be working on the new border that I've designed for this quilt. Saw it on Facebook and printed off the pics so I can reproduce it. The other border that Bonnie suggested will go on the back, unless I take them apart for the new one. Carol

Still haven't finished. Had to get back to work with clients and details needing to be taken care of. Also had to sew up a baby quilt for the new Granddaughter. I used a panel and outline quilted the cute baby carriages and bottles on it. Turned out cute. Hope to finish it this weekend. Carol

Congratulations on your new grandbaby!!!!

You are so far ahead of me.... I was going great guns a-glory - and even had some quilting done - although on another item when my machine decided to have a nervous breakdown! So - I took it apart (NEVER a good thing! Trust me on that!), cleaned it - and put it back together again - per the instructions. And.... it doesn't work! Honestly I think this thing is bewitched! i can put it together in front of a friend at the quilt shop and it won't work! EVER!
She walks up to it, takes it apart, puts it together the SAME EXACT WAY that I did - and it runs like a dream! The blasted machine does NOT like me! Grrrrr!

so - now I'm trying to get it put together again. and intensely frustrated! THEN I can finish up my Grand Illusion flimsy - and finish the quilting on the table runner for a friend! Until then.... well, let's just say that the garden seeds have been sorted out with many tossed, the house is getting an early spring cleaning, and I've even gotten a strong start on all my paperwork!

Ready for this to be done. I have the entire center completed and sewing on a 1.5" black strip all around. Then addding the yellow brick road fabric I have and then final border. Will have to make a few more of the last border. Or replace it with a solid. Carol

I'll be sewing today. Hubby is working and I am starting the Downton Abbey quilt along. I also have a baby quilt in my future. Little girl born this morning to son and wife! I had not started one as we did not know the sex of the baby and with 3 grandsons and one granddaughter, I am looking forward to sewing pink for a change. Carol

I've been sewing with my dd Wendy (who is in N.B. Canada) on Skype. She did some last minute changes as well re colors (and also had replaced the pink at the beginning with I think purple or lavender because she was totally out of pink!) So far - I've completed clue 3 (1, 2, and 4 were already done!) and now that joins the DONE list! Still not sure about that part of the colors. I think my problem is more the double star image - mostly because my eyes keep trying to turn that into a single star image!

Nevertheless - this quilt is nearly done - and I'm looking forward to completing it. Not sure whether this will be a keeper or donated - but need to wait and see! And, yes, I can see where I would want to make a few changes - were I to do this again (and someday I may - with a different color grouping!) - but nothing re colors being major - just the double star points that drive my eyes nuts!

I've got my blocks laid out, I will post a pic on pictures. I've decided I'm not fond of the center 4 patch of yellow and turquoise so I am replacing it with a solid 4.5 inch square of purple instead. Will make my stars show up more. I looked at the block on my dining room table this morning and it is pretty. Sewing it together. All that work. You might want to decide to not do the center four patches and make it one color instead. Save you some work. Clue # 5 is the final border. Clue 4 is the center 4 patches. It's busy but it will be finished and I might add a solid turquoise border to the mix to make it wider and give us a place to rest the eye. Carol

I saw that! Actually am going to pretend I didn't since dd Wendy had company today and said we can quilt tomorrow - she asked me if I was ready! LOL

Soooooooooo - I think I will finish up the last of clue 3 (just have to slice and re-sew those long strips!)

Ummm - not sure how I feel about it - my eyes tend to go nuts a bit with the pattern. What do you think of it?

I think I'm going to love this quilt! I have all clues done EXCEPT for clue 3! My bad - but have been playing hooky since my last post - and think I will get off VERY lucky if I haven't gained anything!

I DID go to my quilt class - but didn't work on THAT project - worked on pinning a baby blanket instead! Should be cute when done! Would be cuter yet if I could do some sort of continuous line baby blocks and rattles in the spaces between the chains! FTM would be very cute if I could FMQ! So - am debating which walking foot design I'll do - and whether or not I will "create" some new to me walking foot design!

