Post any outdoor adventures you have this winter. Maybe your stories can lighten up the winter blues and give us some winter activity ideas.

Sunday 4/18 My kids and I went to a State Park to do some hiking. One of the trails had 140 steps. Nice view of the river and the fisherman fishing for trout. Hiked, took pictures and visited the Nature Center. Kids loved it. We had a great day. Hubby had to work, so he didn't get to enjoy the day with us. emoticon

oh man, yesterday i skipped class (which was bad) to go snowboarding and it was awesome! the snow was perfect up here in montana after it snowed the day before and it was sunny and beautiful. i have never gone to a ski area and just gotten a map and gone off by myself but it was great and i ended up challenging myself a lot because i went on harder runs than i have done before.

i hope you are all getting out there and enjoying the outdoors! have a great day.

Well, my home (Durango, CO) has around six feet of snow that is a little hindering to outside activities unless you are really into winter sports, and I can't ski or snowboard to save my life. However, I have some snowshoeing planned for tomorrow, and it'll burn a lot of calories!

However, I AM planning my adventures for this summer. I have a few mountains in mind that I want to summit and a few multi-day backpacking trips to plan. There are also some gorgeous 4WD adventures in the area that I hope to drive this summer - that is, if the snow ever melts. Hopefully all the moisture means our wildflowers will be phenomenal this year!

I was really pleased to discover that my home in Richmond is very close to the James River Park. There are all of these trails for hiking and biking right outside my door! And a great view of the James River. I can even cross it on foot on the Nickle Bridge and I am in a big park with jogging trails, a nature center, lakes, etc. I am looking forward to discovering the diversity of birds and wildlife that are in this area. I hae seen chipmonks (we don't get those in Houston), and lots of woodpeckers, hawks and song birds. It is so pretty right now with all of the icicles and snow. I am loving it! emoticon

We actually got snow [more than flurries] here in the deep south, about 5" :)

I had a snowball fight with my SS while we were feeding the animals. Then my neice & her family came down [they only got 1/2"]. We build 3 awful looking snowmen, made snow angels, had several snowball fights & went for a long walk in the snow. After all that I shoveled snow off of the doorsteps so it wouldn"t freeze overnight & be dangerous. emoticon emoticon emoticon

My outdoor adventures this week have been bundling up for work. Had to walk around the job site several times, including one day that I stood out in the 4 degree F wind chill for a couple of hours. We were testing a pump in an open tank and had trouble with frozen pipes. FUN! But I walked a lot (appx. 2 miles a day) and surprisingly, stayed pretty warm.

DH and I have enjoyed three hikes this month, including a 3-hour hike in a local state park yesterday. One of my goals in 2010 is to do more hiking and canoeing, and I really hope to get out on my bicycle more.

This afternoon I'll be working on some garden beds, better take advantage of this warm weather before the rain comes!

I went on the greatest hike before I went back to school. It was about ten miles long altogether and I was happy that I could keep up with my family, whom are all in much better shape than I am. It was in a beautiful chaparral area and the scenery was constantly changing, each as beautiful as the next. I wish that I could do it again right now but I am three states away and in the snow. i will have to find something else outdoorsy to do.

hope you are all having lovely outdoor adventures! emoticon

Va. is a beautiful place. I'm sure you will enjoy it big time. Welcome back!

