100 Days of Weight Loss is a great book! There is also a great Spark Team here based on it. I still use many of the lessons.

Yes, it everything is good in moderation.
Unless you are allergic to it.
I heard Linda say: You gave yourself permission to eat something.
When it is not a good day or a good food.
Just write why you ate it, how you felt.
And to make a plan up to keep you from doing it again.
I like her book. I am on day 16 of 100 More Days of Weight Loss.
Hope you are all well. Have a good day. Holly

I really do so much better when I don't say I CAN'T have something.

It seems to give me peace of mind.

Have a great weekend my friends

Thank you!

As long as I know in my head that I CAN choose to have it (sort of Intuitive Eating ish) I am in a mentally better place. Tracking honestly on my WW app is what works (for me) and it just works as far as weight loss (again, for me).

Sugars good during the day. Mind begging for comfort carbs, but I am staying under 45 per meal.

My mornings have been very high for me, 114. Usually they are 92-100. I think it is stress and my cherry, walnuts, ff cottage cheese, and whipped cream dessert (all measured out as I follow WW).

But I really like having it... sigh, I will have less of the carbs / sugar and more nuts to see if that helps at all.

Virtual hugs to all!

Krys, That sounds exactly like the article I read. Iím not gonna eat the whole bar Because I realize all the sugar thatís in it. I plan on eating maybe two squares a day which is about half an ounce. I bought one 70% cocoa bar and one 85% cocoa bar. I chose a high-quality one with the fewest ingredients.

If you buy quality dark chocolate with a high cocoa content, then it is actually quite nutritious.

It contains a decent amount of soluble fiber and is loaded with minerals.

A 100-gram bar of dark chocolate with 70Ė85% cocoa contains (1):

11 grams of fiber
67% of the RDI for iron
58% of the RDI for magnesium
89% of the RDI for copper
98% of the RDI for manganese
It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium

Of course, 100 grams (3.5 ounces) is a fairly large amount and not something you should be consuming daily. All these nutrients also come with 600 calories and moderate amounts of sugar.

Below is a great blog about chocolate. Dark chocolate can even help with insulin resistance.

I have decided to start eating dark chocolate. It may help with my mood when I find myself in some type of negative mood whether it be boredom, discouragement, sadness, etc. if I eat one square of dark chocolate bar a day it will also keep me from craving sweets. This can be my treat for the day along with my herbal tea that I drink occasionally.

That was what I was thinking too. Someone mentioned it to me in another group so I figured I would pick the brains here too!

I have been counting carbs, not net carbs.

Thanks!

I count all my carbs - I found that using Net carbs was "just playing a game for me" and avoiding the truth of what I was eating - I do value the fibers but I don't let them affect how many carbs I am supposed to be eating

Hi,

Been a long time since I posted here, sorry! I started focusing on weight loss and sadly pushed my other health concerns aside. Well, I only have one body and need to take care of it!

Question: When counting fruit like apples and bananas.. do you use net carbs or just count them as is. What works for you?

Thanks in advance for your info!

Thank you for the link. I will try to work on it tonight when have more time. What I wanted was to change the nutrition guidelines to the correct amount for prediabetes. I don't really want meal plans, just the correct amounts of the nutrients to eat. Is that where I would go for that info?

I will check it out later, but just wanted to make clear what I am looking for.

I am a bit frustrated. I have lost 47 pounds in the last year, about 27 of it since Sept, and I am exercising regularly. My sugar was down in Sept and now it is higher again.

I suspect that I might have what my younger brother has had for years, and that is Metabolic Syndrome. I seem to have all of the markers for that and because he has it I am thinking that is it. My gp is kind of a flake, so if I can't get things going in the right direction soon, I am going to check in to going to a specialist.

But, thought I would try to see if I could get it under control on my own first.

I really appreciate your effort and your time. thanks again.

Chatting more as I think through some medical decisions and changing activity levels to see if I can prepare for potential knee replacement. Diabetes affects surgery potential, I need to loose more weight, I need to strengthen muscles supporting my knee area to prep for replacement and then there is the celiac problem thrown in the mix so no gluten/wheat in fact, I eat pretty much grain-free. And then there is the 70 year old rebellious spirit that wants her sweets, chocolate and other favorites... setting goals and plans - now to work the plans.

