Thank you! I used to go to a really good banking advice place. It helped me get a really good start toward paying off debt. Amazing what you can do when you really focus in on it.

Goals are for financial stability. Lost my job at 49, and this far down this road (now taking care of elderly parents, unable to obtain a job in my field because of being both overqualified and "too old" or too experienced. My income is pretty restricted, but I am VERY lucky to have anything at all.

So my goals: (1) generally save money, for future. specifically save at least one year's income. (2) Save enough money to afford going to several dog camps for training each year. (3) pay off debt, write to two organizations to make arrangements to start paying off the debts incurred when I was "downsized" my job.

Achievements so far: met with a really good financial planner who assures me all my 401K & other retirement savings will be sufficient. Not luxurious, but sufficient into the day thereof. What an answer to prayer!

I would love to take a vacation to some place warm next Feb. for my birthday so that's what I'm going to use my saving jar/savings account for. I am also trying to work out a plan to get out of debt in three years by 2017. I want to retire in 10 years also so working on a plan for that as well. We do have a fairly good pension plan at work but it won't kick in till 65 so I have to figure out a way to manage the 5 years between 60 and 65. I know it's a lot but a step at a time.

I have a lot of reasons right now for the savings jar. I will soon have a new grandbaby. It's my first, so that means we have no equipment, clothes, etc. I am planning a trip with friends in January. In April, I will be going to Mexico with my daughter, my niece and two great-nieces. I'd also like to move.

God grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I use my savings jar to save for vacation spending. It's getting harder to save this way because I'm using my debit card and rarely carry cash so I have less than what I've had in the past but it's fun to see how much adds up.

Enjoy Life! This is not a dress rehearsal.

I have started with $31 in $1 coins that I have it is in a red post box that I have on my desk. It will be interesting to see how much money in $1 coins fills up my red post box at the end when it is all full up. You always seem to have a spare $1 floating around in your purse you won't miss. Especially if you talk yourself out of buying something you do not need in order to have the $1 for those savings. emoticon

Happy Saturday Everyone! I am so glad I stumbled upon this team. I am on my third day of saving $1 a day and am undecided about my goal. I will put some prayer on it. My son is getting married in Feb. in NY and I live in FL. I am sure my goal will be related to that event. I have decided since reading the posts to save an additional dollar for each day I exercise.
Have a great weekend.

I like both of your ideas. emoticon

Having read this, I have decided to put $1.00 aside for completing a task which I do not care to do. The task may vary, but I will make it specific for a given period of time. It likely could become habit. emoticon Another team has a challenge in which each Spark point counts as a penny. I have a virtual record, and plan on using these pennies to buy books for my nook.

On a larger scale I will now reward myself $1.00 for completing my bills for the month,
$1.00 for filing and scanning receipts and documenting on register, and $1.00 for documenting on budget. This should be a total of three dollars by the end of the month.
All bills not due at the same time so the process must continue for this length of time. emoticon

Teresa

Savings for rainy days - so far so good - I started to put additional $5 in a jar when I have saved $1/day for 14 days. I figure that is a motivation to reward myself.
CELTICMELODY that is a great idea to pay yourself for doing laundry. I am doing laundry now and I will start paying myself for this chore as of today. emoticon you always have great ideas for savings! emoticon

Another tip I heard that I liked was to pay yourself everytime you do laundry. Pretend your laundry is coin operated and put $2 in a jar in your laundry room every time you do a load of laundry. When jar is full, take to bank and deposit in your savings account.

Another one you might be interested in reading is on Ramit Sethi's iwillteachyoutoberich.com. He had series of posts on his blog he entitled "Save $1000 in 30 days" which I thought was a pretty good read.

Here's the link: www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/blog/a
nn
ouncing-the-save-1000-in-30-days-chaR>llenge/

You gotta love a guy that not only tells you to pack a lunch every day but spells out how to do it cheaply. AND, who doesn't overlook things like automating your bills so that you don't get late fees and your credit score goes up. Or, my favorite: Remember a few weeks ago when we were paying MAJOR bucks on gas? His suggestion: set aside the difference between what you paid then and what you are paying now for the next time gas goes up - and it will. Head slap! Wish I'd htought of it sooner.

