In summer in MN we live on an island and have never had drop in visitors.

In winter we live in an active adult gated community. It is not likely that a stranger would get inside the gate.

But if someone comes, I look our a window near the door to identify the person, then open it slightly to talk to him/her.

The last time was in May, almost bedtime for me with DH sleeping - I opened the door just enough to talk though it - It was a unknown man with a dog, who identified himself that he was a neighbor walking his dog and noticed we had left our garage door open ...It was so simple and necessary and I was so grateful...still did not meet him after.

Personal goal is to weigh in 159 by the end of May 2019. I did not make my previous goal so must do better...I ACHIEVED THE GOAL OF REACHING 151 IN MAY 2013. A LOSS OF 37 POUNDS! Summer of 2014 I gained 10 pounds of it back while traveling to the BVI's and Ireland so I have set a new goal for 2019 to be back to below 155.

I live in the country on a private drive. If someone knocks at the door, my dogs go bonkers. heaven help the fool who drives up while my dogs are outside.
If I'm not expecting anyone and I look to see who it is, I'll answer the door if I know who it is, like my neighbors. (they're great). If it's a stranger I'll answer only if I feel like it or if I'm not in my pj's.

I live in the country up a long dirt/stone lane. I've never ever had a trick-or-treater and I built this house 31 years ago. Usually I hear when a car comes up the lane. If I know the person I invite them in to visit. emoticon

If it's a close friend I will invite them in unless it is too late. Someone who isn't close I will talk outside. I have a peep hole, so I try to see who it is before opening the door. Don't open it for sales people.

I don't visit anyone without calling first. I expect the same courtesy.

If it is someone I know I will invite them in. If it is a stranger I will stand at the door talkng to them or step out onto the porch.

We live on a flag lot in a semi-rural farming community. Very few people ever come back here. Even trick-or-treaters don't come here if we have the light on for Halloween. I usually look out the glass in the door to see who it is. For sales people I just talk through the glass storm door. If I want to pursue a conversation I step outside. About 95% of the time my husband is here with me so I will sometimes chat. If I lived alone I probably would not even do that.

I live on a dead end country road, so few people come out here. I look out and see who it is then decided. It is normally someone trying to sell meat to a vegetarian, then I have to go out because they will beat on the door for 10 minutes, or a missionary then it depends on how I'm feeling and weather it is Mormon or Jehovah Witness. Jehovah Witness don't know the Bible and are boring to talk to. At least Mormons know the Bible and we can have an intelligent conversation.

As for friends or family, DD is the only family near by and she will as if I'm working before coming out here and friends want to met me some place closer to town.

I agree; it depends. When I'm upstairs, I never know if someone comes.

It really depends on a lot of different things. Since I live alone it depends on the time, if I know the person or persons & who they are. If I am at the back of the apartment where the computer is, I probably won't hear them in the first place.

What do you do when someone drops by unexpectedly? Do you graciously invite them in? Do you step outside to talk to them? Do you pretend that you are not at home?