And hopefully I will have step 3 done before the next step on Friday!

Working overtime for 2 weeks has really put me so far behind. I have 1 clue 1 block done, but the HST are done. That's it, but I'll get there, doesn't look like I'll be working much for the next 3 months.

Had to go to facebook to find clue # 5 this morning. it's an easy one. Need to finish up 4 before I start it and still have a bit of 3 left but it is an easy one as well so not worrying. Can't believe I have this much done. I didnt care for Celtic Solstice and gave up on it. Will finish eventuallyl I guess. I think I need to get one of those quilt ladders for the corner of my bedroom to hang my bed quilts on. I have the perfect space for it. Finished up the quilt I was working on for a gift last night around 10:00. Carol

LOL - one of these days I will finish reading messages BEFORE I hit the send button!
Had dinner with son and daughter in law, Evan (my grandson) and Sherri (Lynn's mom) last night - latkes galore - all cooked by my son Nathan (who is a VERY good cook - and makes most of their meals!) Gift giving afterwards - Sherri and I opened our gifts at the same time (same kind of presents) - mugs with pix of Evan - and baby photo albums! LOVED it and nearly started to cry. Today they went to Heather's (Lynn's sister - who can't come until after she has her baby next spring). I was invited, but declined - stayed home and sewed like a maniac! Was nice! Dd Wendy (she and her dh are in New Brunswick, Canada) were on Skype and Wendy and I chit chatted while working on our quilts. She had finished her 4th clue last Saturday, so she was working on her "joy" quilt which is absolutely gorgeous! (BOM sampler style - which she "sized up" to a larger size by adding her own thoughts) She's almost done with it - and will probably finish tomorrow unless she works on Bonnie's instead. Me - I'll be scrambling like mad trying to get some things done on the new clue and hoping I'll find time to work on clues 3 and 4! More tomorrow!

Sewed up 20 of clue # 4 and 3 wrong ones before I had to quit for other things, a party and church. Have almost finished the quilt I'm giving away this weekend. The hand binding went so quickly. At least when Bonnie's next clue comes out, I'll have some of Clue 4 and most of clue 3. Getting ready to go to a movie after a nice Christmas with family and a nap. Dinner afterward at a Fish Market restaurant with SIs and her husband. Hope you had a nice Christmas day! Carol

I have my triangles cut for clue # 4 but set it aside to finish up some Christmas sewing! I have to sew on and hand sew the binding on a large quilt for a gift. Luckily, I won't be giving it until the end of the week so have time. I finished the placemats for my sister and off to sew up the apron and wrap it. Carol

LOL - I'm STILL on clue 3. I did finish pressing everything though! And I will probably do a slice and dice session this evening - and maybe sew up everything. If not - then it will have to wait until tomorrow!

Am excited - I got my bread machine yesterday. No bread yet - but I have the machine - and I will make up some tomorrow! Also got a cookbook (Meals in a jar) that I wanted and I got the Coach Nicole video tape so I can do the exercises while watching! And no, those aren't gifts - unless you count the to me from me part!

Re lot of fabric - yup! Bonnie's mysteries are great for stashbusting! Except that I make mine from scraps - so I haven't really delved into my stash too much! Still, my major goal is to make the entire quilt from stuff I already have on hand - so this includes all the strips, squares and bricks as well as the true yardage!

Wow, Helen, I'm on Quiltville's facebook page as well but there are so many posts I can't keep up with them. I have pics I can send you of what I've finished so far. I think I am going to finish 2 and 3 before attempting 4. I'm half done with 3 and 14 more blocks for 2. Then those pesky HST. I will send you a separate message today. Carol

Your colors sound beautiful! I really hope you post a picture of it or at least email me a picture of it when it is done (and I'll do the same back).

