I usually go take pictures to fill requests from people who would like pictures & do not live in this area.

I have a long-time college friend who is involved with Find-A-Grave. I never appreciated how much work it takes to do that, and it's all done by volunteers. Given that, I understand why some of the information may be incorrect or incomplete, but they are very good about taking and making corrections. Thanks to them I have pictures of graves and additional information I would never have had otherwise. My thanks to those of you who do this work.

ASOBFALLS I am also a photographer for Find-A-Grave. In addition to providing needed information for others, it's great exercise.

Daddy passed away 5 years ago. Find a grave had his info wrong, so I stopped trusting it. they have since corrected it, but I seldom go there any more

Had a brief meeting 90 miles away on Sunday (only day the weather was good this week)
stopped at 3 cemeteries and took 150 headstone photos....just random photos in 2 cemeteries which were only 38% photos on Find A Grave.
uploaded about 10 so far. Takes so long when you go to Family Search and add relationships to the Find A Grave memorial
So I have LOTS of computer time waiting for me. and not so much time for SparkPeople

An additional message from Spark Guy -

Hello SparkPeople!

I’m writing to tell you some background and goals for our new Community Goal Feed!

This is an exciting new feature that will motivate you to take one small step to reach your goals in a fun and simple way. With your support, we hope to make this one of the most positive sources of social support in the world.

As part of this launch, we are challenging our members to reach 1 million posts to the Community Feed. I will be posting to the feed just about every day and hope you will join me to both reach your goals and help us reach 1 million posts together!

There are 3 types of posts you can make to the Community Goal Feed:
1) Text post sharing anything you’d like to say
2) Photo with any text you’d like to add
3) Completed goals posted directly to the feed (and include optional comment and/or photo). Goals can be selected from the 4 main areas of: Nutrition, Fitness, Motivation, and Other Goals. The feed will then display the type of goal you selected plus your optional comment. The goal selection process will be easy to understand once you start to make a post.

We’re very excited about having this type of community feed for the first time at SparkPeople building on our longtime supportive community. But I’m especially excited about being able to post Goals directly to the feed. I’ll share more about the reasons for this below.

As quick background, I originally started SparkPeople after putting together a personal improvement program that helped me conquer social anxiety. This program integrated the best of health and fitness with the best of goal-setting, leadership, motivation, and behavioral psychology. A co-worker used the same program and eventually lost 50 pounds and told me I changed her life. She went on to motivate a group of other people who said, “Pat, if you can do it, we can do it!” This was the original “spark” that led to SparkPeople – which then led to reaching our mission to “spark” millions of people to reach their goals using health and fitness as a springboard to success in all areas of life.

We believe this Community Goal Feed is one of the best uses we’ve ever had for this underlying program that integrates these areas in a way that makes it fun to reach goals – both because of the social support and the wide range of goals we’ll all be encouraged to track and share.

Another piece of background is that we have always had 4 main types of features on our site/app:
1) Tracking tools like nutrition and fitness tracker
2) Expert articles and videos from our team
3) A supportive community made up of people motivating each other
4) SparkPoints gamification as a way to make it fun to reach one small goal at a time.

For the first time ever with this community feed, we are integrating all 4 types of features into one main feature! We call this integration of goals into a community feed “socially-enabled goal tracking.” We think this will make the SparkPeople feed unlike any other type of feed and will make it valuable for our members to participate in this feed even if you already use other social feeds like Facebook. We will continue building out this feature including adding goal reports for goals posted to the feed plus several other ideas.

The Community Goal Feed can become a central place for all of us to “hang out” for this type of accountability to each other and to both motivate other people and be motivated by others – and have fun together. I plan to post to the feed several times per day as a way to keep me motivated and accountable to reach my goals. You can think of posting and commenting to the feed as a simple challenge that could change your life!

