I met a very interesting woman today. She runs a "hang-out" for local teens in one of the city's poorer districts. One activity she started with them is to plant a vegetable garden on the premises. At the beginning of the season, a local eco group teaches them how to plant sustainably and organically, and a local chef comes in once a month to give the teens cooking lessons with the produce they grow.

When I asked if she had attended the march, her answer was a resounding "Of course! And many of our kids came with me. I teach these kids about the evils of corporate food and pharma as much as I possibly can!" She added that she had started a similar garden with the kids at the neighbouring elementary school a few years ago and that the school uses the produce to supplement their lunch programmes.

It's so important to fight the current food industry today, but let's make sure that the next generation is even stronger to stand against these corporations.

This issue has really SPARKED a fire in me and I'm just now learning how fragile our food sources and the growing foods crops industry really is! My intuition says that we as a smart people, would not let this get too much farther out of hand , before something or someone, puts what is going on, out in mainstream media venus and figures out a way to stop it. It just doesn't make any sense to be spending so much money on defending ourselves from terrorists, only to kill ourselves from the inside out instead!!! emoticon emoticon You know what technology is???? ONE BIG DISTRACTION!!!! from everything that is real and important.

It was an initiative in last November's election:

"California voters rejected Prop 37, which would have required retailers and food companies to label products made with genetically modified ingredients.

Millions of dollars, mostly from outside of California, were poured into campaigns both for and against Prop 37. But the donations that came in weighed heavily in favor of Prop 37's opponents.

Companies like Monsanto and The Hershey Co. contributed to what was eventually a $44 million windfall for "No on Prop 37," while proponents were only able to raise $7.3 million, reports California Watch.

Still, despite the lopsided campaign funding power, voting on Prop 37 was relatively close. As of this story's publish time (98.5 percent of precincts reporting), Prop 37 was able to gain 47 percent of California's vote.

Opponents of Prop 37 blitzed California with campaign ads on a variety of different reasons GMO labeling would be costly for consumers and punitive to businesses like small farms and mom-and-pop stores. The anti-Prop 37 movement also gained endorsements from prominent publications like the Los Angeles Times and the San Francisco Chronicle -- not necessarily because the newspapers were against GMO labeling, but because of the way the ballot initiative was written.

Meanwhile, Prop 37 found supporters among celebrities, the restaurant world and food movement activists like Michael Pollan. In a piece for the New York Times, Pollan hailed its potential for igniting a nationwide debate about the industrial food complex:

If California had passed Prop 37, it would have been the first state in the U.S. to pass GMO labeling legislation. China, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, countries in the European Union, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, India and Chile are just a few of the nations that already require GMO foods to be labeled.

While on the campaign trail in 2007, President Barack Obama promised to label GMO foods if elected."

And of course he hasn't...

I don't recall that Gov. Arnold was for or against GMO labeling, he wasn't exactly an enivornmentalist, but thought that green energy would provide jobs and an economic boost for the state.

***CHINA*** has GMO labeling, & we don't? emoticon

I would have thought the same thing about CA.. so much of the country's foods come from your state, I'm thinking wine, olive oils things like that, and if it can't get passed there, where can it be passed???? I thought ARNOLD was already out of there last Nov. but I'm not sure of the timing. Was there a new Gov. in Jan of this year??

With so many politicians being fed from the pockets of Monsanto, the chances of getting GMO labeling are pretty slim, IMHO.

Am I recalling the wrong info, or was the CA legislation passed, but Gov. Arnold (can't spell his last name) vetoed it?

CA voted on mandatory GMO labeling last November, & it was defeated. emoticon I was sure it would be passed--after all, California is the state where we take such things very seriously. I assume it will be tried again, but how soon?

I don't know about elsewhere, but here, there was nothing in the news leading up to the march, and only a couple of small stories about the march itself. Disappointing.

Just got back an I am frozen to the bone! It's miserable outside!!

Reports are that we only had around 1000, a number that I'm sure would have been higher had the weather been better.

The organizers had planned a picnic at the end of the march. I don't know what they ended up doing, I just went home to warm up.

I signed up for my local march (even though it wasn't very easy to figure out how to sign up!) I have no delusions that marching will force or encourage Monsanto to change its evil ways, but at least I will have stood up & been counted.
