Hi George,

Padded cycling shorts are a "must have" item for comfort. However, if your saddle is the wrong width, shape or tilt - padded cycling shorts will not solve your sore backside problem.

A saddle that is too narrow does not support your sits bone,

Getting the saddle width right is about 50% of the battle. Getting the saddle shape right is another 30% of the battle. The last 20% is getting the saddle height and tilt correct. Although counter-intuitive, a soft saddle is usually uncomfortable on road and mountain bikes. A soft saddle tends to interfere with blood flow. On a cruiser bike, a soft saddle is fine. On a mountain bike, a soft saddle is torture!

For mountain biking I use a 155mm Specialized Phenom Expert.
For road biking I use 155mm Specialized Romin Evo Pro.

This Romin Evo Pro cost $240,which is more than the average "Big Box" discount store bike.

I did a lot of trial-and-error with other great saddle brands including WTB, Fi'zi:k, Selle Italia and Ergon. I have a lot of spare saddles!

You have received great advice from Don on the Louis Garneau Men's Fit Sensor 2 Padded, Breathable, Compression Bike Shorts. At $80 US (65.50 Pound sterling). Louis Garneau sells high quality stuff.

If you want to get a lot more saddle time, and are willing to spend a few more pounds, I recommend cycling bib shorts.

These Pearl Izumi Pro Bibs cost $275 (225 Pounds) but are worth every penny for longer distances.

Good Luck, Bruce

You bet I do! My favorites are Louis Garneau, and Pearl Izumi.

Don is right about the seats. Those padded saddles rub and irritate more than anything else. A saddle is a very personal fit and some bike shops will allow you to try out some before you purchase one.

Absolutely recommended! I am a keep-it-simple kinda guy and I fought the recommendation of cycling shorts for a while after taking up cycling several years ago. I'm like "why would I want to buy a special pair of shorts just for cycling? Wouldn't any old shorts do? Can't my butt just toughen up?"

Well our butts definitely need toughening at the beginning of the season, but they need a helping hand too! I gave in after putting up with enough pain, lol.

Louis Garneau is a great brand for bicycle shorts. Resist the urge to put padding on your bicycle saddle or getting a cushy bicycle saddle as I've heard far and wide that this won't work. A good saddle is important though and although I've tried a bunch, I feel that Brook's saddles are the best.

Here is a link to the bike shorts I use:

Happy trails! :-)

I would recommend padded shorts, made specifically for male or female. Proper sitting and proper posture on the saddle may alleviate any discomfort on the sitz bones.