We hope to build a community spirit where we comment on each other’s posts for support and motivation. We’ve always seen in our community that even the smallest comments can make a big impact on someone. You don’t have to be an expert to motivate someone else. Every person has an ability to motivate other people. Even “liking” posts is a great way to show your support to other members. Once you start doing this, you might find that it’s addictive to spark other people to reach their goals by being a Healthy Leader and this positivity will translate to your own life.

If you are interested in updates on the feed, just follow my blog and I’ll send out periodic announcements.

We want to make this the most motivational and useful tools around for reaching goals in a fun environment.

Thanks for reading and I hope to see you posting to the SparkPeople Community Goal Feed!

Here is a quick screenshot showing how the feed will look:

Here is a notice from Coach Jen about a new change that will appear on our home pages. You will have to copy & paste the link to go to the preview page.

Hi everyone!

I wanted to give you a heads up about a new feature we'll be launching in the next day or two. We're very excited to introduce our Community Goal Feed, a place to post updates and photos, share your goal progress and tell others a little more about yourself! This feed will be found on your Start page (on the full site) or homescreen (through the app). Here's a link to what the Start page will look like:

view_mar2017.pdf

We think this feed will make it even easier for people to share and get the support they need to reach all of their healthy living goals. We're hoping you all can play a key role in being active in the feed, both by your own posting and commenting/liking others posts. know you'll likely have some questions about how it's all going to work, but we'll be posting a blog about all of the details as soon as the feature launches. We just wanted you to be aware that it's coming.

Thanks so much for your support!

Coach Jen

Just wondering if anyone else here is doing a 40 Days 40 Items challenge for Lent? I am not Catholic & have never done the giving up something for lent thing, but when I heard about this I decided to do it. You put one item a day to get rid of in a bag & at the end of 40 days, drop it off wherever it goes. I have a bag for shoes to go to the Shoeman, a bag for items to go to Goodwill & a bag for items to go to the dumpster. Every little bit helps.

Here is a link for information about the Shoeman Project just in case you have shoes to get rid of.

I knew I had an infection, but the dentist hadn't been able to get it under control so I just let the endodones handle it. She said the infection was such that the dentist wouldn't be able to deal with it. The endonontist ended up lancing a mass in my cheek, cleaning the puss out of the tooth and packing the tooth with antibiotics that drain slowly into my body. I go back in 2 weeks for her to clean the antibiotics out and put the normal filling in the roots.

What got me, is like always I told her that I was very sensitive to narcotics and OD easy. This normally gets me a child's dose, which works fine. She told me that they have found that 2 ibuprofen and a Tylenol taken at once works good for people that can't take narcotics. And i was to take them every 6 hours. She gave a prescription for Tylenol with a small dose of narcotics, but said she didn't think I would need to fill it.

I think Genealogy in in my genes. So many of mom's cousins have taken the DNA test and I have gotten to know my cousins on my Dad's side when we discovered we were building the same tree. Our common Great grandmother had done a family tree and then destroyed it. We where trying to one rebuild the tree and two see if there was a copy somewhere of the old tree she hadn't destroyed.

It's really pretty exciting that so many cousins have taken the DNA test and that your mother can remember the stories from their childhoods. Just a thought (take it or leave it): write down (ok, key into the computer) all the stories you can get. They reflect a time of life that is probably long gone. Your children may not appreciate them now; that seems to come with age. If we don't get the stories when our parents are alive they (the stories) will be lost forever. If you can print them out (passwords disappear too) then they can be saved until they will be appreciated. Many of us wish we had stories such as yours and can never get them; you will be giving a great gift to future generations.

I've never really known what to do with my DNA matches, except call mom when it is one of her cousins and listen to all the stories about what they did growing up. Dad had little or no use for family, I saw my cousins maybe once. Mom grew up with her cousins, but after she married Daddy, never heard from them again, so me finding out about them, who they married, what they did for a living, how many children they had, is very exciting to her.

