My body type seems to do best when I follow a lower carb program and diet. I've had a hard time staying on track with my usual meal replacements program - and looked into Atkins once again after many years. I have to say they have a wonderful and informational updated site since I last visited there years ago. The plan for me seems much more accomodating than when I tried the induction phase15-20 years ago.

Needless to say, I started Induction last Friday August 12th and have lost each day since. I'm on Day #5 today with a loss of 4.5 lbs. I'm aiming for 6 lbs. this week, and another 2 lb. by the end of my induction phase which should bring bring me to about 12 lbs. to work on toward goal. My body is responding well, no side effects, and my carb cravings were gone within the 1st day.

Also adding in cardio workouts and strength training at a very moderate level this time around to help with toning as I lose. It's one thing to lose quickly, but another to look good when you reach goal, so exercise for me is crucial.

Loving my food options and glad to stay I'm much more mature about my meal plans this time around. I recognize cheese is not always my friend, ha! Watching portions and really being cautious about if I'm hungry or simply wanting to eat something. Looking for success and some new motivation with this SP team! On Day #5 and doing well.

I hate the idea of summer ending, I hate everything about winter, I hate the cold, the snow the dark nights. yuck. I like christmas and new years that's about it.

This week is testing me, I had a BBQ the other night, a birthday dinner tomorrow night, and another birthday on saturday. I won't be eating on plan either night, Tomorrow were having pizza and cake, On Saturday more cake and alot of other foods and alcohol. Than Sunday I start my Fat flush cleanse for 14 days. I have planned on eating off plan for the Saturday since I've known about it, it's my friend 50 Bday.

Now that school has started and I have to start waking up at 5:30, I may have to change my challenge for August to "get enough sleep" and let the additional steps do what they may.

Starting tonight, I plan to not sit down to the tv unless there is something I really want to watch on. I get sucked in so easily then end up going to bed later than I planned. I really want to get to the point where I used to be which was I watched tv if I wanted to see something specific, I did not just sit in front of it hoping something is on.

So after I finish the dinner dishes I am going to wash up and dress for bed. Then I will work on some other activity until I am tired. Given my hubby's snoring had me up since 3:30 this morning, I suspect I will be tired pretty early.

So my August goals are still to
1.laugh daily....so far so good
2.work on getting my lc plan in place to help me reach my 5 pounds loss a month goal...I have been staying within my limits, the loss is not coming yet
3.get enough sleep, would like to be able to wake up without an alarm....start on this tonight

I hope you'll have a great celebration, Maw! I love middle eastern food in general, I hope you'll find lots of kebabs and salads to try!

Sometimes I want to toss the scale out the window, Betty - I know yours will straighten up very soon! You've been doing a great job, it sucks that it doesn't always show up right away...

Had to get a filling today - booooo - I swear both the dentist and his assistant were playing a game to see just how many fingers AND instruments they could fit in my mouth at once! I ended up with quite a headache!

Wasn't quite sure what to do with myself afterwards - I usually go straight for a Wendy's frosty after the dentist! but I was good and just came home and made cheesy eggs instead......LC comfort food!

Well, I've been doing alright as far as the numbers on the food diary goes, but since the scale had an attitude, I was kind of bummed this morning. I'm going to mix things up just a little, tho still staying on my August goals for the month. Today wasn't all that good, but tomorrow is looking better (disposition and all)...

I'm going to my Muslim friend's house for dinner tonight. It will be the big dinner to break the day's Ramadan fast. I don't know what she'll serve. I'll do my best to eat low carb while still being polite. Fortunately she knows I'm diabetic and am restricted in what I can eat. But her parents are also diabetic and I'm sure they eat a lot of things I don't. She eats what seems to me to be a strict version of halal (basically the Islamic version of kosher) and I know that they ask lots of questions when they eat out to make sure that the food is ok for them, so she must be used to the idea that sometimes people can't eat things they might otherwise like to.

I'm looking forward to it, though with a bit of trepidation.

When I set out the terms of my August challenge, I gave myself an exception from the carb and calorie counting for this dinner. I'll still eat low carb, but will not worry about staying within my normal limits.

I think all the midmonth check-ins are looking really great! We're all still here in Sparkland togther and that's big all on it's own!!

