I would like to meet someone at Seal Point Park in San Mateo/Foster City to walk around the track. I am old and WAY overweight and it would help me out if I had to meet someone there. Maybe it would help you get out and about moving also. I'm easy to get along with and reliable.

I'm planning to run the 2012 Bay to Breakers, and was looking for a training plan. As of now, I'm running 3-4 miles/day 4-5 times/ week. Anyone know of a plan specifically to increase distance and endurance? The race isn't until May 20th, so I've got some time. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

It's better to regret something you did than something you didn't do.

one goal is to be at a healthy weight-but to be there with healthy methods.

also to meet other 20-something Bay Area Sparkers? :)

I would love to meet anyone in my area for some in person pair workouts--going to the gym together or meeting somewhere scenic to walk or jog. Currently I work out at the Embarcadero YMCA in SF and the Berkeley YMCA.

My needs as a member of this team is to have somebody in Hayward as an exercise buddy. I need some very real support. I am doing this alone and I get depressed because at the age of 66 it is very difficult to go it alone. I also am a diabetic. I have type 2 diabetes.

Hi I'm Bill, I live in Redwood City. I'm looking for support in working out. I was in the USAF, now that I have 2 kids I want to go back in. I believe that the Army can help to provide a better future for me, my wife, and my children. Right now I weigh in at 338 34% fat, I need to get down to 28% to be readmitted. I'm not use to working out alone, in the past I always did it with others in a group "teamwork" as they say.

Thanks,
Bill

I'm Jacci, and I am 29 (will be 30 this year!) and I'm a mom of 3 children (12, 5 & 3). I'm married, and I live in Livermore. I would like to meet people in my same area that share the same weight loss goals as me. It would be nice to meet more people who are like minded, so we could motivate each other.

Welcome Marisha. Logging in each day and using the tools here on SP is a good way to hold yourself accountable and interact with members who, like you, have many of the same goals. Best of luck to you on your journey and don't hesitate to check in to get the support you need from us.

Bobby,

I couldn't agree with you more... local teams tend to not be very active compared to teams with members that have something more than geography in common.

I am trying to be more active here, though. Maybe we could start a trend.

Based on the lack of activity in the local teams, my answer to the question is more engagement by members.

I thought Id give the questions a shot:

Are you on a weight loss journey or a fitness maintenance journey?
Really a little of both, Im embarking on a continued lifestyle change

Do you like active, personal support from other SP members or do you prefer little involvement from others?
I apreciate active, personal support but I prefer when it comes from someone whos story mirrors my own

Describe your ideal SP Team.
People who really get it and log on or email me or text me or call me or see me lol

What do you hope to get from this SP Team?
Lots of great ideas and encouragement

I have actually been an inactive team member for quite a while. I'm 66 and retired and find that I have much less energy than when I was younger. I used to work in SF, but now going there for any reason has gotten to be a big deal. I'd like to find someone locally (I live on the Peninsula) that would like to get together for walks.

Welcome to you Ruth! I am 60, married with five grown kids, four daughters-in-law, and eight grandchildren! Yes, I work full time and try to keep taking classes of some sort some where to try and keep my noggin cooking!

I am across from S.F., south east of Oakland--in a little valley. I grew up in Oakland.

It is nice to have you join us.

My name is Ruth and I live on the Peninsula. I am 34, married with 3 children. I work and go to school and I am looking for local sparkers to buddy up with. I think it leaves a good feeling when you know that you can log on and your team will be there because you are all in the same area. emoticon

Generally speaking, I need motivation! From this team, I get to know there are over 4,500 Sparkers who live within a reasonable driving distance from me! We are not alone!

My thanks to Donna. You can only do so much to "unquiet" a group and you have certainly done all that--and more!

Warm welcome to you, mzsarrrgh! You sound like my kind of people. Jump right in and post away! We have been having a bit of a quiet period on our team, but please make yourself at home here.

I would also like to figure out how to circumvent the obstacles I put in front of myself BY MYSELF. I highly admire people who can hold themselves accountable instead of relying on others.

Health is a journey... and we're all on different parts of it traveling at our own pace. Best of luck to you in your efforts.

Hi All,
I just wanted to quickly introduce myself:My name is Melissa and I'm a 31yr old mom/wife/projectmanager/voiceactor/etc etc. I have been overweight and struggled with poor body image for most of my life.