Today my Hubby and I drove out to the ranch where we board our horses. We took two of our dogs with us. I spotted a Sparrow Hawk, and a Red Tail Hawk on our way over, and back. We saw Ducks swimming in Lake Hughes. Our horses were so happy to get out of their stall and run...They are so much fun to watch. After they got in a good run, my Hubby and I took our dogs for a walk on a deserted dirt road that was close by. We walked a mile. Could have gone further, but we saw kids on dirt bikes up ahead, and I knew Sarge would be nervous by the sounds, so we turned around a head back. Alice loves the horses, and she jumped into the arena where our horses were.(she was on a leash, Hubby had to jump into the arena as well hehe) My Horse, Buddy, wasn't sure if he liked the idea of Alice standing by him at first. He had a bad experience with a little dog nipping at his heels in the past, so when Alice went over to him, to get a sniff, he put his ears back. I told my Hubby "you better move Alice" then Buddy sniffed Alice, and decided she was ok. She just stood there as calm as can be, so I think in the long run, he will learn to trust her. Our other horse, Star, could have cared less the dogs were there. We had nice weather today, but tomorrow night, and the rest of the week we will have a few storms pass our way, with lots of rain. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi, gals! I returned from mountainous northwest China to boring, flat Houston, TX in October. I am sorry that I have not been inspired to write anything since I have been back. I am planning on moving to Richmond, VA and am looking forward to living in a place with 4 seasons and that is close to mountains and snow. This will be the first time for me to live in a place where I can experience a lot of snow (it was pretty dry where I lived in China). I am hoping to try snow shoeing for the first time in my life. I'll let you know if I ever have the opportunity. emoticon

My only outdoors adventures have been walking & hunting. I have seen some spikes & does. No legal bucks, though. I could have gotten a doe last week, but she was standing in front of the 4-wheeler.
Maybe I'll have better luck in 2010.....

I haven't had much adventure outdoors today but I was outside a long time watching some guys cut some tree limbs and a couple of trees. Very exciting and I was shivering so burning calories--yea! But the old workout will be at the gym this afternoon--the wind is too strong at 35 degrees for me! I might even put on long pants to go to the gym.

I do love the Spring!! I do enjoy the winter, especially when there is snow or ice on the trees - its just making myself get out there. Once outside, even if I am just shoveling snow, I love it.

Hey all,
I have been lagging on the outside time, and missing it a lot, but the last two days the sun was shining and i spent a lot of time walking....very carefully as it was still frosty and slippery. There were lots of good birds spotted today as an added bonus!

I took Henley the Hound for a nice walk. Since he is 3/4 Bloodhound, he has his nose to the ground the entire time. Occasionally he will run up to me, and give me a nudge or kiss on my hand, thanking me for the walk, and then back to the ground his nose goes. He is the funniest dog, and so sweet. And his bay...So lound..A lady walked by the other day and said "so your the one I have been hearing" lol.

DH decided that it was time to butcher some of the roosters that had gotten mean. That was first for me & the grand kids. The kids really got tickled over
the chickens running around with their heads cut off.
They were good sports & helped hold the chickens up while we plucked them. My granddaughter had a pricefor helping--fresh chicken salad.
Down to 1 Barred Rock rooster, 3 Silkie roosters, 1 Banny hen, 1 Barred Rock hen & 5 Silkie hens.
Now, if they will just start laying eggs.......

The weather has been great up here for harvesting and the farmers are going as hard as they can to get the crops off. The weather is supposed to hold for another week and that is really good news for us.
I have been riding almost daily again since the rain quit. My horse and I had a bit of an adventure last week when he spotted one of the giant plastic bags they are using to store the grain in. They look like giant slugs in the field. Kruiser decided it was probably going to eat him and after getting as close as he could manage he had enough and bolted across the field. I off course was trying out a new side pull bridle which has no bit in his mouth and I was thinking, man this might not have been the best idea. However I managed to pull him around after a short run and he came to a standstill. He was antsy for the rest of the ride and sure didn't want to head back towards that thing but if he wanted to get back in our yard he had to face his fears and realize the going in the driveway was the only way we were getting home! I made him stand and walk in and out of the driveway until he quite fidgeting but he still didn't like it. He was jumpy again yesterday and I had not going towards the bag on our ride but today he is headed north to face his fears. It might take us a few hours to go 50 feet but so be it. I don't want him thinking he can run from things.

Spark On!

Sandy

My outdoor adventures aren't great events but felt really good after being chained to the computer this week. First, I rode in the giant combine while my DH picked the soybeans, then we walked through the picked field back to a vehicle to go home. Saturday I cleaned up the flower and herb gardens at home, raked some leaves, and picked up the dog yard. Sunday I checked on our land and camper. The trail is still too wet to get the camper out for the winter but it was fun running with the dog through the leaves. Maybe this will jumpstart my outdoor activity and I'll start walking with the dog again!!

