Hello Darlene and welcome.
Unfortunately you will find many doctors that will recommend a hysterectomy. I am in NY and I have sent many women to my doctor for the very same issue and she has dine one hysterectomy at the patient a request. Dr. Lisa Eng will work with you as long as there is no other medical dangers to worry about. If you want her info I can send it to you.

Greetings! I stumbled across this thread when I googled Lupron and Fibroids, which I have googled countless times! I am 55, and have been waiting and praying for menopause to arrive to shrink this beast within me so I can hopefully find a surgeon to remove it but leave my uterus. I had a myomectomy in 2009. Apparently I am a breeding ground for these nasty buggars as they returned with a vengeance, wreaking havoc on my hemoglobin levels, forcing me to have 4 blood transfusions. I received a 3-month Lupron shot yesterday. I had great success with the single injection shots last summer and was eager to have a myomectomy. Then my doctor informed me it was still too big or more like she was not skilled enough to proceed with a myomectomy. However she could do a hysterectomy. I felt so betrayed as she knew all along my strong feelings against a hysterectomy. I think she thought she would be able to persuade me, especially after the Lupron worked wonderfully, shrinking the beast to the size where I could actually wear my button pants!

Oh my, I have gone on long enough. If anyone has a skilled OBGYN in NJ they can recommend, I would love to hear from you! One day, the cause of fibroids will be discovered and treatment other than surgery or Lupron will be available.

Fibroid Free - one day I will truly be!

Cheers!

Darlene

I never had a biopsy but I had many vaginal ultrasounds. They are painless. They do not push up to far.
My sister just had a biopsy of her uterine lining and she said it was very painful. My doctor doesn't do biopsies for fibroids.

I just found out I have a 2.5 centimeter fibroid stuck in my uterine wall. I looked at images of these fibroids online, and OMG, they are scary looking things. LOL. Even though its fairly small, I have symptoms of stomach and ovarian pain worse than ever. I am approaching menopause. During my period, I bleed for ten days, spotting some, heavy bleeding 3 days in a row, etc. I am tired, fatigued, grouchy, and my stomach hurts real bad. I didn't realize this was a fibroid. I went for a stomach ultrasound (I refused the vaginal one, because I hear it's quite painful), and I also had a painful biopsy. I learn afterward: I should have been given a local anesthetic for the biopsy. I wasn't and I lay there screeching as the doctor poked at my uterine wall. Because of the pain I experienced in the biopsy, I am nervous about even going in for another papsmear, let alone one of these vaginal ultrasounds or biopsies: And i have to say - I even feel violated a little since the biopsy, even though the doctor was sweet and did everything to make me stay comfortable.(I screeched anyway. Nothing worked to take my mind off the pain):(

Now, what I'm mostly upset about, is not the fibroid (It's benign), but the vaginal ultrasound I"ll have to go to in six months.

As a result, has anyone here ever used their own local anesthetic over the counter, like Lidocaine? I bought one bottle of this on Amazon. It hasn't been delivered yet. I want to try it and see if it will numb my insides.

I thought I could use this numbing agent and put it into my vaginal a few minutes before the next painful procedure. Has anyone here tried this, to use an over the counter numbing gel?

Thank you for this information. All of us have fibroids or had them at one point in our lives and know this information (or at least some of it) but this thread is about treatment options. This is where we share which treatments we have tried and what has worked of us and what has not worked for us.

Uterine Fibroids are very common in women, with as many as 75% experiencing them at some period in their lives, often undiagnosed and unknown. Uterine fibroids symptoms can be but not limited to pelvic pain or pressure, pain in the back of the legs, pressure on the bladder, lower back pain, and an abnormally enlarged abdomen. Lastly, one the different symptoms of uterine fibroids is unexplained weight gain. Fibroid growths can range in size, from as small as a pinhead to larger than a melon. The larger the fibroid, the more weight it contains. Fibroids have been reported weighing more than 20 pounds.

I am glad to hear evrything went well. Take it easy and allow your body to heal internally. I used a heating pad for the gas pain.

Had my surgery yesterday. came home this morning.
I'm feeling pretty good. sore of course. But the pain is manageable.
They did a laparoscopic procedure. I think the shoulder pain from the gas is worse than the pain from the surgery right now.
Emotionally I'm feeling pretty good. Not depressed. Not upset. Stressed about not being able to do what needs to be done around the house. But that's just motherhood. I'll get over it.
I'll keep you updated on my progress.