As Maw and I have said before - we call them Challenges - not "Easys"...but sometimes you just gotta cut yourself a break!

I try really hard to set goals that are challenging AND realistic, but, I really think Leslie has the right idea - a goal adjustment might help some of us fight that "failure" mode that can be easy to slip into.

Remember this is for YOU, no one is going to punish you or chide you...we are all about boosting each other up around here!

August goals

No More than 40 net carbs a day. 60 normal carbs
Walk/hike 35 KM a week.
Do the sparks assigned strength training 6 days a week.
Track everything.

Over all I've done good, only had two days where I've gone over in my carbs.
I walk 35K the first week only got 15k the second week.
change my strength training to 3 days a week but full body.
I've tracked everyday.

Beth- I'm doing Fat Flush the point of the cranberry juice is to get rid of water weight. It helps detox the liver.

I have delayed my fat flush cleanse because I have 2 birthday and 2 BBQ this week. Still sticking to low carb, but not the cleanse I will be starting it on Sunday.

Alright, I'm back for my challenge update

Goals:
drink 8-10 glasses of water- I've been drinking between 9-10
keeping within my carb goal of 25- I've been in range everyday! Yay
Workout 3-4 times a week- last week I only did 2 days of workouts, but this week I'm definitely going to do 4! I started today with 30 min on my stationary bike!
packing my lunch everyday- I haven't missed a day yet!
tracking my food on the weekends- UGH I missed this one completely. I always count my carbs and I keep a running tally throughout the day but with weekends being so busy I didn't track it into SP, I really need to work on this!

Here's what I said I'm going to do in August -
Average about 1800 calories per day - definitely went over the second week of the month, and I'm sure I went over while I was gone. But I'll get back to it for the rest of the month.
No more than 25 net carbs per day (NOT an average!) - kept to this while I was here, probably went over while I was gone, but gave myself an exception for the trip
No more than 20 grams of nuts per day (not an average!) - ditto with the nuts
About 10 grams of fiber per day, but not if it interferes with the first three (this is an "I'd like to" not an "I will")
Exercise at least 3 times per week - kinda sorta, but not really
Track all of my food, except for the exceptions below - done
And laugh every day! (Great goal, something I tend to forget about) - I think so
Most important, of course, is checking in here every day, except when a computer isn't available (like when I'm travelling) - done - even when I really really really didn't want to!

Thanks for the update nudge, Rhonda. :) I can, for ONCE, happily say that I've pretty much stuck to my goals!!

Beth's August Goals:
40 - 50 carbs per day, less if I can do it! - yes
weigh in daily - yes (and it really does help me be in the right mind set for the day!)
post every morsel of food in my tracker - started out like gangbusters, sort of fallen off of food tracking, but I do track all of my exercises religiously!)
Water, water, water - pretty good...a few days I didn't get my full intake
work out/exercise in some form at least 5 x week (focus on arms and legs!) - YES!!!! Need to incorporate more arm exercises, but definitely see a difference in my legs - less wobbly!!
more veggies! - needs more work!
laugh daily!!!!! - YES!!!

Beth

Tracking is key for me too. If I follow through on tracking everything I eat (good and bad), I find that I am much more successful at sticking to my eating plan! Then I get a little lazy, TOM arrives, and before I know it I've had something/s that I shouldn't have had. Not only does it sabotage the diet, but my tummy hurts and heartburn acts up with each high carb slip-up.

I had been really good at sticking with my goals until this weekend. TOM caught me off guard so I let my sweet tooth get the best of me. I am armed and ready for a better day/week. I'd like to change that darn ticker this Sunday!! :-)

Have a great week everyone!

Well, I have come back with some gentle prodding. I don't actually like doing the challenges, not sure why I jump into them when I do. It seems to go against what I am trying to accomplish-making this the way I eat as opposed to a diet. So after a couple of days of trying to do the challenge I start to think like dieter, and "cheating" enters my head, and I start to go off plan. Weird. Anyway, my goals....
"-I like the laugh daily one. I am going to seriously work on this one. I just bookmarked this link...jokes2go.com/
-Continue to hone in on the details of my LC plan to get it to work for me.
-Move, move, move. My pedometer showed a dismal 5,000 steps a day average for July. I will get that average to at least 6,000 a day for August."

