I let fitbit track my walking, but when I am in circuit class which is weight lifting and biking I put that into sparkpeople.

I can do it!!

I have used Sparkpeople for the past 7 years, but stopped last year when I bought the fitbit because they didn't sync. Woo hoo so glad that they now do and I am back. However, I am finding an issue with how i want to log my exercise. I used to just let the fitbit track it and may still do that. It seems to be easier with the cardio part of working out. Any ideas? How are you folks doing it? Or log it at fitbit and see what happens?

Hi Betsy (that's my sister's name, too!) -
I've only had my FitBit a week. In reading the FAQs page on the FitBit, I was surprised to read that stair stepper machines don't "count" as a flight of stairs the way FitBit works. (it would count the actual steps as steps...). It evidently can sense the changes in altitude as you walk up and down those four steps in front of your house. And I'm thinking I also read in the FAQ how many steps they considered a "flight" - somethig like 10 steps maybe? Not sure (have to go re-read it...). So probably making three round trip down and back upstairs on your little flight would count as a flight of steps.

You could test the theory out with your FitBit - just stand at your entrance like you are going downstsirs outside (if you are inside now), and squeeze your FB button to start the clock (like you do for sleep!). Then walk down the stairs, turn and walk upstairs, and do this maybe three sets. Then stop the clock. Then if you feel like doing more, start clock and walk maybe five round trips down and upstairs. Then stop the clock. Then go to your computer and put FB on dock to force sync, and look on your dashboard. Click on the tab that says "Activity". It shoukd show the "activity" in terms of steps and flights for each of the timed sequences (will show the start and end time, and each additional "set", if more were done.

There is a faint little grey icon to the right that is a notepad, I think - when you hover your mouse over it, a little info balloon pops up saying "Edit" and you can click it and it reveals a little box where you can type in a name ("stair climbing test 1" or whatever, and in the description area, indicate how many round trips you made up and down the stairs...

(and keep in mind, nothing says you have to do both sets in one day either - if one set is what you can do, go with that. The observation of how that "translates" on FB dashboard page on your account will still be useful.).

Even if you exercise at night and start stop the clock, you can edit it to show that it was exercise and not sleep. FB tries to assume it was sleep by the time, but it will show red marks indicating steps or flights, and there is a link to change it from a sleep tracker to an activity tracker. Or like one day I decided I really needed a nap, and so I took nap and started & stopped clock, and it showed up as "activity" and I changed it to sleep.

So maybe that helps...?

Betsy..I just got mine yesterday and I love it. If I'm just hanging out, I use the sleeping band so I don't have to worry about it falling out. I think we got ours just in time since they now sync with SP. It is great. I find myself going up and down my stairs more to get that badge :)

hey everyone... kinda new to fitbit but not sparks.... i just read most of past messages... and looks like you got your wishes... i got a notice yesterday that we could join the two trackers... it sure is nice to post your food amd fitness just one....

the few days i have used mine... i do like the sparks tracker better for one thing... i made a mistake on recording a food item and did not see where or how i could edit or delete it... as result i was over on some things.... in sparks you can edit or delete an item...

i have the fitbit ultra which tracks your steps.. and i like the idea of % for the day.... i only have 4 steps leading into my house... so stair climbing is a challenge for me... but i like the idea of them telling me how high i have climbed its a personal challenge for me to increase my percentages goals were set high to work on getting more healthe/fit...

Yes, I got it to work, but I am seeing this question asked in the other sub-topics. It needs to be posted in other parts of the team so people can find it.... as one of the other sub-topics, I had asked how to connect the two devices and someone said they thought it would not work for the FB Ultra like mine, only for the newer ones....

Turns out, the link worked just fine (although at the moment my FB is charging up and syncing on the dock. Haven't looked to see if anything is showing up on SP yet.).

I'm new FitBit as I just ordered the latest version. It's going to ship to me on Oct 17, 2012 and I can't wait!!

Here's the link to read more about the partnership between FitBit and SparkPeople.
Here's the official press release from last Thurs regarding the news that SparkPeople will now sync with FitBit.

So glad to read this information from both parties in this press release. That is why I chose to switch from the MyTrak SlimCoach to FitBit.

I don't usually buy fitness gadgets on impulse, but my unsatisfactory experience with the MyTrack, bugs in their system, no smartphone app, sync issues, and the fact another company just bought them out almost a month ago has me wondering why I chose them over other options when I conducted my research. Oh well, lesson learned.

Looking forward to great dialogue, challenges and encouragement from all you experienced FitBit veterans.

Spark on...