Glorious Thanksgiving weekend for us - kids [pregnant daughter and son-by-love] here at noon Thursday , feast at 3. Friday we did a jewelry party so friends and extended family could come by and see the paparrazi Jewelry daughter sells and visit and see "preggo girl" . then they headed back to the city at 10 today but it was so wonderful to have them here- our first Thanksgiving of then coming "over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house" because they wanted to be here!! Lots of talk time and loving and memories. laughed so much!!!

Had good choices available for both diabetes and celiac diets and used pretty good portion control - blood sugars stayed within limits and good this morning with only up 1 pound. Tomorrow is Dec 1 and advent begins in our church family.

Thank you for this encouraging and active SP team. Sorry I'm not here very often. We have this preD on-again-off-again attitude at our house. (Which really means that DH tends to conveniently forget he even has preD and I am concerned but not going to be a nag about it.) So, there we are. I'm the cook, so I DO have some control. Not much, tho.
With his DRs, it's been a casual mention of preD....but, never suggesting that we need to take home blood glucose readings. Do they normally suggest that, or is this something one has to just decide on their own?

BRAVELUTE: Your question of how prediabetic sparkers celebrate is a good one. It's a good question for all sparkers. DH & I have a diff of opinion about that b/c I don't want to make my celebrations about food.
When I joined SP, I decided to choose a nice reward for myself once I'd lost the weight I needed to. I chose something that I really wanted but that I wouldn't ordinarily want to spend the $$ on. I saved up our bottle return $$ (of all things, as DH had quite a soda habit and we lived where all soda/beer bottles/cans are worth 10 cents.) At the time, there was this embroidered denim I wanted that was $60.
Maybe your reward could be spending the day at a special place you've been wanting to go to, or getting a certain item for your house (or yourself) that you've wanted, visiting that friend you've been meaning to visit, .... anything.
Not everything has to be expensive. The one I chose was b/c it was something for me to look forward to after losing nearly 50# and I had many months to save the change.

Went to doctor yesterday and he said A1c was 6.7 and blood pressure still up. He gave me 3 months to try and get it down by losing weight before he puts me on meds. I am determined to give it my all and lose the weight so I can bring those numbers down.

Mondaylins, my problems with my home and outstanding permits from 2005 which the previous owner gifted me but failed to disclose definitely generated stress. I'm sorry to say, no weight lost. I guess I'll have to do that the old fashioned way.

How do prediabetic sparkers celebrate? Because I just received word that the permits are now CLOSED. I don't want my celebration to continue the weight gain!! In the past this would be a 2 donut day. That's what got me to the PD team in the first place. So I guess a good long walk this evening would be a better plan. Take along my I pod and play a peppy play list.

Sometimes stress brings weight loss instead of gain. I know it's not the overall plan or best way for losing weight to happen. But, it is what it is.
Like any homeowner, things go wrong & repaires are sometimes needed. The repairs one can't do themself are the most troubling. Won't bore you with details, but, we're in this a week + now and I'm down 3 lbs, DH is down 11 lbs.
I'm hoping we keep our downward momentum and continue on the correct & healthy way of doing things.

DH had a good result at his 6 mo check up. Blood glucose & cholesterol are not to where we want them, yet, but they're going down in the right direction. DR didn't prescribe anything at this point just to encourage him to keep working at it as he's been doing.

He's swimming everyday. Less resistance against necessary food changes.

Stopped in to say hi - wanting to get more active on this team for food choices and encouragements -
I am still really struggling with the ice cream monster - I LOVE it and struggle to use portion control or even good brands to keep the carbs low.
Will be looking for your hub's test results and pray he will be willing to work with dietary changes and not have to do meds

DR scheduled a 6 month check for DH, which is this week. She scheduled it like that since he was in the pre-D range again. Went for bloodwork last week & this week will get results. I'm anxious to see how it is and see if we need to make more changes. These kinds of changes aren't easy and are frequently scoffed at by unwilling participants. emoticon

Congrats Linda! I can tell you're super excited as you should be.

I miss being here but it's been kind of busy so far for us and I can't sit at the computer much due to pain in my knees.

The box my glucose meter was in didn't survive our last plane trip so I found a pretty bag in the toiletry section of Walmart that holds all my supplies. I keep a small notebook and pen too to track my numbers and other info. I saw a post here that said something about a tracker but a notebook is simple to take to the doctor.

I'll try to get back here more often, it helps me stay motivated.