I appreciate the offer of help. I do not know what mirror trees are. However, I now have both sides of my genetic heritage. I am creating my trees on mother's side but letting my sister follow up on our father's side since she already has a major head start on that process. I am accumulating DNA matches from Ancestry but don't have a lot of time to work on it right now. I have some thoughts about how to take that information and work backward on it but will have to wait awhile to put it into practice. However, if someone already has a system for that process I'd be interested in hearing about it. I have been in contact with one DNA connection that matches up at about the 3rd or 4th cousin level. She lives about 900 miles from here but somehow that doesn't seem too far. We will start out with what we each have and see where it leads us.

Tired, but it is a good tired. I've been CLEANING. I'm determined to have the living room & hopefully, the bedroom cleaned completely before the new windows are installed. The fun part, is I don't know exactly when that will be. He is going to do it when the weather permits & he has a free day so I will have one day notice. The furniture in the living room is moved around & the wood floor is clean & shiny on one side of the room. Going to try to finish the other side of the room tomorrow, but I don't have the energy I used to have so it may take two more days. At least right now he can move the sofa & end tables from in front og the windows without getting attacked by dust bunnies.

Sandy- We are leaving on Friday, hopefully, to go to Ft. Worth from Minnesota. The weather looks like it will be icy in Kansas City area and Oklahoma so we will have to really watch the weather. I have Kansas City on a favorite on my weather. I get the Weather Channel and can set favorite places.

Thanks for the info.

Need to get packed. I will be back next week and will get back into Spark.

I took the Ancestry DNA test - caught it when they had one of their $20 off specials. I was adopted and had no info on my biological father. The first connection who popped up turned out to be my half sister and she has already done a lot of work on dad's family tree. So I found a whole slew of relatives. On the other hand, nobody close on my mother's side has turned up at all. It just depends on who else has already taken the test.

Know nothing about Family Tree maker....I love the FamilySearch.org because it is free.

Gal on FindAGrave I had been talking with sent me a link for Rachel Steely Yandell who had moved with a group to Oklahoma...but the Steely who stayed in Missouri didn't know where.

It was amazing to follow up and make connections...There was a picture of Rachel....and a man named after her brother, my Grandfather that we didn't know about!

And...I have sent and received a private email from a relative who may have more pictures.

Wow....oh, now back to real life. emoticon

I'm using family tree maker, or was. I never quite figured out the last up date and they have already told me that the next update won't work on my old PC. I use a mac most of the time now and family tree maker use to cost twice as much. I heard they are making them the same so will have to check it out.

I pulled out some papers yesterday and my daughter told her husband to study the page as it will be a test. This is on Titian Vecellio. We descend from his brother's line. He did not take a test. emoticon

Anyone using Family Tree Maker? I know they were changing but have not taken the time to check on it. emoticon

It has been so cold here with the below zero weather. Today it is snowing and watching the traffic now in Minneapolis/St. Paul is a nightmare. Glad I stayed home.

Take care.

The noisy fireworks started here about 6:00 p.m. and went until about 12:30. We are "in town" but in a small farming community so things are pretty open here too. We watched the Lincoln Center Concert and then the presentation of the Mark Twain Award to Carol Burnett which went until 12:30. It certainly made for a really pleasant evening and a great way to start the new year. Hope everyone else has a good year as well.

Happy New Year

The fire works started at 5P last night 1/4 a mile from our house and went on till 12:15. The early ones were just the noise makers, but I did go out on the porch at midnight and watched the pretty ones. I think there was a contest between one 1/4 mile to the left, one 3/4 mile in front and one 1/4 mile behind us. Made quite a light show. Mutt didn't get his evening walk, he hates firecrackers, and was ready to go at 5 this morning. We have a lot more freedom in the country, but then so does everyone else.

Sandy, I'm sure no one worried about your hair except you. After all, anyone out at the store was dealing with that same wind. And most of us are so self-absorbed we don't notice those around us very much, except to try to avoid walking into them. And when all else, fails, it is good for all of us to learn to laugh at ourselves. Life is too short to sweat such trivialities. Best wishes for the new year.