I haven't done any rock climbing in a long time, but I admire you both--for trying and for facing your fear.

I'm not particularly afraid of heights but I had a huge adrenaline rush (like you mentioned Dawn) when I did a "Tarzan swing" in Costa Rica. Wow--that was exciting, but I don't think I'll do it again, made my legs feel like rubber! I do like the ziplining, wish I had one at home!

These days for outdoor activities I'm mostly doing gardening and poultry chores, or hiking our trail at home (in between rain showers still--arghh), but as soon as my vision improves I'm hoping to rent kayaks with DH and go boating.

I hope everyone has some quality time outside this weekend!

Rock climbing. Good for you. I have a fear of heights, which makes some of my outdoor stuff hard, so I decided to take up rock climbing to try to get over it. I took a class for several months in Colorado, and climbed for a couple of years. But I could still feel that huge adrenalin surge every time. I finally decided, that I had faced my demon, but that I didn't have to win. That we could both just coexist side-by-side. That I didn't have anything to prove, and I stopped climbing. I know that I grew from the experience, but I didn't get over my fear.

yesterday i attempted to rock climb. i was not good at it at all! i just felt too heavy and too short and too weak. i tried really hard though (which i am feeling today) and i look at rock climbing as one of those things that i will be able to do to a better extent when i am at a better weight and more fit, which i am on my way to being.

thanks outdoor women, you are great!

Wow, those cakes look pretty spectacular to me! I'm glad you didn't let your indulgence become a throw-in-the-towel affair! Stay up on this horsie and RIDE!

One great thing I've learned (am learning) from SparkPeople is that all-or-nothing thinking is not productive! Not helpful! Not realistic! Not cool! And I have to remind myself not to do it, but I'm getting better. Looks like you are too! Good luck. And just think--you're now Cake-Free!

Hi, everyone!

The wedding is OVER!!! I am so relieved to have that done. I posted a couple of pics of the cakes on my sparkpage if anyone cares to see them. I am definitely NOT a professional cake decorator, but they needed cheap and plentiful and that I can do. I used the batter for 10 normal cakes, and made 20 pounds of frosting!

I also went to the rock, gem, and mineral show with some other relatives on Sunday. It was pretty fun. I like the beautiful rocks, but am not sure I am willing to devote big chunks of time to traveling to collect them, to learning the lapidary skills to manipulate them, or to the patient work of making jewelry with them. Although the last one appeals to me the most, I guess.

I blew my diet over the weekend and almost quit the whole thing on Monday morning. I am so glad that I was able to stop myself and get back in the saddle. And I was so shocked to see how easily I was brought to the point of being willing to just forget the whole thing. I felt like I had already blown it, so why deprive myself any more, why not just quit? Boy, I am going to squash that little, mouthy devil who encourages me to quit with my fist if he shows his chubby little face around me again!:) I keep looking for that svelte, skinny angel on my other shoulder...

Hope you all are having a great day. I am looking forward to settling in tonight to watch BL. Hoping for some new inspiration.

ttyl,
Lia

Lia,
We have the sinus problems here, too.
It has turned cooler & rained for 14 days straight.
I have cabin fever. I am thinking about going hunting in a few minutes just to get outdoors. Bow hunting isn't my favorite. Well, maybe it will give me an adventure to talk about or a skull for you?

Hi, all,

The red velvet cakes are done and in the freezer. Now I am making all the frosting. I can tell you, I am pretty sick of powdered sugar. This wedding better last, because I don't have it in me to bake all this again!

The good news is that I am on a streak of one day with my exercises:). Which is 100% better than not doing them at all, as I have been lately. It is rainy and cold here, so I am working out inside, which is not my preference but something I am going to have to get used to in the coming months.

Everyone be sure to guard your health these days. IMO, dieting and losing weight take a toll on the body's energy reserves and makes us a bit less able to fight off illness. So we need to be extra mindful of getting the proper nutrients, rest, and perhaps even vitamins. I know several people with the flu. We are battling sinus issues in our home due to this recent change in weather/temperature.

ttyl, hope everyone has a great day!