I dont track food on Fitbit. I just use it to record my activity during the day and motivate me to work harder when I feel like slacking. I figure it is worth it for that. I also have asked both fitbit and sparkpeople to link up. I feel if more of us keep asking we may get our way.... squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I can do it!!

~~~I am now planning on using SP for tracking, so I'm trying to figure out a way to convert FB activity to SP. Don't see a way to do it except to simply enter steps/miles into SP each day. Anyone have a different approach?
I kind of have figured out how many steps I take for a mile. I am only 5 feet, so it takes about 2800 steps. I then figure I use about a 100 calories a mile, if that's any help.
I'm not investing another $90+ in another device; I'll stick with my fitbit. Spark should bend and link the Fitbit to SP. Money speaks loudly, however.
I've had my fitbit for several months. I briefly attended WW meetings at work this summer. WW is selling their own fitbit-like device which links to your account (the device costs about $40, plus $5/month to connect). I certainly wasn't going to buy a new device, so I just figured out a way to calculate WW activity points from my FB active score.
I am now planning on using SP for tracking, so I'm trying to figure out a way to convert FB activity to SP. Don't see a way to do it except to simply enter steps/miles into SP each day. Anyone have a different approach?
I love my FitBit, it makes me want to walk more. It was giving me problems and now I have replaced it. I missed it so while it was down. Now, on with my walking.
I sure do hope Fitbit and Sparkpeople link up. I already have it linked with my LoseIt.com account.
Still waiting for the Fitbit to arrive in the mail (only ordered it 3 days ago) - I think Spark will eventually link up with Fitbit; there's so many Sparkers using it. We need to send our thoughts and suggestions to SP and hopefully they'll address the suggestions soon. Pat
Renie, FB also has a way of creating meal plans.
You may consider creating your own food. Call it breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack and then just create a serving size of 10 calories. So when you log your meals to FB you just select this food and enter the amount of servings to equal your SP listing.
For example if you ate a 500 calorie breakfast, then you would log in 50 servings of your created breakfast food on the FB site.
I couldn't get that to work--putting the totals from Sp to FB. They don't always seem to jibe. Maybe that's why they don't want to join.
I have to admit I like the SP one better for several reasons:
Special plans for diabetes
The categories fit my plan better
SP has the regular meals I eat in a place to just click on them, not pick each item out each day.
I posed this question to the technical support people at FB a few months ago and they advised that there were currently no plans to sync SP and FB. :(
I was so pleased to take part in this survey but I have not heard if our responses will result in any action.
Meanwhile, because I tend to eat the same things I log on both sites but you may want to consider logging your food in one entry on the FB site in order to take advantage of their Meal Plan.
Nevertheless, I agree, let's keep asking!
I've posted in the FitBit forum a request to sync with the SP nutrition tracker. If you'd like them to do that, too, please comment on that request! Maybe if enough of us ask, they'll do it.
I'm with what seems to be the majority. I just bought my FitBit Ultra for a lot of reasons. I like the stair counting feature since my office is on the 3rd floor and my bedroom is on the second floor I get a few flights a day without trying! It also tracks my sleep, which has become important for me. Previously I had the monitor that Costco sold. It needed to be worn on the arm and it turns out my skin was easily irritated by the metal contact nodes!
I would LOVE the FitBit to sync with SP. I've synced it to MyFitnessPal but really like the diet tracking features here a lot better-plus, I have put in so much here already that I hate the tedium of doing it all over again.
No, I would not buy a third unit just to link with SP.
I LOVE SP. What a super awsome site this would be if it linked to FitBit!
Hi, I'm new to this site and have had my Fitbit for about 3 months.
I feel like I'm having to do double duty with my workouts, food, etc. It makes me not want to do either one.
Thanks for the tip on the leash for the Tidbit. I lost mine in a restaurant, but luckily it was still there under a table when my son-in-law went back to look. Whew. I do use the cuff for nighttime--much better. And, I have to turn my sleep tracker to Sensitive. True it doesn't chart my sleep if I just lying in bed reading or whatever. The sleep info is the main reason I got a Fitbit.
Thanks for the insights, everyone.
I really wish SP would link to the FB. I love loseit except that I can't skip to tomorrow (I work 3rds). And that is why right now I'm using SP to track cause they do let me skip to tomorrow. I would not buy a separate device.
I agree with being able to sync my fitbit rather than buy a new device. I really don't think I would buy a new device just to link to SP. If it were a much better product I might replace my fitbit with it if and when it stopped working (cuz I'm sure it will one day).
I, too, have a leash for my fitbit, which has saved me from losing it several times. You can buy the leash for about $2 on amazon. I had trouble accessing the survey, but got in by cutting and pasting then removing the http// from the IP address. I hope SP will set up a way to sync my fitbit to SP, it will make me more likely to sign in to SP everyday!
I love my fitbit, and will not buy a new device if SP puts one out. FB has done the trick for me, it keeps me engaged with my fitness goals all day long. I get excited about keeping up with my FB friends (or surpassing them) everyday. Come on SP, link to FB!
I love my fitbit. I wished it worked with sp but I would not buy something else just to link. I got a leash from amazon for a couple of dollars to attach to it so I wouldn't lose it. I wear on my bra and attach the leash also so it doesn't fall off if I bend over or do something stupid like hang upside down.