I'm sure glad that today is ending th old year & not starting the new year. I went to Walmart to pick up a few things & to pick up two online orders. Just before I got out of the car, I discovered that I had lost my list somewhere. OK, I'd just have to do my best to remember what was on it. Then the rubber band that was holding my hair back broke & I only had one clip with me. I put what I could into the clip & the rest had to just stay loose. Except that the wind was blowing - hard - from my back. Could I really go into Walmart like this? Than I thought of some of the people I'd seem in there & in I went. There frozen chicken breasts were $3.00 higher than Aldis which was on the other side of the plaza. Did I really want to go into Aldis looking like this? No, but I also didn't want to have to make another trip for the chicken. I ran in, got my chicken & got in the checkout landm hoping I wouldn't see anyone I know. God smiled on me & I didn't see anyone I knew. Or maybe He was laughing at me?

Last night I found the grave and much information on 3 GreatsGrandfather's older sister. She had stayed back in Tenn when part of the family came to SW Missouri in 1850.
Seems she had a large family and lived until 1916. Nice to find!

to ASOBFALLS in particular ... although most of us have felt the addiction while staring at FindAGrave or Family Search and many other places. I understand where you are coming from. Just now I am searching in an area of Scotland for my father's ancestors and everthing (for me) is new, not old.

Hope everyone had a good holiday and are ready to start the new year off with a bang, and I don't mean those noisy things they are shooting off around here that scare the you know what out of the dogs. So they need to go for a walk, but then they can not only hear the noise makes but see them.

I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
When wild and sweet,
Their words repeat,
Of peace on earth, good will to men!

My understanding is that the LDS has made armament to share with ancestry. I'm not quite sure what you are asking, but I don't think you can use Ancestry, You just have access to their records. In other words when you are researching someone records from Ancestry will come up, but you won't save them on ancestry and things like Ancestry hints won't come up. I haven't gotten on family search lately so I can't be sure, but that is my understanding.

Today I upgraded for 6 months of Ancestry Worldwide. I hope I can find what I am looking for in England and France on my birth mother's grandmother's side, in England on my birth mother's paternal side, in Ireland on my adopted mother's side and in Germany/Austria on my adopted father's side. Lots to do next 6 months.

Hello MaryAnn sounds like a good plan....
Do my entries on Family Search go to Ancestory?? Family Search is the FREE sibling of Ancestry also run by LDS. Anyway, I am getting my stuff up there in the cloud.

Still working a 40 hour week and struggling to find computer time.

Hello everyone ! I have been a member off and on
for quite awhile. I tend to overcommit and get behind.

I love find-a-grave and took picture for several years.
Mobility issues have kept me off doing it for a couple
of years now.

My goal for 2017 is to finally get my research online at
Ancestry. It is my life's work and I want it posted before
I die. I bought a small printer/scanner and paid for 6mo
of the super-dupper ancestry and hope to do a lot of
research this year.

I have not been on for ages. I had heart surgery in June and just stopped Spark. Back again and hope to get more involved.

I am still working on my genealogy but need to get serious again.

If I do not get on again for a bit, have a Merry and Blessed Christmas or if another religion best to you.

ASOBFALLS,

I live near a small graveyard and was thinking about it the other day. No family of mine there.

Is your name Joyce?

..I've just discovered a fun thing!

I am working two sites: Find A Grave and Family Search.org
2 months ago visited a small rural cemetery where Uncle Floyd is buried...got picture of his headstone and then snapped about 10 random headstones just ?? because

So yesterday made a Memorial for Uncle Floyd and then checked out the other photos and 8 of them were useable...as in no Memorials or memorial with no photo.
Then I found a feature on Find A Grave where there are photo requests and more than a dozen requests are for the small cemetery in my town....So next warm weather I'll be walking the cemetery with my camera for my exercise!