I have been doing a very good job with the daily laugh, not sure if I am laughing more or noticing it more.

doing very well with my LC plan, find that tracking is essential. I do better with my weight when I am tracking and can figure out why I am not losing when I track, so I am tracking like it or not (and I don't).

I am moving more, doing more, but lots of it does not show up as steps on the pedometer (ie. gardening).

So glad you had a good trip, Maw! You showed such restraint in the Jelly Belly factory! I'm not sure I'd be able to do it - the buttered popcorn beans are my nemesis!

I can't wait til I quit working on Sept 24 so I can join you in the decluttering, Betty! my 'junk drawer' has expanded to 6 drawers! LOL - I certainly don't want to move with all that mess!

Since we're already to the middle of August, here's my goal check in:

Keep eating Primal with less than 40 carbs per day.......so far so good!

Complete the Couch to 5k program.....started getting a strange pain in my leg after running (maybe bad shoes?) so I decided to set this one aside for now, walking every night instead.

Work on the 100 push up challenge.....I'm up to 50, right on track to meet this by the end of the month!

Check in here every day!......still trying!!

Hope everyone is doing great with their goals!!

I'm baaaaaaaaaaack!

Had a good trip. Good visit with SIL and nieces (who really didn't fight as much as one might expect - as I expect - 8 year old and 11 year old sisters to fight). Did some fun stuff, had time to just sit and chat with SIL. My "treat" was a single Very Cherry Chocolate Dipped Jelly Belly at the Jelly Belly tour! Was it ever good! Tasted just like a chocolate covered cherry, but much smaller. Oh, and the guy gave me one of something red when he gave me the chocolate jelly belly, and I ate it, too. I almost got some SF jelly bellies, but then I saw the warning (in big letters) that eating too many of them can cause severe stomach pains and/or a laxative effect. I'd forgotten all about that! Decided they really weren't worth it. Ate too much, and definitely too many nuts in the car there and back, but I'm satisfied with how I did.

Back to the real world now. Guess I'd better find out what I committed to for this month!

Sounds like you're all doing well. I could sure use a major declutterer around here!

Where were you when I needed you Kris?? LOL! I'm about uncluttered in a couple of rooms at least now...

Beth, if you knew how long this stuff has been sitting around, you probably wouldn't want my help. Something I've been going to do for a couple of years at least!!

But it's very pleasant to sit in my livng room and look around now!! At least I can look around without thinking I should "do something"... and me being the lazy sort, works fine for me.

Turned out really nice here, I'm going to fix some dinner and watch the last episode of Next Network Food Star... (well, in a few hours).

Betty: Wow, wanna come over and tackel my clutter when you're done??? That coffee sounds yummy...gonna go make one right now for myself! :)

I've been working on the buffet/hutch in my dining room today, but am done for the day. I do need to clean the table (it's glass) and there is a bookcase in there that is overweight with books (might I add, mostly cookbooks) I need to weed those out as well and get rid of the majority of them. But that's going to be another day.

It's a gorgeous day here today and I think I'm going to take some coffee and go sit outside for awhile.

Crystal: Yummmmmm on the dinner. What is OMM (I know what a MIM is but can't keep up with all the abbreviations!) Love the avocado with your eggs - I need to do that again! I'm out of bacon, and am trying to make myself take a break on it. I was eating it every single day!!! Probably not such a good thing for me...

Kris: Yay!!! Keep on trackin'!!! :)

Thanks for your encouragement, Beth...and way to go on the strength training. This evening after having dinner with some LC friends (we had breakfast foods for dinner: bacon, eggs, OMM, avocados, etc.), I didn't want to work out. But I just made myself do the minimum. So glad I did. Every little bit helps!

Rhonda: Wow! Those dives sound amazing! I think I'd freak out seeing some of that ocean life. Should have seen me when we were snorkeling in the Caribbean and a pirana kept circling us! Eeek! Sounds like a great workout, though!

Crystal: You are so good! Always on goal/task here! You inspire me to keep it up. :)

LivingLife: Sounds like things are going well with your fat fast. Just curious, why does it include cranberry juice? Does that halp flush out?