Just a fun chat time - not related to pre-diabetes - just personal joy ...Our daughter announced to the families that they are pregnant - I have known since Thusday when the Dr confirmed their home test but now the whole world can now - they knew there was to be a family gathering on hubbys side of family today and chose to wait the few extra days to tell. but they wanted to tell me they heard their baby heart beat on the 5th anniversary of my getting my heart stents - so now a double reason to remember May 23rd for always. This is our sweet daughter that waited for the right man til she was 37, he is perfect for her and also never married - now baby on the way - Happy Momma!!!

Hello everyone.
My blood work in November showed Pre-Diabetic numbers and again in February. A1C.

Since then, I have been seeing a dietician, learning portion size, shopping mindfully, and working on exercise both for my heart ( triglycerides and cholesterol and A1C., mistake, itís the LDL number that is out of range! )
I plan to get my fasting blood work for Complete Metabolic panel including the Total cholesterol, the A1C test was not included on the prescription.( Cardio Dr.) etc. this Thursday as I have follow-up appt. next Wed. 05/16.
Iím interested in what ideas for breakfast? The A1C test was not included on the Prescrtion lab work ( on re reading).

PERDONATO - thanks for stopping by. I'm in GA after living in the NE, including Maine, for many years. Indeed, not having to shovel snow is wonderful! Daily tips are posted on the team wall, so scroll through some of the past ones and find ones that help you.

Hello everyone. I'm new here so thought I would drop by to say hello and get to know others on the team. I just found out I'm officially pre-diabetic yesterday which wasn't the best news, but I'm here to try and fix that!
I'm retired and now live in Florida. I'm originally from Maine. Sure enjoy being away from the cold and the snow! Looking forward to getting back to swimming. That is our major form of exercise now since my husbands leg gets numb when we walk. Not fun for him! We have a pool here in our community so as soon as it warms a bit more and the threat of daily rain goes I'll be in!! Hope everyone is having a great day.

Good Evening Pre-Diabetic Sparkers,
I returned from my trip with my sister on Weds., Feb. 27. It was a great trip and I can't thank enough my sister for planning the whole thing for us. Now she's trying to figure out how much I owe her!!

The Plane trip from Baltimore to Scottsdale, AZ was longer than I had expected and my ears started killing me when we made our descent. I was chewing gum but it didn't seem to matter. It's been a long time since I was on a plane and I forgot how my ears react. We had 3 days in Scottsdale watching the Arabian Horse show, going to a museum and the Taliesin West house built by Frank Lloyd Wright. We also had lunch one day with a member of another Spark team that I am on. That was a treat. I had never met her before.

The trip to the Grand Canyon was great but there were also several inches of snow on the ground. It gave the Canyon a different look. I had never been there before so I was amazed by it.

Our next stop was a long drive to Riverside, CA to stay with our first cousin. His wife just died the day after Christmas but he was happy to see us.

The plane trip home was uneventful, shorter and my ears didn't hurt on descent.

The rest of this past week I've been getting back to my routine. Not quite there yet. I tried not to eat too badly while away from home but I also didn't get much exercise.

Glad to be home even though it was a great trip. We had rain and snow in Scottsdale and have rain and snow here at home. Not much difference in temps so that wasn't an issue. We did have one day in Riverside, CA that was "warmish".

BONNIE - I think we have a lot of good company.

SUNSHINE - I LOVE your post! So true! Read somewhere that those aren't wrinkles; they are wisdom lines!

Bonnie
I, too, turn 70 in March and I find it best not to think of age as growing old but growing wiser.

Do you remember when you were in your teens and you thought a person who was over 40 old?

As my hair turns gray, I thank God for the blessings I have had throughout the years. I now know what I like and dislike and I have modified what I can and can no longer do (like crawling up a ladder, jogging, running). When I look into the mirror I see lines and wrinkles but I look at them as evidence of where smiles and laughter have been.

Richard Gere once said ...do not regret growing old, it is a privilege denied to many. Act as you always have, your younger friends enjoy you the way you are!

@Krys - That's nice to know. I have nothing against the younger generation (we were all there once) but at this time in life I'm trying to figure out what my place is and how I'm supposed to act and feel. Most of my friends are a lot younger than me (I could be their mother) and it helps to know people my age and see how they are handling this new challenge (of growing old). Thanks for letting me know you are "with me".