I hope everyone is enjoying some kind of outdoor activities (atlatl throwing sounds way cool, Lia). We're having more rain here in Tennessee and I'd be happy to send it somewhere else!

I'm thinking about harvesting some peppers this afternoon and maybe digging sweet potatoes but haven't worked up the motivation yet (sort of lazy on these dark fall days). But I'll hike our trail with the doggie and herd the chickens to bed this evening. DH and I got 8 more chickens on Saturday so we have a baker's dozen now and wonder if we should have our heads examined. They're lots of fun though and make good poop for the garden.

I'm going to do a sun dance to get fired up for outdoors fun!

Have fun Vegiwave--don't overdo after illness!

whee: yes, I would think dodging walnuts counts for something. Hazardous duty points if nothing else! My mother used to make us wear batting helmets when we played in the yard in the fall!

Mom: How are things in the garden? We had lots of rain on Friday which makes that old clay soil so sticky and hard to work in.

Oceanus: how are you feeling? Hope you are better.

I am returned and mostly recovered from my atlatl throwing debut on Saturday, our tour of several ancient Indian mounds, and dd's shooting sports class on Sunday after church. My throwing arm is a bit sore but I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to going to another event on the 31st.

This is cake week for me. I am baking two sheet cakes and the bride's cake for my niece's wedding and also a birthday cake for dd on Wednesday. I am also going to try really hard to fit exercise in every day this week.

It's cool and a bit overcast here this am, good weather to work in. So I hope to have a busy, productive day!

My outdoor activities haven't been very adventurous today, unless you count dodging black walnuts. And come to think of it, I have been risking life and limb working under this dang enormous walnut tree today. Anyway, I enjoyed some glorious weather this morning for three hours of push mowing, weeding, transplanting ferns, and tossing walnuts into the driveway. And I only got smacked by a walnut once.

Rain and even a tornado watch are in store for this afternoon, but I'm hoping for better weather tomorrow and maybe a kayak outing with DH.

I hope everyone is having a good Friday with some fun time outside (without walnuts).

And Lia, when you finish with your clothes I have a tornado in my closet that needs to be organized (or hey, I have matches . . .)

Whee, I like how you think!!!

Mom, I hope you will rub off on me. We have always had a garden but I always run out of steam toward the end and the weeds get it. I am envious of your green house.

Yesterday I went and bought dd's birthday stuff and I am so proud of myself--I stayed away from Chick-fil-A! I walked the whole mall while I was there instead of just zipping into the store I'd came for. And then in the pm, dh and I spent an hour splitting firewood for my mother.

I'm STILL swapping winter clothes. Either we have an enormous amount of clothes or very tiny dressers. Seriously though, we do have lots of clothes with having to have both farm clothes and town clothes. I can't wait to pitch most of them and get new, smaller sizes!

Hope everyone is doing well. We're supposed to have rain all day tomorrow but hopefully Saturday will be good.

I think the calorie count for carrying loads of laundry is huge, and picking up other people's stuff is double. Icky work is triple. I guess I should go scrub something LOL.

I highly recommend Costa Rica--it's a beautiful country. DH and I lead trips to Latin America and this was our latest, and a big hit with our group! Nice to be home though and I'm learning not to eat so much!

I've been burning calories with yard and garden work these days--I always want to get a huge amount done before it frosts and I've been working a lot, though it's icky in the rain. Hey, triple calories!

net, I'd love to come for a visit. I am usually at my most desperate by mid February! By that point I would probably be willing to crawl on my hands and knees to get out of the ice and snow.

whee, I am soooo envious! I love every activity on your list. I've been to Mexico and Guatemala, and a couple of places in South America, but not to Costa Rica. Sounds wonderful. You are so fortunate to have gone.

I have been carrying loads of laundry up and down stairs all day (do we know the calorie count for this?), scrubbing bathrooms (should qualify for double points when doing icky work), and picking up stuff that IS NOT MINE. Thank God I can soon settle down with a big salad and watch BL!

I'm a Ohio Gardener and we have had a few hard frost. I think my veggies are protected by the wind blocks and country structures around it. HOWEVER... I did get hit pretty good the other day killing the tops of a few of the peppers. Check out my Blog entry with the harvest photos at :

Great to meet you all.