I know how you feel, my sister did the same thing to me. It got to the point where I had to stop telling people that didn't need to know until after I had the surgery. To my sister I said I have tried everything non-surgical. I want my life back so either su0ort me or don't bring it up again. The last thing I need is you stressing me out over something I am fine with.

One month from surgery. Still feeling its the right thing, But I'm starting to get people questioning me.
Why surgery? Can't they do anything else first?
And my favorite is my FIL. He keeps asking me how I'm doing, I think he means in general. "I'm fine." "No your not! Your having surgery of course your not alright. Your worried about it."

I'm really not very worried. But He is stressing me out.

Once you have a date is all becomes all too real. The timing sounds perfect with work and the holiday.
I will keep you in my prayers. I am sure your surgery will be uneventful.

Well, the date is set. My surgery will be on Nov. 17. The Thursday before Thanksgiving.

Now I'm feeling nervous.

It's so much more real with a date on it.

It will work out well for work. I only work part time, so I'll actually only take 1 week off, plus the week of Thanksgiving I'm off so I'll have 13 days before I have to even think about it. Then I go, sit in a chair and tell everyone else what to do for a few weeks as I ease back into it.

The plan is set. now it's just the execution that has to be done.

Met with my Dr. yesterday, we have decided to go ahead with surgery.
It should happen in November.
They are going in laproscopically and taking the cervix, uterus and tubes.
I feel good about the decision.
Now I'm just stressing about everything that goes along with it. House, family, work, kids soccer, volunteer work, whatever else comes up that my family expects me to handle.
I know that everything will work out. I just have to believe and let go.

You are very welcome. I had fibroids for close to 15 years before I decided to have surgery in 2007. I wish there was a group back then where I could talk to others that understood what I was going through.

Thank-you for your encouraging words. and for keeping this thread active for all of us just starting the journey. I was hoping to avoid surgery but with my age and all I'm beginning to think it may be better than other treatments with so many side effects.

I tried the IUD at first it made me bleed even heavier and caused cramping. It lasted for one week and it fell out of my uterus when I went to the bathroom so I just pulled it out.
I ended having surgery, I had a partial hysterectomy. Only my uterus was removed.
I hope you can get some relief either by surgery or the IUD.

Went back to the Dr. today to find out about the second ultra sound.
Not sure if it was a bad reading the first time or what but I now have 2. One is 10x6x7cm the other is about 2x2x3cm.
She offered to try an IUD because they help with the cramping, which I still have most days even with the staggered dose pill. Its good for 5 years and by then I'll be past menopause and they should shrink. But what is the biggest problem for me is the sensitivity in my abdomen. My 10 month old grand daughter can't sit on my lap and wiggle around like babies do because it hurts my stomach so much when she elbows me or leans on my belly. The top of my uterus is just above my belly button. And I can feel it all the time.

So I'm being referred to a surgeon to discuss options.

I'm over 50, done having kids, sick of the pain, tired of my Sweetie not wanting to touch my cause he's afraid of hurting me, Just ready for it all to be over with. Now, lets see what the Dr. has to say.

I was diagnosed with 2 medium sized fibroids which placed an enormous pressure on my bladder. I was advised by 3 different doctors to undergo surgery to remove these fibroids as I was told that there was nothing I could do to shrink or stop their growth.
However, I researched some natural remedies and went to my local health store and bought the herbs and vitamins and the other more basic ingredients I needed.
After 7 days I didn't see any change so I thought 'here we go again'. But it wasn't another disappointment. By the end of the 6th week on a bright Monday morning, all the pain and the awful bloated feeling just stopped.
I'm thrilled to report that my last ultrasound showed that both my fibroid tumors had shrunk by 80%. My periods are much more consistent now, and I hardly experience any pain.
In case you're wondering, this website contains some of the remedies that helped me:

Hope it helps anyone reading this!

The last few days I've had intense pain in the center of my lower back.
I had food poisoning last week (could be the remains of that working through my system), I got a UTI from dehydration (could be from my kidneys being inflamed), could be cramps from my fibroid, Could have pulled something in my back (I was deep cleaning).
My Dr.'s office called back with the results from the UTI labs and I spoke with the nurse about it. He said "Joint pain is common with UTIs. Watch it for a day or two. I've also had pain in my hip these past few days.

Just asking if anyone else had intense pain near the spine with fibroids?

My GYN. did say that mine looks as if it had outgrown its blood supply, and may be degenerating and that it can be more painful when that happens.

I'll go back in tomorrow if I don't feel better, or today if I feel worse.