Thanks CELTICMELODY, for the link . I am going to check it out . That makes real good sense for someone with lower income than the average person. I have a long list of things I want to save up for and if I set the emergency fund too high I will never get started on the other things on my list. Thanks again. Polly

$500 to start.

Liz Weston of MSN Money wrote an article entitled "Why you need $500 in the bank"

Here's the link: www.money.msn.com/how-to-budget/why-
yo
u-need-500-dollars-in-the-bank-westoR>n.aspx

She suggests starting by keeping an extra $100 in your checking account. (This may take awhile. It did for me.). Then, start funneling money into a savings account until you reach $400. Reason? $400 will cover quite a few emergencies. And, DON'T touch it unless it is a real emergency (heat went out, car needs work). Plus, $400 will help you stay away from using credit cards in emergencies. I love the symplicity of this because $1000 seemed unattainable but $400-$500 seems doable. That's roughly $42/mo for a year.

I read another article by her called the $0 emergency fund that talked about why it is so hard for families to save 6 months worth of income. Think about it. Say your income is $1200/month. Six months worth of income is $7200. If you only have $50/month to spare. It would take you 144 months or 12 years to save 6 months of income. (Only 72 months or 6 years to save 3 months worth of income.) But, there are things you can do like stock piliing 2 weeks worth of non-perishable groceries while accumulating your $500 emergency fund. Once you have your $500, then you can stretch to $1,000.

Our church does something every year they call "eat 5 days on beans, rice, and water" where we are encouraged to donate the money we save during those 5 days to the local food pantry. You could donate the money you save to your emergency fund. Or, have a "no buying" month where you don't buy anything but food, transport, and rent. And, put the rest in savings. This helped me save a couple hundred.

I have not been a member of this team for long, but I quit smoking 7-25-2011, changed my daily SparkGuy's Savings Jar from the $1 a day to $5 a day, retroactively from when I joined this team. By the time my two eye surgeries happen in September, my Spark savings will pay my medical co-pays and for some of the medicine. After that expense, I plan to use the saved bucks for some fun, maybe a cruise...I do live in cruise-central.

A weekend getaway fund. When I have enough, I want to surprise my husband with a weekend away that will not impact our regular budget.

I love that the savings jar lets you congratulate yourself on some small step you take each day - a good choice. That being said, my big goal is just to finally build that emergency fund and maybe save up to get rid of my corolla and get a minivan instead. The corolla was a good choice when I was fresh out of college because it was reliable and affordable. I hoped to drive it into the ground but I now wish I had a different car to better meet my needs. Do I want to change cars enough to get rid of a fully paid off car with only 55k miles on it and add a car payment to our budget?? Not yet, but it's still one of the goals we're saving for.

Spark helped me reach my goal weight so hopefully it can also help me get my budget on track :)

It's more fun to give your money to yourself via saving rather than throwing it out to everyone else. Good luck with your new business!

Now I am losing weight with spark people, and now i have started my own business, I am going to literally have to cut off - go cold-turkey no more crap for me!!

I too have those same addictions, and I had a third. It was alcohol and by doing the 12 steps I have not had a drink in over 18 years. Now I need to take steps to help control these two addictions!!!

I have tried to save money before but for various reasons it has not worked. I just joined this club today. I thought this would be a good way to save because as I track my other goals I have to track this as well and can instantly see my progress. It is motivating to see all my goals working and coming together and gives me momentum.

I have a giant plastic Bud bottle that stands about 3' tall and have been putting my change in every day for about 6 months. It is to help my daughter with college which she starts in September--I'm so proud of her!

I have battled two addictions all my life -- food and spending. I'm in remission with the food - lol! But I'm here to master the spending. The group support helps and I find it very motivating and inspiring! To the woman who is saving for her husband's operation -- I'm humbled! Put's it perspective that's for sure.

I'm saving to teach myself 'self-discipline' - and hope that jumpstarts my eating habits as well.

Do it, NOW!

Introductions can be made on the INTRODUCE YOURSELF FORUM.

One of the most important parts of this is to make sure you pay attention to the math so we don't get off track with our running total. We work only in whole dollars so please round up or down to the nearest dollar - thanks!

Since we don't have a currency calculator, you just do a rough translation from your currency to US dollars when you post (at least for the running total)? Here is a link to SPARKGUY's "Introduction- Reasons for the Savings Jar Club". He lists some of the original "rules" also. HAVE FUN.