Now is the busy time of plowing and bringing in the fertilizer to but the garden to 'sleep' for the winter. It was a wonderful season dispite the dry weather we had. Wouldn't you agree!

You have some wonderful challenges on your page . I am going totake some time to read them this morning with my coffee!

net, I wish I could make the trip! There are many skulls I don't have. I suppose it is cheaper than a shoe addiction!

OB, sorry to hear about your cold. Dd and I started fighting some congestion late last week when our sinuses went crazy when the weather changed dramatically. I have been taking extra vitamin C and also using a spray called NasalCrom. I don't particularly like how it feels right after I use it but I always feel much better the next morning.

Mom, where are you that you can still work in your garden? I am in Ohio and we had our first hard freeze last week. So our gardens are done for the year.

I am doing okay with my eating, but am still having a terrible time getting back to doing my daily exercise. Anyone have any great words of motivation to give me a good kick in the right direction?

TIA,
Lia

Oooo, net, what area do you live in? I don't have any bobcat skulls!

Went on a couple of short hikes on Saturday and helped dh cut a truckload of firewood. Today we went to church and then on to dd's shooting sports class. She is doing advanced archery and intermediate rifle this season.

I didn't lose that last pound and missed my September goal by a pound. But Monday I will start on my October goals and I will do everything I can to catch that pound then.

Hope everyone is well and enjoying this fall weather. It feels like winter might be a bit early this year.

Finally got to go hunting. Bow Season. Saw a few Does
but no bucks. None within range anyway.
DH was doing a fawn bleet, a bobcat started stalking him. He ended up having to kill it before it pounced.
My 11 yr old grandson got a kick out of seeing it, but refused to touch it.

That was my adventure?

I watered my friends garden, played with her dogs because she is out of town. I then came home, and watered all of my plants. Refilled the bird seed feeders, and put fresh water in the bird bath. Later on the day, my Hubby spotted a Sparrow Hawk in our back yard. (check out my blog for pic)

It's funny how we biology types just can't turn down a good skull! You just never know when you might want it later. Dh used to say, "Other wives don't seem to have the heads of dead things buried in their back yards..." Their loss....

I got my 20 minutes in on the treadmill this am and am now going to go do some aerobic house cleaning. I have more of a floating weigh-in day, so because I wasn't pleased with the scale this am, I am going to delay my official weigh-in this week until tomorrow am to try to meet my Sept. goal. I am one pound away, so there is a glimmer of hope I will achieve it!

Hope all is well with you all,

You have no idea how much I appreciate that. Funny story, I used to work for Ontario Parks when I was in University and one of the campers came up to me one day an said: "Hey do you want a moose head for the nature centre?" NOw in my head I was thinking stuffed moose head, moose skull? So I said of course! Nope FULL moose head, flesh, eyes, ears and.... maggots. My boss was none too impressed.

OB, you're a better man than I am--a walk in the cold rain!

I finally got back on the cardio trail, but only by accident. You may be one of the few who could appreciate this, but the neighbor brought me an elk skull from his hunt in Idaho. We went out to hang it in a tree to rot clean. He had put a foreleg in another spot but a bear took it, so we had to put the skull waaay up in a tree. I'm going to be so mad if a bear gets it!

So I ended up doing a nice 20 minute hike to hang the skull. Felt good. Now I hope I can keep up with it.

Did my strength training, not with great enthusiasm, but I did get it done.

Today I am on cardio. I don't feel like doing anything. We had a big change in weather and dd and I both woke up with a bad sore throat from all the sinus drainage.

So how about you, OB, did you get your strength work done? (Can you hear the encouraging, teasing tone in my voice?)

Well, the Fair is finally over, so I am hoping to get back to normal life. I did well with my diet during the event, but got way off track regarding my exercise. And now I am having real trouble finding the time and motivation to get back to it.

It just seems like so many other things crowd it out during my day. I am going to work very hard to try to be able to report tomorrow that I did my strength training. Please hold me accountable!

OH yes fish eaters count for sure!!!