Speaking of OTHER quilting - On Stashbusters.com I've moved up the list again - drat it! Am now #5 and I just know that I'll get stuck being queen unless I get my rear in gear! Am NOT looking forward to being fined - uh, paying my 2 FQ and all if I get caught and don't have something on my list as ready before I hit #1!!!

I do have something ready to quilt though - and do need to work on that - for a change, I even know what and how I want to quilt it! It's just the doing! Worst part is - I truly need to get it done this weekend - because the queen's list (remember I'm one of the ladies in waiting!.....) changes again on Monday! So Bonnie's quilt may have to wait a bit again!

I got sidetracked on Quiltville's FB page yesterday - never did get back to you! LOL

My dd Wendy called this AM to let me know that clue 4 was posted. She sounded truly exhausted - she has chronic fatigue syndrome - and she just plain overdid this past week. Definitely she should have just relaxed and not pushed herself today - but she did! She wanted to work on the new Clue 4 - and did - up to a point, then finally admitted that she was so tired she couldn't really focus any longer and quit for the day.

As for me - I'm still on clue 3. I could easily work on clue 4, but me being me would forever wonder where I put all the clue 3 pieces I didn't do! So I worked on those until my lack of sleep last night caught up with me! I want to get this done before working on clue 4. And clue 4 should be pretty easy. Thank goodness!

Clue # 4 is out and it is the same as Clue # 1 except a different colorway in one corner. Saved all those black squares I did! And Plenty of yellow left. Still have 14 of Clue 2 and 80 of clue 3 left. Carol

Helen, so glad you are on this journey with me. I took a break yesterday and worked on something different. Still have the 14 blocks for Clue # 2 and 80 of Clue # 3. The last clue is super easy and goes very quickly. I am using the same green plaid with plum line through it for the backing and the green. Loving how my colors are blending. I like blending, the way I decorate as well. Have you viisited Quiltville's facebook page. Lots of pics and ideas flowing there. I am pleased I am as far along as I am, seeing how I've been so busy. I have all my clue 2 to press.... STILL! Clue 3 - ummmmmmmmm - you are probably farther along than I am! Esp. since I still have to cut my greens - and I'm not truly sure WHICH of the greens I'm using! Am waiting for dd to come back on line - which hopefully she will do before Friday! I may call her tomorrow to get her opinion!

Neat thing about Bonnie's quilts - since they are scrappy and since they are cut in common sizes used - they don't really go to waste but get re-purposed in another quilt! Have done this before so many times it isn't funny! (also they make great focal points in backings! LOL)

Clue 2 - DONE

My dd who is also doing this and supposedly doing a half quilt.... was extremely tired - and did the entire number of Clue 3 blocks! THEN realized what she had done! Would be no problem - but she will have to go shopping again if Bonnie wants more green (Wendy substituted coral instead of green)! So far I haven't done that (and we will ignore the number of black 2.5 inch squares I cut out for the first clue!

Would have started on clue 3 - maybe later tonight. And I may fuss around with some of my clue 2 blocks which did NOT go together the happiest in the world (color ok - but SOMEHOW I seem to have a problem cutting a straight line - at least on 2 of them! Not awful - but enough to make life interesting! and I have very scant seams there!)

I am making the size Bonnie suggests but will add an additional border to make it more of a queen size to fit my bed! I would like to have a different quilt for each month of the year for my bed! One of the first things I do each morning is to read Bonnie's blog. She posts every day and there is so much information! I've loving clue # 3! Wish I had time this morning but I have an appmt with client and business calls. I'm loving the fabrics I picked. I stumbled onto a green plaid with a purple line through it that really goes well with the colors in the quilt! And I'm using a cream with roses embossed on it for the neutral, all the same. Half scrappy and half planned! The plaid is perfect! Carol

LOL - re no triangles! I'm STILL on clue 2! I will be working on clue 3 tomorrow. My dd was having fits re one of her colors this AM because she suddenly realized that the green she chose was ALMOST aqua - and would blend right in! So now she has chosen an apricot to substitute for the green. Me - my pinks are probably more apricot than pink - but I will probably use the greens I have. If not - I may switch to lavenders (which dd used instead of pinks!) Now that everything is confusing - it should be a striking looking quilt!