Betty: Oh! I so need to do some decluttering! Good for you for taking it to Goodwill ASAP too!
.
Just finished my daily exercises...pushups, squats, and calf raises. Need to incorporate some more arm exercises in there...maybe some free weights.

Good for you, Betty - it's nice to declutter!

Thanks, Colleen - I'll try that...I'm not good at taking oil from a spoon like some folks can!

2 really great dives done this morning......the dive camera drowned so of course we saw a plethora of sealife today - 4 giant turtles, mantis shrimp and a 6 ft white tip shark on dive one....a very bold octopus, nudibranch and 3 more sea turtles on dive two! awesome! (it always seems to go that way when I can't or don't take the camera)

Got a LOT of exercise on that first one too....there was a really strong current to swim thru on the way back in - I had to grab onto the rocks to rest and catch my breath a couple of times! whew!

I've eaten well today, a few more carbs than I would have liked, but have had fruit twice today, so thats where it comes from. But it's okay. About 1250 calories...

Been busy all day, got rid of about 4 large grocery type sacks of knick knacks and hurried and took them to Goodwill before I could change my mind and start picking through to keep something or another! Cleaned out a couple of drawers as well - it's been a busy day and I'm ready to go to the recliner and call it a day.

Another day at work, Today is my first day of my cleanse, so far so good, it's pretty similar to how I was eating before besides I have to drink 8oz of pure cranberry juice diluted in 64 oz of water. I do a shake for breakfast or 2 eggs and veggies, 4oz of protein and unlimited veggies for lunch and dinner and two pieces of fruit for snacks. Plus 2 tbsp of flax oil a day. it's around 1200-1300 calories 40-60g Carbs 60-80g Protein 40-50g Fat. So not to bad.

Rhonda: So, did you guys ever get your dive in yesterday? Hope your fat fast does the trick for you.

Bearclaw: That is great about your bike ride! Kudos to you!

Crystal: You were better than I was yesterday...I never did get in any exercise at all! I wish I would have logged in and gotten some of your motivating vibes to get me moving! :)

Renee: Good to see you here! :)

Everyone is doing so well!! I don't feel too bad about missing yesterday as I've been very consistent day to day on my exercise, so I will just count it as a day off. LOL!

Had a job interview yesterday - it went very well, I think! Fingers crossed!!

weird, a bunch of posts appeared under my earlier one - I'd been thinking I was all alone in here today!

Leslie - I'm glad to see you! I hope things will get more 'normal' for you soon!

Crystal - glad you got your fitness minutes in!!

Bearclaw - congrats on that major ride! very impressive!!

Colleen - I hope this will be a good boost for all the hard work you've been doing!

Having very good results with my "modified Fat Fast" - I'm keeping calories below 1200 and boosting fat to 80-90%.....I feel really great, energetic and not hungry! It seems to be showing up on the scale already, but since I sort of bounce around a lot, I'll wait til my official weigh in next week to decide!

crazy saturday so far....got up to go dive, realized DH didn't have his ID to get on the Navy Base where we planned to dive....drove back home to look for it......wasn't there, must be on his desk.....decided to grab the grocery list and bags if we were going to the AFBase anyway.....((note: the Navy and Air Force bases are at completely opposite ends of the 30 mile long island - we live kind of in the middle)......got the shopping done.....now going to make lunch and then we'll try to go dive again.....sigh!

Hope everyone is having a better day than me! LOL

*update - got all the way back out to the dive site, got all our gear on - realized Rhonda forgot her mask! argh! we decided we just weren't meant to dive today!

got chores done instead and now I'm making White Castle Pie for dinner! have you guys got big weekend plans??

I've decided to do Ann Louise Gittleman Fat flush program to try to get rid of some water weight that seems to not want to leave. Luckily Fat Flush and protein power go well together they actually talk about each others programs in there books. I start tomorrow.

OK. I did my 30+ mile bike ride yesterday (a goal for this month) and found it fun. I think I found Boston's equivalent to a bicycle highway. I took a couple of people's advice and drank some chocolate milk afterwards (two cups) as a recovery drink. While the milk definitely perked me up quickly, my goodness that thing was a carb bomb. I think the next time I will do HALF a chocolate milk mix my own.

Good luck, everyone.