I just found out last month that I have A uterine fibroid. It is 10x6x4 cm, roughly the size of a baseball. My uterus is the size of a 3 month pregnancy. I'm 51 and done having kids. Not sure if I want to have a hysterectomy, but Dr. wants to redo the ultra sound in 3 months to see if it has grown, shrunk or stayed the same. We can discuss more then. She said it showed signs of out growing it blood supply.
I haven't had super heavy bleeding, but for the last 6-8 months my cramps have extremely bad. and I've had spotting all month long. The last three months I've had 2 full periods each month. she changed my birth control pill to a higher dose of progesterone that is staggered through the month. Hopefully that helps. I'll let everyone know when I know.

I had 30 fibroids, 25 of which were in the uterine wall causing severe bleeding at any time. I tried Gano and it did nothing for my fibroids but it did help my blood pressure.

I have been dealing with heavy periods and flooding for the past six years due to a uterine fibroid. Initially it only happened maybe two or three times a year. But then it gradually became more frequent and more difficult to manage. Finally it got to the point where I was avoiding long car rides, packing emergency bags and basically allowing my period to control my life. I began to look for answers on the internet, and everything I found I tried. Some things worked initially, but after I few months I believe my body became immune to them and I was right back where I started.

Now fast forward ... I FINALLY found something that works! It's called Gano, and it is AMAZING!!! The results are phenomenal in a short amount of time. It will help reduce your fibroids! It's from a company called Total Life Changes, and they actually have a huge selection of great products. I encourage you to take back power over your period and enjoy life again. Go to the site below and order some Gano today. You'll thank me later!

Hi, my name is Maria.

I just joined this team yesterday. So happy to see there is a support team for this.

I was diagnosed with fibroids in 2011. I have always had heavy bleeding with my periods ever since my first period at age 11, and I'm now 46. I was diagnosed with anemia since 2005, but I never knew that it was due to fibroids. At first, my gyn at the time wanted to "watch and wait" with regard to my fibroids. I did have a D&C that year, to try to remedy the heavy bleeding. It did help for a little more than a year, my periods were at least manageable and I wasn't having to use the restroom every hour.

Then in 2014, things got worse. My periods were no longer reasonably manageable and I found myself having to stay at home on my really heavy days. I was having huge clots with the bleeding. In December of 2014 I had to go to the emergency room because I was going thru a tampon and pad together every 20 minutes. In January 2015, I passed out on the bathroom floor from excessive loss of blood and was in the ER again for a blood transfusion. And another blood transfusion in April 2015.

In March 2015, I began Depo Lupron injections, the ones you have every 3 months. My period stopped around May or June 2015. I am no longer anemic since I haven't had periods. I do take the Aygestin add back, 5 mg, daily. The worst side effects I have had are trouble sleeping, hot flashes and sweating. I have also put on weight, at least 5-7 lbs since being on the Lupron. My belly is really swollen and I was told that my uterus is the size of a 2 month pregnancy. I was told that at least 2 of my fibroids are the size of a small orange.

I am waiting for my insurance to approve me for a myomectomy, and I am hoping it will be soon. I am having another Lupron injection at the end of this month. My current gyn says I can't keep having the injections so I hope the insurance approves the surgery, they have approved everything else so far, the tests, the injections. I'm tired of the whole ordeal, but not completely ready to have a hysterectomy yet.

I had a myomectomy in 2004 they removed 8 the size of navel oranges. They came back about 4 years ago and I had planned another myomectomy in January 2013. In November 2012 I got diagnosed with a kidney disease and the fibroid issue went on the back burner. June 2014 im miserable and my kidney function is stable and now ive decided to have a hysterectomy later this year. My anemia is out of control (5.4) so I need some time to build it back up. I dont have children and was desperate to maintain my fertility but my quality of life is such I had to make the best although hard decision for me. Ive been on lupron going on 18 months and never stop bleeding. My clots are the size of a liver lobe NO JOKE and cramping is unbearable. I haven't been able to exercise due to lack of energy and possible embarrassment if I had an accident. I tried mirena twice. They both fell out within days of insertion. I will have an endometrial ablation next month to stop the bleeding. I cant want to exercise and have my sex life back!

My gynecologist recommended it. On my third month and it really has helped. I have ovarian cysts as well as fibroids, so that may be why it helps. I just know I am not bleeding nickel sized clots for seven days straight now. I feel like I have my life back. But everyone is different.

Welcome to the group!
I had a partial hysterectomy in 2007. I didn't want kids so it was the best decision for me. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Good luck!