Are you making a full sized quilt? Mine will be half sized - and may be sized up to full size anyway - just not sure yet!

How about this ridiculousness! I have had my Viking Sapphire 875 for 4 years and have always used the utility foot for sewing. Today I discovered I had a foot that sews a perfect scant 1/4" seam. Who knew? Now maybe my triangles will come out a little better and not need to be squared off. Especially if I mark the placement and don't guess. Carol

Havent' been able to work on the mystery since Sunday. Clue # 3 is tomorrow and I haven't finished #2 yet but its okay. Maybe I can sew a bit tomorrow or Sunday. Ended up with an appmt to see a client on Saturday, which almost never happens. Whey they call, you go. I'm not all that fond of turquoise and pink/purple but hoping I will enjoy the finished product. Carol

Yesterday, I finished up the last 25 blocks from Clue # 1. Then I measured them to square off and I don't know what happened but they are all a little off and a little wonky! I had a blue tape on my machine measuring the 1/4" and for these, the tape was gone. So I will either have to take these apart or stretch them into submission. I prefer the second option. At any rate, I have lots more on Clue # 2 to sew. These will have to wait. I will be more careful on Clue # 2. Carol

I like the mystery this year as well and I'm glad to have a buddy here on Q & L who loves Bonnie as much as I do. Maybe we can inspire others. I am nearly finished Clue # 1 and have 24 of the blocks done for clue #2. Well on the way with that one too. I have a really busy week ahead so don't know what I'll get done but at least I'm not reallly behind. I like Bonnies stripping methods as well. Although I prefer 2.5" to 2" cuts. Carol

I'm working on Bonnie's Grand Illusion Mystery quilt this year along with my dd (who is in Canada - I'm in MA and we Skype a lot!) Currently I'm doing a half size - mostly to see whether or not I like it (I do!).

I enjoy the small pieces -and actually do have both strips and squares cut in various sizes and "filed" in plastic drawers, etc. My dd also was doing hers - until she and her dh decided they were going to move - and gave me all those she truly was tired of or didn't want (we are talking potato boxes here!!! - several of them!) Needless to say - I'm trying to spend some time each day slicing and dicing my way back to water treading level!

Bonnie's quilts - I have all her books - and have completed a bodacious baby quilt which I gave to my dil for my grandson. I also have completed a flimsy of last year's Celtic Solstice - which I love! Even though the pieced border gave me royal fits!

I also have several Bonnie quilts in my UFOs - and am working on them in various degrees of slowness - along with my 70 and more UFO other quilts! Among these are Tobacco Road, Easy Street, Lazy Sunday, Orange Crush, Jamestown Landing, Smith Mountain Morning, Charlotte's baskets and probably one or two others that I forgot I started.

Why so many? and why so many Bonnie quilts? Uhmmm - I get distracted easily! LOL

regardless - I am in this year's mystery - and really like it so far!

Sew yesterday was the annual sale at the LQS and I ventured over. Was able to buy 9 yds of the perfect green plaid with purple line in it for backing and the green in the mystery quilt. It was $4 a yd, RJR fabric! Bought a few more things of course and if you spent $100, which is not difficult to do in a quilt shop, you got a free mystery bag. That bag was totally awesome! IT was filled with a roll of fat eighths, 2 vintage magazines, one of 22 antique quilts with patterns, several patterns and more. Enjoyed perusing them! Sewing today! Carol

Clue # 2 isn't as tedious as clue # 1. Bonnie has used a constant of yellow and I'm also using a neutral with embossed roses on it. It is cream colored and I have enough for the whole quilt. I love scrappy but I also like constants to neutralize some of the scrappiness. Sewing today while listening to football games! Carol