If you are into it, there is a great guide that is put out by the Monterey Bay Aquarium that will outline what fish are healthy and environmentally friendly to eat. Depending on where you live in the country, they have a West Coast Guide, East Coast guide, Central and Southern US guide too. THey also have a sushi guide. They are the size of a credit card and I never leave home without one. In fact, I have all of them so when I travel to different parts of the country I can choose my fish wisely.

Cheryl, of course being a fish eater counts!

My newest burgeoning passion is primitive shooting sports. My 10yo dd has been in the 4-H shooting sports program for about 3 years. However, she has gone about as far as she can until her upper body strength matures some more. So she just can't pull the more powerful bows that she would need to take direct aim on her targets--she has to sight on the clouds and loft the arrows down the range, which makes it very difficult to be accurate or to compete.

But this past weekend she tried atlatl throwing (kind of spear throwing with a special device (atlatl) to toss the spear, which they call a dart). So anyway, that has lead to an interest in blow guns and other types of very primitive weaponry.

So in a couple of weeks, we will go to an atlatl match. I think I am going to try it also. You never know when you will need to be able to chuck a spear a hundred yards with deadly accuracy!

Any other ancient weapons people here? I certainly could use some advice, I mean what does one wear to an atlatl match??? The only furs I own are on the bunnies under the beds!

Some fun facts which you probably already know, but just to let everyone else know too...

Orcas are not actually whales. They are the largest member of the dolphin family.

Each orca has a unique greyish patch on their backs and sides that can be used to positively identify separate individuals.

Male orcas have larger, triangular shaped dorsal fins and the females have smaller, back-swept (technical term for this shape is "falcate") dorsal fins.

"Shamu" at Sea World is actually more of a character role rather than a particular animal, kind of like the Lassie collie dogs. Many different orcas, both males and females have played this role at the various SW parks over the years.

So much for the marine biology lesson for the day. Can you tell we homeschool : ) ????

Orca. My DH lives on the Puget Sound. There was a transient pod that was coming in to feed. They rarely travel so far into the bay to actually make it to our inlets, so we get a little excited.

I have never seen them, except on the coast. Even when I went on a fall cruise to the San Juan Islands, no whales. Lots of Dahl's porpoise, they were fun!

cchazz, what kind of whales are you looking for? I used to be a marine biologist in Florida and love working with the big whales.

Just the name alone sounds wonderful, Osprey Trail. So tell me more.

p.s. I love it when people add a link to where they are going, it's a little virtual tour!

Have fun and stay warm!

HEading out camping this weekend. The leaves aren't off the trees yet, so even though it is bird season, chances are we will not be too successful hunting, but the fish should still be biting. My one goal for this weekend is to hike Osprey Trail. It is about 7 km, up and down a lot of hills. It is not a hard trail, totally doable, but it is just getting myself to go do it, rather than read magazines at camp. I'll tell you all about my adventures when we get back.

Hopefully we don't freeze to death in the tent as it may go down to 5 degrees C this weekend. BRrrrrrrrr

Tried to go whale watching again, they were here Friday, but not Saturday or Sunday.

Sunday our boat broke down so we had to be towed in. And as life would have it, the wind picked up so it was a challenge. A little cold and wet too.

Nothing fabulous this past weekend. Down with a cold and I laid around and fed it. Put me behind with my homework so I will be hard at it today.

I had fabulous day. Went hiking in VA Whiteoak Canyon I thing that area of the Shenandoah Mountains has the most beautiful views and the water falls were just the best. We hike 7.8 strenious miles but it worth it for the views. emoticon emoticon

I had a wonderful day outdoors today with DH, six friends and two dogs. We went canoeing/kayaking on a nearby river (calm water) and enjoyed beautiful blue skies and white clouds, great exercise and being together. I feel so refreshed and renewed! And our doggie is worn out!

We had a bit of sun yesterday, got some videos done of the horses and moved my big new turtle tank in the house to get ready to bring the critters inside.
Also transplanted and divided my water plants and brought some of them inside as well.

Spark On!

I must have sent the cool weather somewhere because hot and humid and thunderstorms are back here! I guess I'll do my workout indoors today unless it clears up soon.