Oddly enough the body image issues have improved, while the weight hasn't much. I've started to realize that fitness is about the whole person, and so I'm trying to take that approach rather than focusing on the numbers on the scale.

----------------------------------------
----
Are you on a weight loss journey or a fitness maintenance journey?

-Weight loss and ultimately fitness improvement. While I have been overweight for most of my life, secretly in my head I'm an athlete. I'd like to make that a reality outside of my head.

Do you like active, personal support from other SP members or do you prefer little involvement from others?

-I do like active support, but when I'm having a bad day, bad week, I'll admit that i tend to go into avoidance mode when I know I haven't been taking care of myself.

This is something that I am working on improving.

What I'd really like is to learn how to be my own coach, to kick my own butt when I'm being self-indulgent and falling off of the wagon.

I'm excited to find a team of people who are local. As we all know, the Bay Area is a little different than most places in the country. I love living here, I love the culture, I love the weather and I love the people.

Hey, I live near nature! I live by Lake Merced, and do you know how many times in the eight years I've lived here that I've walked near the lake? About 5.

I'd love to set up a weekend walk "around" the lake as long as we're flexible about when we take it. (The quotation marks are because I am not fit enough to walk all the way around the lake yet. It's about 4.5 miles all the way around.)

Here are my survey questions.

Are you on a weight loss journey or a fitness maintenance journey?

Weight loss and health recovery -- trying to avoid diabetes, although it may be too late for that. At least trying to avoid or postpone the complications of diabetes.

Do you like active, personal support from other SP members or do you prefer little involvement from others?

I would like some active support, I guess, but my time online is very limited.

Do you want to participate in the team more but are not sure how?

Yes.

Describe your ideal SP Team.

Um, one that has people in it?

What do you hope to get from this SP Team?

Contact and communication with people in my area who I have something in common with and who I might someday meet.

Happy lifestyle changes,
MOI/Jo Anne

Hello from North San Jose/Milpitas! This is a wonderful topic for discussion, and I hope to learn more from all of your experiences! My main objective in SP is to stay motivated about exercising as I have not been able to sustain a workout routine. I am a grad student and my schedule can make routine very challenging. I also binge eat when I am stressed, so that's never good. So far logging in SP daily has been enough to keep me going, but the strength training is kicking my butt so hard that I am starting to look for excuses to procrastinate again. If there are local people who want to get together for a hike, it would require more accountability from me.

Lucy

Hi to all! ARIELDAWN360, thanks for your great message. At first, I thought your message was dated 8/9 and I was thinking, wait a minute, that's Sat. and this is Thursday! Then I realized you posted in July!

I am having a flare-up of my chronic lower-back pain which is making it hard for me to do cardio. I was using a hula hoop for some of my cardio. That's a lot of fun but right now that hip action hurts! I also love walking and I have been doing some of that.

Many, many moons ago, I walked around Lake Merritt. I forgot the distance on that--something like 3 miles? I grew up in Oakland but now that I live in the Tri-Valley area, I walk on trails like the Iron Horse Trail. I haven't a clue about Mt. Diablo even though I work in Danville.

A wonderful place to walk is at the San Damiano Retreat which is also in Danville. It is beautiful there and anyone can walk and/or take a lunch up there. That's a treat I haven't given myself lately...

Hi everybody - it's been awhile since I posted anything on this team so let me say that I'm 35, mom of a teen boy, live in west Contra Costa County and am looking to continue losing weight. I've already lost my first 14 and have about 30 more pounds to go.
I love the walking & jogging threads so we can post our minutes each day...I didn't see a biking thread though. I would love to post my biking minutes as well, so I might start a new thread for that if it doesn't already exist.
What are you other team members doing for cardio? Since I developed hip tendonitis I can't do any running or high impact stuff (for the time being) so I enjoy walking and riding my bike...I could be swimming too except I feel fugly in a swimsuit!!! Haha!! Anyway, I would love others to begin posting whatever cardio they're doing each day so we can be more supportive of eachother and cheer eachother on or offer encouragement if someone posts that they've been lazy or incurred an injury or whatev.
Also - it would be cool if people would post WHERE they've done their exercise too, especially if they've gone hiking on Mount Diablo or walked around Lake Merritt, etc. Since we're all Bay Peeps I think we'd all be interested in where others are going!!!
Well, that's my two cents. Good luck everybody and I hope to see a lot more posting!