I am more than half way done with Clue # 1. Hope to be able to sew today and finish it. Or nearly finish as the new clue comes out tomorrow. I am learning several different ways to make HST which is really interesting. Bonnie has a facebook page, Quiltville, and there are thousands of members who offer tips and ways to do things. If you avoid making HST, this is the place to start. At the end of the process you will be an expert! I am loving it as I want to be an expert! What saddens me is yesterday, I was looking through my stash for turquoise and stumbled onto a stack of coordinated fabrics that I could have used to make this quilt. OH, well, maybe the next one. Must clean up to find out what I have. Maybe after the first of the year. Carol

So yesterday I finished 27 broken dishes blocks and 73 more to go with 80 square HST. My sister wanted me to go with Joann's with her and I did not, knowing what would happen. Sure enough, $55 poorer. I did, however, get useful thread, 2 blacks for my stash and 3 cuts for my broken dishes. And some Christmas towels. Carol

The first clue has been published! You can go to Bonnie's blog, click on the Grand Illusion tab at the top, and print out the first clue. It involves making 280 HST units right off the bat. I'm still on the fence about which fabrics to use. I'm throwing out the yellow, white and black version as the patterns are too big for 2.5" HST. You need smaller patterns or solids. I'm leaning toward the scrqppy version she prescribes but using purple instead of pink. I think I'll go this way as I will use lots of scraps and I certainly don't need to buy anything. And pink isn't really my thing. Purple isn't either but if I am going to put it on my bed, purple is a better bet for me. I would love for someone to join me in this venture. I"m committed! Carol

No, there is no charge. And you can take all year to finish it if you want. Uses up scraps or can be a planned quilt. Check out her facebook page, Quiltville. This is her fifth or sixth mystery quilt. I did not finish last years but I vow to do this one and finish it. Not sure if I will use her suggested colors or veer off. Carol

I've planned my quilt with yellow black, white and a bit of lime green rather than using Bonnie's colors. I also have loads of her colors just in case. All stash fabrics. It will depend on what size strips we are cutting with the easy angle ruler. If 2.5 inch, I may go back to her colors. I have this stack of fabrics I bought last summer in Maine and waiting for the right project. Carol

I planned to do one with a Facebook group, but the "clues" were only a week apart, and participants posted pictures of their work in progress so it wasn't a mystery long. I liked it, but it was huge. I am doing one with a quilt guild that is a throw size but got behind when my sewing machine broke down. Perhaps I'll check out this new one to see how time-consuming it looks. I am always drawn by the lure of a new pattern!

Janet, I have never done a mystery quilt, never seem to fit into my time frame. They start when I am away or I will be away for part of them, so I never start. I have only done one swap, and that sure didn't go well and have not seen another one.

Now finish some of those UFO's! LOL

Carol, I hope she does use larger strips. I won't be able to do the quilt, but will look at what you all have done. I have a MSQC pattern I want to make for my daughter for Christmas. So that will keep me busy.

I think the pieces will be larger, too. I haven't collected my fabrics yet, but am planning on doing this one.

I'm thinking Bonnie will use larger pieces this year as she is suggesting we use the 6.5 inch easy angle ruler. Since there is another ruler smaller, I'm hoping she uses mostly 3.5 inch strips and not 2.5 inch. I will keep you posted. Just put Smith Mountain Morning on our bed. So loved doing it. Carol

Bonnie does to many small things for me. I just don't like working with all smalls.

I've done 2 Bonnie mysteries, and love them. The tops are done for Easy Street and Celtic Solstice. But quilting?....I was quilting a baby quilt on my brother last night, and the stitch tension is messed up I get random loopies about every 6-12 inches....??? ARGH!

Bonnie has posted the requirements for her new mystery quilt to start next month. I am deviating from her color selections to use fabrics I purchased in Maine last summer, been looking for a pattern. If it doesn't work out, I will go back to her colors which I has stacks of anyway.