The link doesn't work for me. Perhaps the survey is over? At any rate, I love my fitbit and spent too much on it to even consider getting a different device. Even if Spark came up with a similar device that that would link to SP, I would continue to enter my info on both the FB and SP sites. I wish that we could link our fitbits to SP, but I don't expect that will happen.
Healthy4me--I recently lost mine--fell off my bra.
The following is copied from what NYHARLEYHUN (Amy) posted to the challenge thread on Fitbit Users Unite:
My husband attached a small plastic zip tie at the top of the fit bit and then we attached a small "leash" to the zip tie. He then trimmed all the excess part of the tie (so it doesn't poke me!). If I am wearing jeans or something with belt loops I put the leash through a belt loop 1st and then attach it to my waistband.
If I am wearing sweats/ jogging pants, etc...I have a safety pin on the leash and I attach it to the waistband.
Not sure if that makes since....
I will post a picture if anyone is interested in seeing what I am talking about!
I WILL look to smaller goals to accomplish the final goal!
OMG I had to go back cos last poster was healthy24me and at first I thought it said healthy4me and knew I hadn't written anything.
Anyway just got mine it is still charging!
Going to be interesting and mine came with a holder to clip on my belt, it is an ultra. is this what some of you are still losing or falling from?
and as to linking together that would be neat, but I can't afford to buy another one.
I have had my fitbit for a little over a month and love it. My favorite part is that is automatically syncs to my fitbit dashboard. If it automatically synced to my sparkpeople account also, it would truly be unbeatable. Hopefully the sparkers will keep pushing for this awesome opportunity
I love my fitbit. I've only had it for a few months and am not interested in buying another one. Fitbit already links with myfitnesspal.com. It is free also. It is not as good as SparkPeople but I find I am using it now to log my food and exercise. If SparkPeople would link to the fitbit that would be ideal.
If your not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
Took the survey, I would love it if the two synced. As it is now I track food in SP and then just put in the approximate number of calories into the fitbit site via 100 calorie snacks
Took the survey, had to copy in browser. Advice for the person with new fitbit- I have a pedometer "harness" that clips my fitbit to the waistband of my pants. I cannot even begin to tell you how many times it has kept me from losing my fitbit, dropping it, or having it go in water. Got it on amazon. My wish- fitbit sync with SP (not a whole new device).
Make it happen- just one step at a time!
I have been using mine for almost 2 weeks and I love it! I wish too that we could sync the device to spark. I don't log my food as much on the fitbit site as I do here because I find that the Spark site has more food choices and makes my meal logging more accurate.
Great advice!
After a few days of data you should have a good picture of how active you really are throughout the day. The results will be eye-opening!
First....wear it on your bra, you won't even know it's there! Second, just watch it for a couple of days, see what your normal numbers are. When you watch your activity on-line, you will see when your active periods are. If your like me, after a few days, I was like "Ok, now what's see what happens when I do this..."
Enjoy and have a great day!
Since SP is free, maybe this would be another way for them to generate income. My FB is new. The company treated me great when Tink chewed my first one up by replacing it at no cost. I know right now another device is not in my budget.
Well it looks like we are all in agreement that we want the two sites to communicate with each other. I am not so certain if the two sites syncing would be the answer. I currently sync my FB with endomondo.com and, to tell you the truth, it does a very poor job. It will sometimes add my running activities to the FB site and give me credit for the steps twice! The steps reading that endomondo lists on their site are sporadic at best. Not happy with the results. I am hopeful that SP does a better job if this is the route they choose but if not then I would at least want them to provide a device as good as what FB currently provides. I don't want to spend another $100 for a device that does not measure to my FB! That being said, and like Amy says, my FB is almost 2 years old and I so want to own one that also counts steps!
I think there are a couple of reasons I indicated that I would buy one...
I have had my fitbit for several years and it seems like I have to reset it about every 2 months for it to work.
So I was already thinking of purchasing a 2nd one. I really want to have the new one that counts flights of stairs, and I would keep my "old" one as a backup.
And also *when* I log my food I definitely prefer the SP website over the Fitbit site.
Either way it should be interesting to see what happens.
If anyone hears anything else please keep us up to date!
I agree with ROCKINROBIN I just got my fitbit. As much I would like them to sink together I am not willing to pay for another device. I originally had the mytrak that they use on biggest Loser.
i returned it for the fitbit, i like the fitbit much better.
Just did the survey.
I am a gadget junkie, I would probably buy one if it met my needs.
I still have a reserve one that does not measure flights of stairs, don't know what I would do with that......
Sigh.....
I did say that I would have to be able to wear it on my bra emoticon
I would like to see them link with FitBit as well. I like it better than my GoWear Fit trackers. Those stayed on my arm and I was tired of seeing it in picture. I definitely don't want to have to buy another product. I wish they would have had an area in the survey where you could make comments.
I agree with Robin & Cobbycat - yes, it'd be SO much easier if Fitbit would just integrate with Sparkpeople, and I indicated that preference on my survey. I'm not shelling out more money for another device - and although I'd hate choosing one site over another, it might force my hand. :(
It appears that SparkPeople may be interested in marketing a FitBit-like device that will link with its website and is seeking its member's feedback. It's about time! Anyhow, if you are interested here is the link for the survey.