Warm Welcome, Majella!

I hope that our Fremont area members will reach out to you soon. It's frustrating when you know you have friendship and support to offer but cannot seem to connect with people who want to return it.

I have to admit that my obligations right now do not enable me to be as active here as I'd like. Don't hesitate to reach out, though!

For me I need people I can really get to know and be accountable with. Both for me and them. I only know one person from the Bay Area on spark and we started off being each other's buddies but now it is more me checking in with her and not much from her. We actually both live in Fremont so i was hoping to gain a cool new friend out of it or even a fitness buddy. I am also a co-leader of a group too so spend hours every day checking in with people. It would be nice to actually work on me for a change.

That is what I am currently going to do. Ease up on being other people's cheerleader and work on being my own.

Are you on a weight loss journey or a fitness maintenance journey?

I'm on a weight loss journey. Again. And for the last time, dag nabbit.

Do you like active, personal support from other SP members or do you prefer little involvement from others?

- I like active, personal support. If I didn't want to be involved with others, I wouldn't be posting or joining teams.

Do you want to participate in the team more but are not sure how?

- Umm, just joined. I try to be an active poster of the teams I join b/c I know that enmeshing myself in a community is what will keep me logging on - and logging my food, and making smarter choices

Describe your ideal SP Team.

- A team with regular, active posters
- A team with goals (I like challenges, tracking things, that sort of thing) and team members who will prod others on

What do you hope to get from this SP Team?

- Connect with local sparkers to meet new fitness buddies
- Love the idea of setting up periodic walks or hikes
- Find out about fitness activities in the Bay Area, hiking areas, events, and the like.

Thanks y'all! One of these weekends I'll set up a hike in my neck of the woods. Y'all can come - or not! =)

Maybe we could start logging our exercise. Like for the aerobics logging, we could set up goals/discussions, like:

June Runners Miles
June Walkers Miles
June Bikers Miles

Road Runners log the monthly challenge, then log each day's mileage. For example:

June Goal: 85 miles
6/2: 4.25
6/5: 4
6/7: 12
6/9: 4.5

62.50

And at the beginning of the month, maybe we could add a suggested reward for completing the challenge, say like "make this special dessert" and then there is a link to the recipe.

We could also add a discussion that has links to routes we create on www.mapmyrun.com. It might be a great way to share favorite bike, walk and run routes.

Thoughts?

Aww yes the map!!!

What I would like is a group to walk with!!! I don't know if thats out of line--sorry. But it would be fun to meet people and maybe talk a weekly walk around the Bay Area somewhere. (IE: Crissie Field)

Here is the info on my map so others can get copies!!!

Nature in the City
A guide to San Francisco's Natural Heritage

Map Produced by:
San Francisco Recreation and Parks
The Presidio Trust
Nature In The City

There is a Nature In The City Website!!
so it should be possible to get help there
finding the map!!!

good luck, scott

PS!! Sorry I meant to say thanks for answering!!!

Hi Scott! I have a couple suggestions!

1) The best way to help make a team active is to post, post, post and see who responds. It's like a domino effect! Perhaps start a thread about nature walks in the Bay Area and share some tips from that cool map you have, maybe a new spot a week (within the same thread so folks only have on place to look for all the cool info)? Invite others to share their favorite spots?

2) Joining other groups is definitely a way to expand your Spark experience. What other types of teams would you be interested in? Are you looking for more local groups, groups related to your personal goals, and/or other interests? I'd be happy to help you scout other teams if I knew what you were looking for.

I hope you will share here your thoughts about what works well for you in an SP Team and what doesn't work for you-- either in general or about the Bay Area Sparksters Team in particular.

This thread is for members old, new and future! Here are some suggested questions to answer:

Are you on a weight loss journey or a fitness maintenance journey?

Do you like active, personal support from other SP members or do you prefer little involvement from others?

Do you want to participate in the team more but are not sure how?

Describe your ideal SP Team.

What do you hope to get from this SP Team?

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts. Together we can make Bay Area Sparksters a stronger, even more helpful SP Team.

Please don't be shy about reaching out to me if you have any questions or suggestions.

Donna