Last week, I learned that I have fibroids. I am happy to know what is causing my pain. I have pain all through the day & month. Most nights I sit with a heating pad on my stomach. I have to go back to the dr in 2 weeks and let her know what I want to do for treatment. I am going to have the hysterectomy and end my misery. It is good to know there are others out there that have the same problems as I do.

I am trying Generess Fe and it has helped a lot, but it is $50/month. I had samples from my dr. and I just picked it up. I am going to look into saving some money about this.

Decided not to do the Lupron. I went back to doctor, and im going to have a Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE). Dr said im a good candidate for it, and recovery time is a lot shorter, there is just alot of pain afterwards while recovering. But recovery time is usually 1-2 weeks or less. Not sure when i go yet, they are getting everything scheduled and will let me know. Doctor said if this doesnt work, but it usually does, that i will have to have a hystoctomy. But i read all about UFE and it has high success rates.

I took Lupron for three months before my hysterectomy. I. Was fortunate that I had no side effects from the Lupron. Lupron should not be used long term meaning no longer than a year since it interupts normal hormone production.
How long does your doctor want you to use Lupron?

I was diagnosed with fibroids almost 4 months ago. I was having moderate to severe pelvic pain, but even with the fibroids which were very small 3-4 months ago, Doctors didnt think that was the cause of my pain. So doctor after doctor, no one belived me about the pain i was having. I finally founf a doctor who believed me and has been helping me. I had an ultrasound done a couple days ago and seen my doctor. She said I have 2 large fibroids and a couple small fibroids, plus some other small adhesions and abnormalie and cysts on the ovaries. The doctor is concerned about the large fibroids and said i have basically 2 choices, to go on Lupron or get a hysterectomy. I didnt know much about Lupron at the time, so i filled out forms to get assistance in paying for it. I came home and have been researching Lupron ever since, and there are so many horror stories about it and negative side effects. And from what i read, fibroids are likely to grow back after you stop Lupron. Im scared about either option. Has any one else had experience with Lupron? What are other options i can ask teh doctor about?

Thanks!

There are so many options that don't involve having a hysterectomy. My doctor has been using a Myosure to remove my uterine fibroid hysteroscopically (through my cervix). It's taken several procedures (combined with Lupron shots), and we're not done yet, but importantly, I get to keep my uterus and minimize uterine scarring.

If you're going through this, hang in there!! And get to a good, knowledgeable doctor.

I have had my surgery in 2007. I was posting the question for everyone to share their story so new members and those new to fibroids can know their options since so few doctors like to tell women all their options.

Hello Lara, (This is just my story and what worked for me)

I just seen you post in regards to what can be done about fibroids. I have done a lot of research on fibroids and unfortunately, as it said in one of the studies fibroids are not always uterine. They are more commonly found in the uterus. Anyhow, I have been suffering with my fibroids where they have gotten progressively worse over the years. I was born with anemia as well and the fibroids made my anemia even worse. Living with my fibroids was a nightmare. The Lupron shots are used to help stop the blood flow and to reduce one of the hormons (forget the name of it) that helps cut the blood supply off to the fibroids and help them to shrink. I was on the lupron shot for 9-months. I had to do this in order to shrink my uterus which one fibroid had enlarged to make my uterus the size of a 4-month pregnancy. I have had the surgery twice (the first doc, i have to say really did not do what he should have done). The second surgery, I can definitely feel the rewards of it. My iron levels have improved and so has my energy. My body does not ache nor do i have the sporadic swelling that would occur, the horrible mood swings (Thank God for giving my lovely son the patiences that he has) and the depression. Fibroids can do a lot of damange to your body. Unfortunately, they have not figured out a real solution to prevent them nor do they know how they occur but from experience and from whats told, plenty of exercise is one way to keep them at bay. If you dont want the surgery like I had, there is some homeopathic methods (which again may only be a temporary and may not even be long term, fixs), laproscopic or ablations are other alternatives. I wish you luck but I can honestly say I do not regret the surgery.

Lots of love and blessings to you.

What have you tried to treat your fibroids? I tried everything non-surgical to treat my fibroids and it would work for 3 months and then my fibroids seem to adjust and the symptoms would come back. I finally had a partial hysterectomy to end it once and for all.

Many women newly diagnosed are clueless as to what their options are. Many doctors unfortunately don't have a clue either. I figured we could help each other in this area.

I tried birth control pills, nuvaring, Mirena IUD, going vegan, giving up dairy, Lupron injections. They all helped with my extremely heavy menstrual cycles but nothing lasted more than 3 months.
